Civic Action Assessment of Issue
1. As a citizen of this country, I must vote and elect officials that I think will represent my issues and the issues of my community best.
2. In this class, I learned how people have a responsibility to their community. They have to help and provide for it as a dutiful citizen. The only way a community can work well is if each resident contributes their time to their community.
3. I do think it is my civic obligation to help address the problems immigration has created because I spent all this time researching it and learning how it impacts people, and if I don’t do something about it, I feel like my research would go to waste.
4. I volunteered my time and went on the field trip to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and watched two immigration cases and three civil cases. We went on December 5, and learned how the cases move through the courts and how it takes a long time for judges to make their decisions. I also learned how these immigration cases are more than people staying illegally, for some of them it is a matter of life or death.

Political Interest Groups, and PACs Assessment
1a.) Federation for American Immigration Reform
1b.) FAIR is interested in reducing immigration to a more normal level to allow America to manage growth, address environmental concerns, and maintain a higher quality of life.
1c.) They believe that a reduction in illegal immigrants will result in a better quality of life for Americans. They want to see Washington allow immigration but to a certain extent. They campaign by promoting the smaller things Congress can do to limit immigration and border security.
-includes both sides of the argument, shows sanctuary cities but also has headlines that grab the attention of people who are looking to push out immigrants.
-has various places you can donate, not just one button
-discusses how immigration and illegal aliens impact our current economy and workforce
-uses other issues like environmental problems and climate change to push for fewer immigrants
-features Obama’s photo and not Trump’s
1d.) They support Florida’s anti-sanctuary law, which bans dangerous sanctuaries in Florida, and enforces the nation’s immigration laws.
1e.) FAIR is located in Washington D.C..
1f.) I couldn’t find any volunteer opportunities, but on their website there is a page to take action and it has links for “reporting illegal aliens” and “demanding Congress finally punish sanctuary cities”.
1g.) I find it interesting how the home page on the website instills fear in viewers. They have their Trump endorsement and headlines like “How Much Are You Paying for Illegal Immigration?”.
2a.) California Immigrant Policy Center
2b.) Their goal is to inform the public on immigration issues, and public debates regarding immigration, and how these impact California’s population of immigrants and their families.
2c.) The California Immigrant Policy Center advocates for immigrants and their families by protesting and having advocates go on the news and explain pro-immigration policies and how they would work.
2d.) CIPC doesn’t endorse, but desires, Gavin Newsom for his way of handling healthcare for all.
2e.) CIPC is located in California with three offices, in Los Angeles, Oakland, and Sacramento.
2f.) The California Immigrant Policy Center hosts Immigration Day, where people come together to listen and talk about policies that impact the immigration rights movement.
2g.) I noticed that on their page, they mention Trump’s name more than FAIR who likes Trump, but the CIPC talks about him negatively. The top headlines have Trump’s name and following it are synonyms for “dislike” then one of his anti-immigrant ideas.
3a.) Americans Against Illegal Immigration
3b.) This PAC is against illegal immigrants. They support immigration as long as it is done legally.
3c.) In 2010 during their last cycle, they raised $12,955, spent $13,648, and began with $693 on hand.
3d.) Their entire budget went to Republicans.
3e.) A lot of their donors were people who are retired, or their occupation is “homeowner”. It shows the age groups of people who are donating, mostly baby boomers.

State and Legislative Action
1a. Assembly member Kahan does not have anything on her website briefing her position on immigration rights, but State Senator Glazer does have his statement regarding immigration detention centers. State Senator Glazer is dissatisfied with the detention centers and how inhumane the conditions are. Rebecca Bauer-Kahan does not have immigration rights in her recent news because it is bigger than a state issue. Immigration rights are a national issue, but the entire state of California is impacted by it, the resolution falls under federal authority not state.
1b. I agree with Glazer’s opinion because the detention centers are inhumane living spaces for people who came for a better life, many of these who were detained were just deported and not breeding crime.
1c. Rebecca Bauer-Kahan and Steve Glazer have not sponsored any bills that relate to immigration rights.
2a.-2d. N/A
2e. Our state interprets immigration rights as a quality people cannot be discriminated against. There are laws protecting immigrants from people of higher power who sometimes feel like they can abuse immigrants since they “aren’t from here”.
3a. Mark DeSaulnier, Kamala Harris, Diane Feinstein all support immigration and are trying to get detainees the respect they deserve.
3b. Kamala Harris didn’t sign any bills, but she introduced the Homeland Security Improvement Act.
4a. Yes there are, there are a lot of bills that pertain to immigration rights.
4b. H.R 4803
4c. The bill is saying how only kids of a certain age area at risk of losing their entire family, and how other kids are grown up enough that they can do it themselves.
4d. It will help kids in poorer areas, to keep their citizenship and it will give them an opportunity to learn more.
4e. I would vote yea, because it is wrong to separate kids born in the states vs. kids born American but from somewhere else.
4f. It originated in the House. It was reviewed by committees who are against the construction of the wall.

POLITICAL PARTY ACTION
a.) The GOP makes it clear that they do not support illegal immigration or immigration rights. The Democratic Party makes it obvious that they support legal immigration, as long as people recognize that the current immigration system is broken, and needs to be corrected. The Libertarian Party does not have immigration rights, or immigration-related topics on its platform, making it clear that it is not a top priority of theirs. The Green Party stands for social justice regardless of immigration status. Like the Democrats, the Green Party supports immigration and acknowledges that the system is broken and needs to be corrected. The Peace and Freedom Party is in support of immigration rights through a desire for open borders, end to deportation, and rights for non-citizens.
b.) I agree with the Democrats, the Green Party, and the Peace and Freedom parties because I think immigration is a touchy topic that many people refuse to acknowledge. Although some parties aren’t doing anything about immigration rights, I agree with them that something needs to be done about the situation many residents of the USA are dealing with.
c.) I identify most with the Green Party because of their environmental acts and stand with immigrants. This is not surprising to me because I was far on the left for our in-class-spectrum. I would probably vote for the third party or the democratic ceremony.

CONSTITUTIONAL ISSUES
1. Sessions v. Morales-Santana
2. The case was decided on June 12, 2017
3. A man born to non-married, citizen father and a non-citizen mother was not seen as a U.S. citizen because his father did not spend the total required time needed for his son to receive the transfer citizenship.
4.  Did the statutory distinction between the physical presence requirements for transferral of derivative citizenship for unwed citizen mothers and unwed citizen fathers of foreign-born children violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Fifth Amendments.
5. The fourteenth amendment is in question here.
6. The judges decided in favor or Morales-Santana.
7. This establishes the precedent that people will not be disadvantaged by any person the bias of gender.
8. I agree with the court because the citizenship Morales-Santana was given, was not fair for the transferral of derivative of unwed mothers and citizens.
S: The subject is Morales-Santana and his fight against the Sessions
A: The article was written by Oyes
C: The man in the article wants U.S. citizenship but due to his complicated parental situation, he doesn’t have a complete home anymore.
A: The author seems slightly biased by putting the cases together and the file is not chosen randomly.
P: My article is important because it established what to do in a situation with people who aren’t married and for the sake of the baby.
S: I do agree with the article because it shows that women have control over their own bodies, except for when it gets in the way.

MEDIA ASSESSMENT OF THE ISSUE
1-2.  Sick Immigrants Undergoing Lifesaving Care Can Now Be Deported
URL: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/29/us/immigrant-medical-treatment-deferred-action.html
S: Those who need the lifesaving care found in America and are here legally for it are now being deported.
A: The article was written by two women who are immigration activists and reporters for the NY Times.
C: The article came out August 29, 2019, shortly after the “deferred action” program was eliminated. The timing of this article could reveal deeper issues of eliminating the program using real-life examples.
A: The source was created for New York Times readers who are impacted by immigration changes.
P: The article is subjective but shows both the sides of ICE and of those impacted. The authors claim that the elimination of this “deferred action program” negatively impacts those who are part of it.
S: The author uses personal stories, like that of Isabel Bueso’s to help support their claim that elimination negatively impacting those who are in the program.
Undocumented Immigrants on Edge, as new Trump Policy Calls for More Deportations
URL: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2019/08/13/new-trump-immigration-policy-means-more-deportations-across-us/1880847001/
S: Under the Trump administration, ICE now can unilaterally question, arrest, detain, or deport anyone who is undocumented and has been in the U.S. for more than two weeks.
A: The article was written by Alan Gomez, an immigration reporter at USA Today.
C: The article was published August 13, 2019; at the time of the most massive U.S. immigration raid in a decade.
A: It was written for educated readers of USA Today, and those who want to learn more about current immigration updates.
P: The article is objective; it contrasts the perspective of those who are impacted by deportation and their lawyers, and ICE.
S: The lawyers and their statements about their clients not being able to get asylum hearings and ICE utilizing expedited removal are evidence of the competing perspectives.
Trump Threatens Ending Birthright Citizenship for Children of Illegal Immigrants
URL: https://www.nationalreview.com/news/trump-claims-he-is-seriously-considering-ending-birthright-citizenship-for-children-of-illegal-immigrants/
S: The subject of the article is Trump mentioning ending birthright citizenship for children of illegal immigrants.
A: The article was written by Jack Crowe, a news reporter at the National Review.
C: It was published August 21, 2019, following the largest U.S. immigration raid in the decade.
A: It was written for educated and conservative readers who might get riled up about the idea of eliminating birthright citizenship for “anchor babies.”
P: The article is objective.  It claims that if Trump “seriously” goes through with it, he will still have a lot of obstacles like constitutional challenges which could balance his decision.
S: The evidence used in the article is Trump’s statements surrounding birthright citizenship for “anchor babies” and the constitutional amendments and challenges he would have to go through before it could pass.
3. All three articles seem to show how immigration is not being handled with the care it should be and how capturing more people is not the solution.
4. I identify most with the NY Times because I personally see how taking away legal lifesaving medical care is essentially ordering a death sentence, and how there are not enough alternative solutions to help figure out the medical care situation.

CONCEPTUALIZING THE ISSUE AND ASSESSING TYPES OF ACTION
1. I chose immigration rights and DACA because I want to learn more about something that is impacting many of my peers.
2. It is in an issue because some people were brought here at a young age or did not have a choice and the US is what they know as home. They grew up here and have lives and jobs, but now they’re being sent back to a country they don’t know, with nothing and no knowledge about the place. If they’re not getting sent back, they’re being left here with nothing and are separated from their families.
3. I think that there needs to be an allowance and someone to check-in and help people who are being deported. There needs to be an arranged set up for someone entering a country they do not know and are being forced back to.
4. Kamala Harris, Marielena Hincapie, National Immigration Law Center, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and DSA Immigrants’ Rights. I follow these people and groups because they are very vocal about immigration and the current issues with the separation of families. Currently, I have not found any tweets that are grabbing my attention and are related to my topic, but I am sure in the next few hours I will find something that pertains to both.
