i think colette’s upbringing and being constantly near the ocean/bodies of water has shaped her enjoyment for the ocean and also herself as a person. between living near the sea in anistar, and going to alto mare along with hoenn, colette has had a lot of time around water. she couldn’t imagine herself living anywhere that’s totally landlocked, or being in a place where the ocean isnt easily accessible. she loves the sea, she loves the pokemon in it, and all the treasures and trinkets that can be found there, forgotten to all but the waves. the ocean is like a second home to her, water feeling like an extension of herself, in a way.

the idea of colette becoming a ranger has latched onto my entire fucking brain and wont let go :’)
she definitely doesnt want to be in a position of champion like her parents were, as she knows how that whole thing went for them. despite her intelligence and natural sense for battle, the other things that come with it (meetings, travel only for diplomatic reasons, etc) just isn’t for her at all. she is interested solely in the battle aspect, and that’s it. but her being a ranger? able to protect wild pokemon and the environment with the strength/bond of her team? helping trainers that are lost in the wilderness/helping injured people/pokemon? that seems so up her alley. she gets to travel and be out in nature which she thoroughly enjoys, and she can also dabble in tracking down some of the world’s strongest trainers to battle them (that way, she can come back home and maybe, hopefully, beat her parents in a battle too). IT JUST FITS.... i really wasnt sure what to do with her as far as her ambitions, and me being ‘stuck’ in regards to her plans was what was making her feel stuck too. but i think ive got it now and i just. 🥺

colette in her paldea travels staying as far away as humanly possible from the crater. she luckily doesnt have a flying pokemon so winding up in there by mistake that way is impossible, but serena has warned her upwards of a hundred times about it before she left and hearing the extent of serena’s injuries and her recovery makes her just like. yeah. there is nothing there for me that i need to worry about so i just wont even think about it-

Used to get into her mom’s clothes and makeup all the time as a kid. She’ll never forgot how hard her mom laughed seeing that she drew on her eyebrows with lipstick.

Colette grew up around her parents’ teams, and as a result, she isn’t really scared or intimidated by larger pokemon species. Her parents’ teams have fairly large pokemon on them, and not only that, their teams are extremely powerful. They all displayed a great level of care and caution towards her and Yvette both when they were young, something that Colette still finds endearing to this day. Like with her father’s Charizard or her mother’s Aegislash acting gentle towards the two girls, especially after seeing how fearsome both pokemon can be in a battle scenario.
It’s not to say Colette doesn’t respect the power or size of some pokemon. She certainly doesn’t poke the bear intentionally, still acting cautiously when around a larger or stronger species. For her, it’s just the intimidation factor that one might get when faced with such an opponent isn’t there.

When Colette was given permission to adopt Gaia and Arondight at age 13 after working with them for a few years prior to that, even, she was eager to introduce them to her home her parent’s teams, and to Morgana. The two were a bit shy given that they were both still young, but they fit into the household well enough.
Of course, Arondight wasn’t as willingly social as Gaia was, and he would quietly tag along with her for the most part. Not to talk with the others, really, but just to be part of the group. He felt a bit more at ease with the other dark-types and rescues, like Cerberus and Copycat, and he also found an acquaintanceship with Calista too.
One pokemon they both seemed to gravitate towards naturally was Joyeuse. Not because the Aegislash was a nurturing, motherly pokemon, but because of her strength and the way she carried herself. The two of them spent a bit of time watching her train, and it wasn’t long before they tried training with her. While Joyeuse would slice things with her blade, Gaia bit them in half, and Arondight would do his best with his own blades as well, despite them still healing a bit. He never pushed himself, and sometimes he did sit off to the side and would watch them instead.
Joyeuse took notice of this, of course. With these two pokemon being a package deal, she took them both in and decided to train them personally. She could see they both had the drive and ambition. Joyeuse knew her own limits, and her limits were quite high. She was mindful of the other two, though, given their past and how young they were. When they started appearing tired, but still pushed on, she would stop them so they didn’t strain themselves.
Gaia has always been more of a heavy attacker, while Arondight is quick on his feet. Joyeuse was able to adapt to both of their styles, and they trained with her up until Colette made the decision to set out on her journey. With Joyeuse’s help, they both became extremely formidable in combat. Gaia learned techniques to totally overpower and overwhelm her opponent, while Arondight learned to maximize his attacks and incorporate his fast movement into them.
The two of them are who Colette will use most often when double battles come up. Their teamwork is unparalleled given their history together, along with both of them knowing their fighting styles and able to provide sufficient cover for one another.
Gaia herself is extremely fearsome given her size now, and has become akin to Joyeuse among Kalos’ media outlets. Whenever the Garchomp is around, most reporters are too nervous to approach Colette. Arondight also acts similar to Joyeuse as well, in that camera flashes reflect glaringly off of his steel.
When Colette does return home, Gaia and Arondight will spar Joyeuse for fun, like old times. Joyeuse can still hold the two of them off like she used to, but she’s noticing that it’s getting more and more tough to hold her own each time she sees them again. She has gotten to see how the two of them have grown and improved, and she suspects it won’t be long before she has to relent and fight them one at a time instead.

The possibility of Colette losing a pokemon is something that was told to her dozens of times while in Trainer School, and it’s something Serena also spoke to her personally about as well. Things could happen, regardless of how careful one might be in that moment.
Of course she doesn’t like thinking about the idea, and she is careful about what situations and scenarios she involves her team with. She doesn’t want to go through such a tragedy. To experience that loss and that pain, to feel the bond and connection she forged with her pokemon just snapped...
At the same time, she knows she can’t keep a safety net around her team at all times either. She doesn’t want to be so protective that she hinders their growth any. It’s a balance between safety and risk-taking that Colette tries to keep.

Colette has always been more of an outdoors person, unsurprisingly. In her childhood, it was exceedingly rare to see her in the house beyond the normal times one would expect a child to be indoors. She spent hours upon hours outside in the backyard with her parent’s pokemon, running around the neighborhood and playing games with the other kids, swimming in the ocean when the water was warm enough, exploring the town once she was a bit older, etc.
She would be outdoors even beyond when the sun went down, playing and exploring until either Serena or Red sent one of their pokemon to go get her. Colette did come home for dinner when it was time, needing food after spending all afternoon outside, and it reenergized her enough to where she was right back outside the second she washed off her plate.
It’s no shock to anyone that this life of being outside and adventuring led into her becoming a trainer. She already displayed a natural affinity for survival from her parents, and a love for nature and all that lived in it. Not even rain or snow kept her from being outside, Colette taking the proper precautions and bundling up for acclimate weather to prevent herself from getting sick.
She took a similar approach to her mother when she went on her trek through Kalos, only staying within the walls of a Pokecenter when absolutely needed, which was only once or twice. Colette opt to set up camp instead, sleeping outdoors in the comfort of nature, cooking her own meals over a fire, and eating together with her team. She believes it helped her become more attuned to the world around her, and helped her grow closer to her team as well.
