anyway after doing some research and really thinking about it I don’t think isaac would be a mortician anymore. from what I’ve discovered, a mortician moreso handles the business aspects of funerals and overall decorates the body to be presentable, it seems — I feel like isaac started off in that direction but got bored VERY quickly. he’s less interested in the upkeep of funerals and while he’s vaguely interested in how burials work, he’s most interested about the body. how it functions, how it shuts down.

so I’ve decided to make him a medical examiner instead. I feel like he would LOVE that shit, especially because he’s the person who’s deliberately trained to examine bodies that died under unusual circumstances. in a way he’s still viewing how the body works, but it’s moreso about what the body’s limits are and how far it can be pushed. it’s a grim job and there are days when stuff does get to him — for instance, examining the bodies of recovered/deceased children or something involving ab*se does affect him on occasion — but he likes how, in a very slight and subtle way, his discoveries help bring closure. he’s concrete and detached, but he does appreciate how what he does is purposeful, deliberate. the body is precise, yet able to be manipulated; his hypotheses are, too

anyway part of the reason i think isaac latched onto miranda so hard is because his birth mother (who i have yet to name. it’ll be symbolic ofc so I need time to think abt it and perfect it) attempted infanticide on him and Julia. before anyone cancels me let me explain RHGJEJJFJF

so back in the slavery era it was, unfortunately, very common for Black mothers to try to kill their children as a way to protect them from becoming enslaved. this is the premise of Toni Morrison’s Beloved: Sethe Suggs, an enslaved woman, tried to kill all of her children (and ended up killing one) to protect them from slavery. Sethe Suggs was based on Margaret Garner, an enslaved woman who killed 2 of her children before she was apprehended. ultimately, these two mothers exemplify how fucking horrific slavery really was — mothers would rather kill their children than let them become enslaved. death and infanticide were better choices than slavery and that is precisely why slavery is so horrifying.

as a brief tangent, motherhood is a dominant theme in Morrison’s work, actually. self sacrifice is our immediate thought when we think of motherhood, where the life of the child is more important than your own. motherhood isn’t without self sacrifice. that’s what makes infanticide so shocking — it explores this idea of motherhood through taking it to the extreme, putting two evils against each other and forcing the mother to choose the lesser evil, the one that most protects her child.

to tie it back to my point about isaac, I absolutely think that his mother tried this with both him and Julia. ultimately, we can assume that this didn’t work for Isaac, since we see in season 2 that he was enslaved - but until we get confirmation of Julia in season 4, I’m going to assume it worked for Julia. I personally think Isaac was smart enough to understand why his mother did this, as he knew the realities of slavery and later went on to live it. (this is also his introduction into his current philosophy on all humans being evil: if you had to kill your own child to protect them, then all humans are evil for forcing the mother to make this choice.) while it does hurt him deeply and there’s a lot of conflicting emotions, he ultimately doesn’t blame his mother and instead blames the system. but this is also so crucial for his relationship to Miranda, and how/why he views her as a maternal figure. the women in his life were forcibly taken away from him, but Miranda was his first look into the idea that women — that people — have the capability to be a definite, constant, gentle force in one’s life

anyway now I’m thinking. I rly like myself but I like the duality I’m able to have with my faves... like no disrespect to people who do this but I really feel like some ppl take liking characters too serious? like. fandom arguments and insulting ppl and writing long philosophical/literary/etc intricate explanations on the fave... and while I do appreciate some of that I like. don’t always have the energy for it. I don’t always have the energy to write long paragraphs on why I fucking hate Marvel’s portrayal of Fat Thor’s or what I think about T’Challa and Erik’s relationship or opinions I have on Isaac. I just don’t! I don’t always have the energy to be serious and it takes a toll on me to always be that way. I like to have fun, I like to poke fun at my faves (over appropriate things ofc) and I’m naturally just... an upbeat person. again, life is too short for me not to accept myself as the silly little bitch that I am and I’m having fun doing what I do so?? yeah

improvements bon and bas want to (and eventually do) bring to pelican town:

- building a school: the old jojamart is instead converted into a K-8 school! that way the kiddos in the town don’t have to rely on tutoring and/or commuting for a majority of their education. penny is one of the first teachers recruited :’) she teaches English ofc. Claire (teaching history), Emily (teaching art), Shane (teaching gym), and Victor (teaching math & science) are recruited as well!

- upgrading the library/museum: it’s renovated expanded to be bigger and more modern, since it’s a pretty old building in general, and technology and software are p fuckin old. bon also donates a lot of books so that there’s a bigger, richer selection - they continue to donate artifacts as well! Bas is the one that helps primarily with this since Bon’s busy with other stuff.

- renovating the hospital: bon feels pretty bad that the hospital is so... like. left-alone. not viewed as urgent so it doesn’t have the best materials. so, hospital is upgraded to be larger and DEFINITELY more modern - better monitors, new technology, better filing systems, better medical equipment, more beds/even private rooms, etc etc.

- building a wildlife conservation center: noah moves to pelican town when bon and bas return!! while bon is more focused on agriculture and technology, noah takes over the environment and wildlife aspects. the old vineyard in the forest nearby Andy’s place is renovated into a cute little conservation center/veterinary place, run by noah!

- constructing new buildings: since the jojamart isn’t a movie theatre anymore, a new theatre is now a separate building! it’s located to the left of the playground. there’s also a new indie bookstore as well; since Morris is now jobless and has nowhere else to go after JojaMart’s destruction, he now runs a cute lil bookstore beside the community center - his background in business came handy! he also takes this time to unlearn those damaging corporate/capitalistic ideologies he had to adopt while being employed under joja for years. also, the new bookstore allows Elliott a place to sell and promote all the books he writes!

bon and bas, year 4 of bon in pelican town: visiting the city together, bas’ first time in the city and somewhere outside of town. they vacation for about a week in the city, bon showing bas all around, trying out different little hole-in-the-wall areas and overall being a new couple in love. bas gets introduced to boba tea and becomes obsessed. bas also sees his first real broadway show, also loves it.

bon and bas, post-year 5 of bon in PT, year 3 of living in the city and doing their own thing. bas is a third-year undergrad student getting a BS in computer science, minor in folklore literature. he hopes to one day make his own game. bon, now Dr. Price, is a(n officially!!) published researcher and likely some sorta NASA scientist lmao. they grow their hair out bc they’re so relaxed and confident and happy!! hence the longer hair :’) they and bas have been engaged for 4-4.5 years atp. after bas finishes school they plan on moving back to PT (after 2-3 more years in the city - bon doesn’t wanna leave their nasa job quite yet lmao) and plan on bringing majorrr improvements to the town, like upgrading the hospital and library and turning the old movie theatre into a school (and building a newer, more modern theatre entirely) etc etc etc. next post will likely outline what they hope to do upon moving back to the valley!

i think bon would definitely dance (I mean they did in-game, I was too excited about finally dating/having 10 hearts with seb and most of the other villagers LMAO) and they’d definitely be like “I didn’t spend the entire month making this whole outfit from scratch for nothing???? we’re going to dance” and ofc it’s awkward and makes bon uncomfortable but it turns into this whole thing. bas is their partner, but bon impromptu dances with everyone else once the legit formal dance is over. bon feels beautiful and like they’ve actually made a home from pelican town. their outfit, a perfect combination of the traditional suits and dresses, is praised and viewed as incredibly creative. bon feels at home.

but after the dance bon ofc takes bas up on the offer. they head out to the woods just past aurora vineyard and come to a little clearing, just where the mossy, lush forest meets the seashore. they sit on a tree stump and just like... talk, about any and everything. crack jokes and talk about how much they like each other and how in sync they are. bas talks about his family/how he frequently feels like he’s in maru’s shadow and that demetrius looks down on him, and dreams, and what he wants from life, and tries to formulate some goals, simple but meaningful, as he’d never expected to really have goals before. bon talks about the farm’s history and scratches the surface in talking about their own family. it’s nothing really along the lines of unearthing traumas - that’s another conversation - but literally just. learning each other. learning their personalities and histories and likes/dislikes and fears and dreams. bas immediately realizes he’s deeply in love with bon, though being the ~suave stoic figure~ he is he doesn’t immediately act on it or announce it. bon realizes the same, though is a bit more fearful: bas is the only person bon has loved-loved, something beyond forceful dating or sexual attraction/booty calls lmao. bon loves their family and friends but this is a new love, something built off of genuine love and trust and hope and admiration.

anddd bas also compliments how nice he thinks bon looks,,,...,..., he thinks it’s so dope how bon made that ENTIRE outfit for the flower dance from scratch. bas thinks the dance is stupid, and after participating in it, Bon thinks the same. but they’ll be damned if they don’t get the most out of that outfit they busted they ass over LMAO. so bas and bon share a clumsy impromptu little dance in the woods...... 👉🏾👈🏾 bon is only a good dancer bc while they went home for the holidays amorette (affectionately) forced them to learn and perfect the flower dance steps. bas is only good bc he’s had to do it for so long. but even then they’re not really dancing, just holding each other and swaying quietly, firefly glow lighting them both up and the sounds of bullfrogs and wind rustling trees and crickets being their music

1) bon proposes to bas during bon’s 5th and final year in pelican town. year 4 was kind of rough: bon was beginning to get emotional bc they knew their time in the valley was coming to an end, and bas kind of questioned their relationship and if it was strong enough to last while bon went back to finish uni. ultimately, bon knows how much bas wants to leave for the city and has complete faith that bas is the one for them. during spring of year 5, bon orders a custom mermaid pendant — a medium-sized shell painted to resemble a purple galaxy with a big, bright full moon, decorated with little rhinestones to represent the stars — and holds onto it until fall. after the spirit’s eve festival, bas’ favorite holiday, bon invites bas to the summit for an ~impromptu date~. the two share s’mores and gaze out onto the valley together, talking about the future yet again, and just as bas is about to ask if bon is absolutely sure they want to leave for the city and not just continue to finish school from pelican town, bon removes the mermaid pendant from their hoodie pocket. “yeah,” they say, looking directly into bas’ eyes. “but I’m not leaving without you.”

2) bas in turn proposes to bon in the most stereotypical romance way LMAOOO, it’s a big surprise for bon since they weren’t expecting A) such a big romantic gesture from bas and B) being proposed to at all. it’s about a year after bon graduates from grad school and 2 years since they moved to the city. they live in a really nice apartment together, just them and their dog, two lizards, and three frogs. bon now has their doctorate and master’s since they did their big dual program and bas is a second-year CS student, since bon inspired him to go back to school. bon comes home after a long day one day to see bas all dressed up — not a full suit ofc, that’s too stuffy for him, but a nice dress shirt and hair slicked back — and holding out a big bouquet of violets. bon throws their head back and laughs, embracing bas tightly and thanking him. there are violet petals scattered everywhere (Bon lightly teases Bas for this, about how much of a pain in the ass it’ll be to clean up) and they share a nice candlelit dinner over takeout from a local restaurant bon really likes. bas asks about bon’s day, and the conversation gets deep. bon talks about how glad they are to have met bas and how bas is 100% the only person bon’s ever loved, not just been sexually attracted to or felt forced to love. bas then gets out of his seat, kneels to his knee, places his right hand on top of bon’s and uses his left hand to remove a black box from his pocket and open it up. there’s a little silver ring, a simple band with a small hole where a glittering aquamarine stone is. bas has this whole speech prepared and bon is trembling, can’t stop smiling, freaking the fuck out and STILL has enough humor to playfully correct him. “bronwen malakai price—” “it’s mal-ah-kay, bas, not mal-ack-eye” “you want this engagement or not?” “god yes, yes, yes of course” (“i haven’t even asked yet” “i know i’m just excited”)

thinking about bon, bas, sam, abby, victor, and sophia spending a whole day (and night!) in the city as a way to take a break from work and relax. going to museums, taking goofy pictures on sophia’s polaroid, recording dumb and obscure and short videos for abby’s and sam’s snapchats, taking one of those tourist bus rides around the city and sitting on the open top to feel the wind and smell the air, and then going to a restaurant in the evening and then walking around boulevards. abby and sophi dragging bon along affectionately as they laugh and talk loudly and window shop after visiting a museum. bon clinging to victor and/or sam because they’re taller. bon discreetly slipping their hand in sebastian’s when they notice him walking behind and staying quiet as they walk the city at night. bas says nothing, but he’s grateful. bon is surrounded by true friends and feels nothing but light and love.

thinking about bon going home to amesbury for the holidays and recording videos for pelican town: this is normal, as bon always records video updates for their research progress and personal life progress to show the university - and they often show these videos to the town, too. since there’s no research back home, Bon just records normal videos and continues to send them to Lewis to be shown on a projector at the community center, where everyone can gather and laugh and bond and see who Bronwen is outside of pelican town. bon showing the town their parents, everyone freaking out that yes, Bronwen is Judge Price’s child, they’re the son she mentioned in her book, oh your dad is that one voice actor too??? holy hell Bronwen?????? bon showing how their family is incredibly supportive and loving and also talking about how grateful they are for pelican town and everyone in it. bon happily announcing that not only did they get everyone in town a gift (and joking that after the new year they’ll come back with a big sack of toys just like Santa himself), but they pulled a few strings with family and connections and managed to get more money flowing into town. Harvey gets updated, modern medical equipment. Emily is offered an internship under Bon’s godmother, the renowned fashion designer Amorette Velt herself. Pierre’s, the library, the hospital, the saloon, Robin’s, and Willy’s all get funding for resources and to expand. bon cracks down on their investigation of Joja. this is only the beginning of progress coming to the town.

thinking about bon getting bas and sam mermaid pendants during their final year in pelican town, insisting that while they shouldn’t officially tie the knot yet, Bon can’t live without either of them and wants to continue to love and support and provide for them. the pendants are custom made: Sam’s is painted to have the color scheme of the sun, yellow and orange and warm, decorated in little jewels - Bas’ colored to the moon/the galaxy, navy and purple and glittering with little jewels as well. thinking about the shock and relief in both Bas and Sam’s eyes as they realize that yes, everything is okay, and they’re finally going to get out of this town and see more of the world. bon being comforted as they pack up their things in the farmhouse, briefly return their animals to Marnie, and harvest the last of their crops. the boxes have been shipped to the city and they and their fiancés are due to be on the next train out of pelican town in the morning. bon announcing their engagement and departure in the same day, promising to one day return to the valley once they’re ready. bon hugging everyone goodbye, especially hugging their friends and the mothers who watched out for them during their first few years in town.
