PR9 Interactivity - Research Proposal
154013 - Therese Opaker
154089 - Sara Strande Rønnestad
Culture night exhibit 2016 @ MOTI
“Sound Lightning”
 What you intend to do?
We are going to design a three-dimensional, performative interaction and art installation, which will transform the perception of space inside a room. The installation consists of an old grand piano, which is connected to multiple fluorescent lights. We call it “Sound Lightning”.
How you intend to do it?
Our project will be feasible by integrating touch-technology in the piano keys, and connecting the piano keys to the fluorescent lights. The lights will be installed from the piano towards the ceiling, and the light will be spreading out, as you play the keys of the piano, into reverse lightning.
 Who the target audience is?
Our target audience is people that like to visit museums, are curious about digital art and technology. They are curious about new discoveries and are not afraid of the unknown. They appreciate a good surprise, enjoys music and light design.
What specific roles do the public have?
The installation will be in a separate room inside MOTI - the Museum of the Image in Breda - a semi-public space. The public will be the performers interacting with our interactive system. The audience will benefit from creating their own experience by what the play on the piano. Each piano key is connected to certain fluorescent lights. Each combination of piano keys touched makes a personal performance and experience for the performer.
 What technology is involved?
The project will involve installation of fluorescent lights connected to the keys of the grand piano. The technology will be to integrate touch-technology into each of the keys in the piano. The touch of the keys will react with the fluorescent lights and spread as lightning through the room.
Why is your project needed?
“Sound Lightning” will be a good asset to the culture night exhibit 2016 at MOTI, because our interactive system engages the public to be performers as a part of the experience. The lights will be an element of surprise to the performer and the spectators, which will result in an entertaining and fascinating light show out of the ordinary. “Sound Lightning” will be a performative interaction and art installation, where people will make their own experience.

Inspiration: Carlo Bernardini
“Carlo Bernardini was born in Viterbo, Italy in 1966. He started out his career in the early 90s with an abstract painting that concentrated on the dialectical relationship between line and monochrome, diversified moments of representative conception of space-light. The light, however, will be identified later with the luminescence of phosphor, through lines and veilings, creating layers of white colour, visible in two distinct and autonomous visual conditions.
The first one is the vision in the real light, while the second corresponds to the vision in the dark, almost like a photo negative of the first one. During the first half of the 90s, Bernardini starts dealing with the third dimension in his works. At first he has steel pipes come out of canvas or a board that cast real shadows; then, since 1996 he has been planning and working on big optical fibre installations, stainless steel and optical fibre sculptures-installations, OLF (Optical lighting film) surfaces and electro-luminescent surfaces that the viewers perceive in a different way and in a different form, depending on where their position in the space is.”
