How to connect with other students to achieve the Common

When we think of student engagement in learning activities, it is often convenient to understand engagement with an activity as being represented by good behaviour (i.e. behavioural engagement), positive feelings (i.e. emotional engagement), and, above all, student thinking (i.e. cognitive engagement) .This is because students may be behaviourally and/or emotionally invested in a given activity without actually exerting the necessary mental effort to understand and master the knowledge, craft, or skill that the activity promotes.
1. Make It Meaningful
In aiming for full engagement, it is essential that students perceive activities as being meaningful. Research has shown that if students do not consider a learning activity worthy of their time and effort, they might not engage in a satisfactory way. To ensure that activities are personally meaningful.
2. Foster a Sense of Competence
The notion of competence may be understood as a student's ongoing personal evaluation of whether he or she can succeed in a learning activity or challenge. (Can I do this?) Researchers have found that effectively performing together an activity can positively impact subsequent engagement. To strengthen students' sense of competence in learning activities, the assigned activities could:
Ø Be only slightly beyond students' current levels of proficiency
Ø Make students demonstrate understanding throughout the activity
Ø Show peer coping models (i.e. students who struggle but eventually succeed at the activity)
Ø Include feedback that helps students to make progress
3. Provide Autonomy Support
We may understand autonomy support as nurturing the students' sense of control over their behaviours and goals. When teachers relinquish control (without losing power) to the students, rather than promoting compliance with directives and commands, student engagement levels are likely to increase as a result .Autonomy support can be implemented by:
Ø Welcoming students' opinions and ideas into the flow of the activity
Ø Using informational, non-controlling language with students
Ø Giving students the time they need to understand and absorb an activity by themselves
4. Embrace Collaborative Learning
Collaborative learning is another powerful facilitator of engagement in learning activities. When students work effectively with others, their engagement may be amplified as a result, mostly due to experiencing a sense of connection to others during the activities. To make group work more productive, strategies can be implemented to ensure that students know how to communicate and behave in that setting.
5. Establish Positive Teacher-Student Relationships
High-quality teacher-student relationships are another critical factor in determining student engagement, especially in the case of difficult students and those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. When students form close and caring relationships with their teachers and with team, they are fulfilling their developmental need for a connection with others and a sense of belonging in society. Teacher-student relationships can be facilitated by:
Ø Caring about students' social and emotional needs
Ø Displaying positive attitudes and enthusiasm
Ø Avoiding deception or promise-breaking
6. Promote Mastery Orientations
Students' perspective of learning activities also determines their level of engagement. When students pursue an activity because they want to learn and understand (i.e. mastery orientations), rather than merely obtain a good grade, look smart, please their parents, or outperform peers (i.e. performance orientations), their engagement is more likely to be full and thorough. To encourage this mastery orientation mindset, consider various approaches, such as framing success in terms of learning rather than performing .
7. Address race and racial dynamics in the classroom.
8. Connect to students’ future selves. Teachers need to recognise that all their students have dreams about what their futures will look like. “We recognise that Students have hopes and dreams and goals for themselves and we can help them to see how to get there”.

HOW PEER PRESSURE UNDERMINES SUCCESS

New research finds that peer pressure can adversely impact important educational decisions.
When SAT prep sign-ups at three high schools were public—meaning that classmates could see who participating— 53 percent of students was expressed an interest in the classes. But the participation rate shot up to 80 percent when the sign-ups were offered in a private setting that shielded students from the prying eyes of their peers, according to a study from the National Bureau of Economic Research.
Students in the study said that they expected their SAT scores to go up by at least 100 points by taking the prep package—a bump from the 50th percentile to the 69th percentile—but they were willing to sacrifice that critical improvement to save face with their peers.
“High school students are willing to forgo educational investment opportunities due to concerns about how they will be perceived by their classmates,” the study concludes.
Confidence, not peer pressure, is key to success, say researchers
It has long been one of education's central tenets: pupils benefit from being around children who are brighter than them. Competition in the classroom raises standards across the board, so the argument goes, because the example of the brightest pupils will rub off on the rest of their class.
But a new study, which tracks the exam performance of more than two million pupils in England, suggests this view fails to tell the whole story. Coming up against higher-achieving peers could have a damaging impact on the confidence of those pupils who believe they are in the bottom half of their class, the study concludes.
Peer pressure doesn't always make people act.
The conventional wisdom is that people are more likely to do something if they hear that their friends or co-workers are doing it. The researchers decided to employ a peer-pressure based strategy to attempt to boost enrolment in the company's retirement savings plans.
As it turns out, the mantra that "everyone else is doing it," doesn't always sway people to act. In this case, it actually discouraged action. "What it looks like is happening is that these people seem to be getting discouraged that others are so far ahead of them financially"
"When people know it's a cooperative effort, they feel peer pressure to take part," David Rand, one of the paper's co-authors said in a press release when the study was released. "They think, 'If I don't do this, I'm going to look like a jerk.' But if it's not observable, then there's no problem with not participating."
Myths about Peer Pressure
Bullying Prevention Month
National Bullying Prevention Month shines a spotlight on this critical issue in schools and youth programs. Bullying undermines learning and development, and it can have tragic consequences for students. Whether as a bully, a victim, a bystander, or an upstander, each and every student is affected.
Ø Bullying is normal. Sometimes people will dismiss concerns about bullying, saying that it’s just part of growing up. In reality, the vast majority of young people do not bully others. However, when bullying behaviours evoke laughter, cheers, or feelings of power, they are reinforced and create a culture that condones bullying.
Ø Peer pressure is always negative. Too often, we assume that peer pressure is what happens when someone gets gullible, vulnerable, or maladjusted kids to do something bad or risky.
To help students learn to influence others in positive ways. We do this by helping them learn to write and speak persuasively and by cultivating leadership skills. So being influenced by and influencing peers is an inevitable and important part of growing up and being part of society.
Ø Adults don’t play a role. A great deal of peer pressure (including bullying) occurs away from the watchful eyes of teachers, staff, parents, and other adults. That can leave the impression that “kids will have to work this out among themselves.”
Modeling positive, respectful relationships with all young people;
Creating a cooperative, respectful climate in classrooms or programs; and
Giving students opportunities to work together cooperatively, talk about what their learning, support their opinions with evidence, and provide feedback to each other—all important 21st century skills.

Liberal Arts Majors who put Business Studies Majors to shame!

ISBM University has three schools dedicated to Liberal Arts Major. School of Arts & Humanities, School of Library & information Science and School of Journalism & Mass Communication. Many Indian and Asian students now have warmed up to Libreal Arts and it is no longer a back option. If you are contemplating getting a degree in Liberal Arts have a look at some of the Top Business Tycoons and CEO from around the World who have used their Liberal Arts Major to put even the top Business minds to shame.

Howard Schultz, Starbucks CEO
Degree: B.S. in Communications, Northern Michigan University, 1975
Howard grew up in a middle class family who lived in the Projects in Brooklyn and attended college on a football scholarship. While majoring in communications he got worried in his final year and took a few business classes. He did so because he was scared of his job prospects. He still says that he never realised the value of his degree ‘til a lot later.
When Howard was asked how he achieved and created a successful brand he said, “It took years before I found my passion in life, but getting out of Brooklyn and earning a college degree gave me the courage to keep on dreaming." Schultz added: " I can't give you any secret recipe for success. But m y own experience suggests that it is possible to start from nothing and achieve even beyond your dreams."

Andrea Jung, Former Avon CEO
Degree: B.A. in English Literature, Princeton University, 1979
A trailblazer for female CEOs, Jung finds it hard to believe how a Princeton bookworm came to lead the world's largest direct cosmetics seller, where she was chief from 1999 to 2012. "What I find myself doing [now] was pretty unimaginable for me in 1979, after I finished my much-loved thesis on Katherine Mansfeld and my junior papers on Virginia Woolf," Jung told students in a 2012 speech at her alma mater. " To be standing here, and saying, 'I now run a $10 billion global company'—I would've said, 'Couldn't be possible, that is not an imagined career path, not an imagined journey.' Things have certainly taken a wonderful, but different, path."

Patrick M. Byrne CEO Overstock.com
Degree: Philosophy and Asian Studies, Dartmouth
Patrick M. Byrne’s lists of activities and accomplishments would be a stretch even by Hollywood’s standards. He has a bachelor’s from Dartmouth, a master’s from Cambridge and a PhD from Stanford. He is a cancer survivor and a black belt in tae-kwon-do. He rode his bike across the continental U.S. in order to raise money for cancer research.
Always enterprising and opportunistic, Byrne started Overstock.com, an e-commerce site designed to sell leftover inventory from the dozens of dot coms that crashed in 1999. The site has since evolved to function as a standard online shopping portal.

Denise M. Morrison
Degree: Economics and Psychology, Boston College, President Campbells Soup Company
Though Denise M. Morrison began her career at Procter & Gamble, she soon found her way to the food industry. Her résumé includes a series of household snack brands, from Nabisco to Nestlé to Pepsi-Cola. She jumped into the public spotlight after being appointed to executive vice president at Kraft Foods.
Backed by her years of food industry experience, she joined Campbells in 2003 and ascended to CEO in 2011.

Michael Eisner, Former Walt Disney Company CEO
Degree: B.A. in English Literature and Theater, Denison University, 1964
"Literature is unbelievably helpful, because no matter what business you are in, you are dealing with interpersonal relationships. It gives you an appreciation of what makes people tick," argued Eisner, who served as Disney CEO from 1984 to 2005.
few months after graduation, in late 1964, Eisner received his first job offer, an NBC clerk where he logged the times each commercial appeared on air, and whether they were black-and-white—for just $65 per week. "It was far better than being unemployed," he wrote in his autobiography. Later, he quickly scaled the corporate ladder at ABC and Paramount Pictures, before serving as Disney's chief from 1984 to 2005. As the New York Times said of Eisner's skill set in a 1998 article: "Eisner is unusual among entertainment moguls because he has had both creative and corporate experience. He knows how you put a show together and avoid going broke doing it."
Still confused about persuing your passion in Liberal Arts?

Apps that help students to keep a track of their expenses and set the budget for a month.

If you’re sick of going through the monthly panic around paying your bills, consider seeking help from your phone. There are several free apps that do the heavy lifting for you. With these tools, you can optimise your budget to identify where you are wasting money you can use these apps to hit your financial goals. These spending tracker apps link to your bank and credit card accounts. Because of this, they more or less run on autopilot. You don’t need to manually input deposits and expenses as you would if you were tracking your budget on a spreadsheet. There’s no need to spend an hour every day working on a budget when the best personal finance apps automate much of it and help you quickly learn habits and alert you to costly money mistakes before they happen. These few apps can help you track your monthly expenses and generate a budget.

Ø MINT Budgeting App
Mint is perhaps the most popular all-in-one tool for sticking to a budget plan.
Mint is easy to recommend for three reasons: one, it’s a trusted, venerable app in a space where lots of players come and go. Two, it has continually invested in new features since being acquired by Intuit in 2009, and it now offers tools for paying your bills, checking your credit score, and making progress toward your savings goals. And three, it’s ubiquitous — you can get it on Android, iOS, and the web.

Ø DIGIT App
Digit’s arrival in 2015 was so welcome. Once you sign up, Digit creates a new savings account and manages it for you, socking away a few dollars at a time from your checking account. It learns when your bills are due and withdraws money only when it believes you wouldn’t miss the cash. The average user saves about 5 percent of their salary over the course of a year, not accounting for the savings that they later withdraw from their Digit account.
Digit, on the other hand, makes the savings process as painless as possible. It sets aside a little money every few days so you don’t even notice it missing.

Ø POCKETGUARD Budget App
The PocketGuard budget app connects directly to your bank accounts so that you can always have access to your current transactions and balance. The feature that stood out to us when we started using it is the ability to see money in simple terms.
On the home screen there is a number that shows you how much money is in your pocket now, your income and how much you have spent. The app analyzes your spending to identify recurring payments that you need to plan for and can identify your income so that you have a good idea of your cashflow.
Simple charts outline where you spend your money, and a tap shows what you are spending in each category. This is an essential tool in finding places to cut back and to optimise your purchases.

Ø GOODBUDGET App
GoodBudget is a digital envelope budget system that helps you manage your finances using the envelope budgeting method without carrying around a stack of envelopes when you need to make payments. It's an envelope budget for the digital age.
Instead of trying to reconcile envelopes, your budgets sync across all of your devices from iPhone to Android so everyone knows where money is going. The app can help you learn how to save for big purchases.
