HK charm badge making process

So I’m making charms out of polymer clay. Here’s the steps.

My pins are 2,5 cm long. To maintain that size, I first make a circle base. I find it easier to work on top of something solid, so I bake the base before starting to sculpt. (I bake them for 20-30 mins at 125 Celsius, which is 257 F)

I don’t have much to say about this next part, I just.. look at the reference and copy the shapes. It’s worth mentioning, maybe, that some details go on top of others, so I add them last? Or that if you get caught up in tiny details before you’ve established the general shape, you’re going to smush them in the process, so nuances go Very last. (I’m guilty of that myself)

I have this tool I’m using to help me sculpt. It’s just an (and I looked this word up 2 seconds ago) awl. I used to use a toothpick before I had it.

When I’m certain I’m done perfecting the charm, I bake it. It needs some time to cool, and then it’s ready for painting. I use acrylic paint.

Hollow knight has this art style for charms where the cracks and crevices are very dark. To achieve that, I cover the charm in a dark layer of paint, focusing on the aforementioned cracks.

Then I move on to lighter colors. This time, I only paint the top edges.

I try to also copy the shadows with darker colours, it makes for a more interesting look.

Finishing off, I attach a pin with hot glue. Sometimes it doesn’t stick to the back of the charm because it’s too smooth, you can fix that by scratching it.
