Proposal submission for site specific project
Name of Applicant: Jayden McChesney
Post Code: G69 6HJ
1. Project Summary
Please summarise in approximately 30 words the project for which you are seeking funding:
The project is an engraved metal piece that will be on the back of an advertisement board. The piece will promote tourist attractions around Glasgow to viewers coming off of the trains in Central Station.
Project start date:  20 January 2022
Expected completion date: 10 May 2022
Expected Budget:   £1,500 max.
2. About Your Project
Describe in detail the project for which you are seeking support in around 400 words. Please be clear and concise and remember that the Panel may not be familiar with your work.
Please include the following:
A description of your project and the thinking behind it
An explanation of how it will benefit your creative development
Will your project have any outcomes (i.e. exhibition or trade fair, if so are these confirmed or potential)
An outline of any key stages in your project/ timeline.
My Project
This project will be an engraved wooden piece that will be attached to an advertisement board in Glasgow Central Station. This piece will be designed to promote tourism in and around Glasgow. Located at the departure boards, this piece will be eye-catching and will draw in more viewers. Due to the fact that this piece will be next to the departure boards, it will be seen by around 5 million people during a yearly period.
As stated, this piece will be cut onto wood via laser cutting as it will be a much easier method. I had originally intended to use metal instead of wood but decided that using wood would be better in the long run – it would be easier to create and install whereas metal would take longer to cut and would be more expensive. Using wood means I would be able to make small alterations if those were needed, if metal was used then I would not be able to make said alterations as it would be a lot harder and incredibly time consuming.
The idea for this piece has yet to be fully finalized although I have a rough understanding of where I want it to go. My idea is to have digitally drawn fine line outlines of multiple tourist spots found in Glasgow such as The Gallery of Modern Art, the Duke of Wellington statue and the Clyde Arc Bridge. Digitally drawn images will be the best method as it will be easier to laser print further on in the process. In doing this, I will be able to showcase my installation to its fullest potential as well as increasing public interest in said tourist attractions.
Research was a very imperative task for this project as I had to research tourist locations in Glasgow as well as finding out the cost of the materials needed. Both of these really developed my knowledge for this project, making sure I had an understanding of the popular attractions and the expenses that I would have to cover.
Installing this piece would be a mammoth task. I would hire professionals in order to get the piece installed efficiently and safely, making sure everyone is supplied with the correct equipment and following correct safety procedures. The installation process would roughly take around 3-4 days, making sure I have a designated day for the setup, the installation itself and a day for taking the setup down – potentially an extra one for any issues or queries.
Key Stages
Researching the materials, cost and installment methods.
Further development to perfect design.
Creating the final piece by laser cutter.
Installing the piece into the site location over 4 days.
3.  Supporting Information
Please submit a copy of your current CV:
Identify key members of the project that you will need to be in regular contact with such as: Site /Project Manager, Project Sponsor/ Stakeholders, Public Arts Officer etc
Evidence research into public liability insurance, health and safety concerns, timescales,
Provide 6 images in jpeg form of current work in support of your application
All supporting information located on tumblr.
4. Written evaluation ( approx. 500 words).
This project proved to be a very impressive one but immensely stressful, making sure I had the final piece perfected whilst also having the knowledge and research to back it up.
In order to complete my project, I faced numerous setbacks. A handful of these were issues such as time-keeping and overall stress whereas others were technical things such as issues with the laser cutting process. My time-keeping played an essential role in this project, whether it was good or bad. I found that my time management wasn’t up to standard and could have been better - I will continue to work on this for all forthcoming projects. Due to the fact that my time management was not the best, this caused me to become very stressed and on edge – this heavily contributed to the final project.
Technical issues were also stepping stones, after working with the laser cutting on a trial-and-error basis whilst trying to figure out the right depth, I was able to perfect my work. In order to even begin, the quality of wood was something I had to think about and select which also took a reasonable amount of time. Even though these issues proved to be challenging, I managed to overcome them and create a beautiful final piece.
Researching tourism was detrimental to this project. In order to produce a final piece, I had to choose multiple tourist attractions in Glasgow and display those in my work. Finding inspiration for the outline was something I struggled to come across but I did find the ‘Laser Engraved Detail’ company that is owned and ran by Christopher and Tesla Corkill. Their work heavily influenced my thoughts for this piece.
Applying for funding was something I had to consider, after searching for suitable funding opportunities, I managed to find the best one for me. The funding I applied for was the ‘Open Fund for Individuals’ by Creative Scotland – this was the most useful option seeing as it was based in Scotland unlike many others and had very few specific entry requirements. There is also no deadline for this funding which is incredibly convenient to me and other artists alike.
Working with the laser cutter proved difficult but after a few attempts, it came out exactly the way I had hoped – potentially even better than I had imagined. The final piece is a miiniture model of the proposed project. The final proposal covers the required bases of the simulated project. Using research to discover information I had previously not known about art installation. The site specific artwork relates well to the location proposed and I am content with the final proposal.

Artist Research
My main influence for this piece was the ‘Laser Engraved Detail Company’ who produce laser cut pieces on many different materials.
This company prides itself on being an employee-owned company seeing as the two owners were and still are employees here, they are Christopher and Tesla Corkill who met 12 years ago and discovered their shared passions for “making stuff.” The two bonded over their creative minds and decided to open up a business together with their background experience in accounting and retail – their location is in Boise, Idaho.
Their materials list is very impressive as it has over 15 different materials listed for you to choose from. These include; acrylic, cork, fabric, glass, marble and coated metal. They use a CO2 laser cutting machine to provide this service to customers as well as self-producing some work. They promote laser engraving as it is very cost effective and more environmentally friendly in comparison to other methods of production.
Their main inspiration is really each other, the pair work very closely together and draw each original idea out of that. They also do custom made pieces for customers who would like something they bring engraved on an item – whether that’s a wooden frame or a dog collar.
Chris and Tesla’s portfolio can be found on their website (linked below) and this really helped me to form a final idea for this piece.

Liability Insurance

Quote - "£65 and upwards per year"
Choosing not to have liability insurance can land you with a fine or a jail sentence.
Having insurance means that if any visitor, client or third party person obtains an injury due to your activities, you will be able to provide compensation.
Having the right insurance will also make you look more professional and will give everyone peace of mind.

Material research
Investigation on the best materials and cost effectiveness.
Tumblr media
Possible pricing for the main metal sheet. Four pieces will be welded together to create one the size of the already up sign. They will be the same dimensions to create a neat look.
CHANGE: instead of metal as the material of choice I have decided to use wood instead. This is because the wooden engraving with create a more natural effect and will be lighter in weight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It will cost £600 for 4 American Cherry plywood sheets 2440 x 1220 x 4mm. These sheets will cut to the same dimensions as the sign and will need engraved on individually and then attach together with supporting wood, nails and glue on the back.
This link shows the cost of using an Lazer engraving machine. Roughly at £1 a minute of electricity is used while engraving. As the final piece will be big it will take a lot of time and use a lot of electricity. The cost of engraving will be an estimated £300.
Tumblr media
This varnish will be used to created a transparent protection for the sign from wear and tear. One can will cover the required 16 metres squared.
Tumblr media
Attachment by nuts and bolts. The final wooden sheet will have 75 evenly spread holes measuring the diameter of 12mm. These will support the piece onto the back of the sign at the site location.
Hiring scaffolding for the site installment for a week. Those scaffolding is best suit too use for installment.
