The beauty of Pench

The land of Mowgli, Pench National Park that lies in the lower southern region of Satpuda hills is named after the Pench River. The national park lies on the border of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh in districts of Seoni and Chhindwara.

Pench National park is a combination of Indira Priyadarshani Pench National Park and Mowgli Pench Sanctuary. The total area of the park is 758sq.km where 299 sq kms is core area where as remaining is buffer. The area of the present tiger reserve has a glorious history. A description of its natural wealth and richness occurs in Ain-i-Akbari. Pench Tiger Reserve and its neighborhood is the original setting of Rudyard Kipling’s most famous work, The Jungle Book.

Pench was declared as a sanctuary in 1977 later given a status of National Park in 1983. In year 1992, it was declared as a Tiger Reserve. In 2011, the park was awarded as the ‘BEST MANAGEMENT AWARD’. The park is closed half day every Wednesday and during monsoons. The peak season to visit Pench National park is from 1st October to 15th June.

Pench National Park harbours more than 210 species including several migratory ones. Some of them are peafowl, junglefowl, crow pheasant, crimson-breasted barbet, red-vented bulbul, racket-tailed drongo, Indian roller, magpie robin, lesser whistling teal, pintail, shoveller, egret and herons, minivet, oriole, wagtail, munia, myna, waterfowl and blue kingfisher and list goes on.

Famous Tigers of Pench

BMW MALE - This is a huge hulk of Pench Tiger reserve. Called BMW because of the notable marking of letters B,M and W  on  its left thigh. First sighted in 2006 this male is about 11 years of age. Bmw’s ancestry is unknown but he has fathered cubs of many pench tigresses.

Raiyakassa male - Raiyakassa male or Sula male is very much in his prime called sula cause of the wine glass marking he adorns.He has his territory in raiyakassa area.This 10 year old hunk is very charming and is favourite  boy of Pench.
