Ryan’s raised eyebrows and wink of “He knows” assuredness is freaking hilarious but Oliver’s little shrug and head tilt is the cutest gesture I’ve ever seen on a man of that stature.

I think my biggest annoyance about this episode is that it doesnt really feel like it’s a continuation of the previous one? At least when it comes to buck and eddie. Buck randomly asking for a transfer when the previous episode had him having that talk with pepa, his reunion with chris (symbolizing that he still has a family and that things arent as fractured as they seem) and ESPECIALLY that scene where he works together to end that fire with hen and chim symbolizing that they are still a team and that’s just… ignored? Buck suddenly doesnt give a shit about hen and chim? And i get it, he’s still grieving but then what the fuck was the purpose of 8x17 if it wasn’t him starting the ACTUAL healing process? Him randomly choosing to transfer is so… odd and out of place? And Eddie! What is the purpose of that talk he had with hen & karen where he slips out that LA is his home and that he’s worried about buck? What’s the purpose of showing us how happy he looks when he sees buck snd chris together again (showcasing that he knows his family is in LA?) All of this just for him to still seem to be eager to leave for Texas at the end of the emergency when it was such a great set up for him to realize he wants to stay and work with the people he cares about? Apparently since Chris didn’t even need any convincing to go back to LA?????? Was this weird dissonance between the two episodes and the character writing really just to set up chimney’s speech at the end (which mind u kenny killed but I’m really struggling to enjoy)??
Like I dont think they could have dropped the ball harder than this if they tried.

That’s the thing. Eddie didn’t want to leave again so him choosing to stay wouldn’t have been that big a leap to make. One minute Eddie’s lamenting that he “should have been there”, the next he’s…assuaged his guilt with one last group save, then is ditching his 118 family again??
It’s not like they will even use it for Buck angst about being a consolation prize and doubting Eddie next season (although I guarantee some fic writers are already stretching their typing fingers to do so).
Chimney’s speech was terrific and even if it was a more convenient writing choice to be sparked by Eddie (although arguably Buck transferring provides the same motivation to act, albeit less urgent), we could have still had that with just a little more deliberation on his words from Eddie and reflection about his priorities now that Chris is back in his custody.
they had the perfect setup to make eddie realise that he couldn’t be away from his family after seeing this emergency and showing that him jumping in to help made him realise where he belongs etc and they just.. made it seem like he was still eager to leave?
i know he stayed in the end and chimney’s speech was great but i just. wanted eddie to choose this for himself for once yknow?

This is absolutely my favourite part of this glorious, hilarious, flirty AF cornucopia of those two menaces.
Their voices, Oliver's head roll and hand motions, their verbal expressions, the OG tweet that sparked the exchange (thank you for your service, fellow fan). So good.

Yep. Wasted opportunities abound. Let a story arc develop and breathe deeply (on the damn screen). Let character growth be consistent. Make the story outcomes feel earned and inevitable. Not sudden, forced and superficial.
Then again, if you're gonna make dumb decisions and double down on it (like, ooh, killing off a beloved main for shock value then fumbling the execution of that and the aftermath), maybe a quick resolution is less tedious for pissed off viewers.
im just. not a single storyline this season had satisfying conclusion. not the texas arc for eddie. not bathena rebuilding the house. not bobby dying. not madney expecting a second child. not henren adopting mara. not chris returning home. not whatever the fuck was buck’s storyline this season. nothing that happened matters. so much was done either offscreen or in a rushed montage at the very end of the episode. why. just why.

100% this because Buck always puts everybody else first. Besides which, he’s entitled to feel abandoned or adrift in his sea of grief just as much as the rest of them. Yet still, he’s worried about them and wanting to help. In fact, keeping his own feelings on the down low so he can focus on the team. A team who act like they’re merely tolerating the manifestation of his spiral.
Eddie accusing him the first time using that line was weird enough given their mutual sadness and frustration at Eddie leaving but we let it slide because of their tumultuous feelings and it was a fair response to Buck’s sabotage of the potential sublet visits. However, in this episode, it was really out of place and felt like flogging a dead horse.
On another note, the writers seriously needs to let the “Buck making things about himself” line go. Like seriously it’s tired and it doesn’t fit the character anymore. It’s so reductive of Buck’s growth and in this case isn’t even appropriate with the narrative. Like just last episode you were writing about how Buck is dismissing Maddie’s concern about him by saying ‘i go to therapy’. Buck picking up Eddie from the airport. Buck letting Ravi stay in his and Eddie’s home before the funeral so he didn’t have to prepare for it alone. Buck talking to Chim about his survivor’s guilt. And even in this episode Hen and Eddie was talking about how Buck is fussing over them with the grief test. Bro is doing everything except making things about himself.
Please there are a better lines out there i promise. Maybe going with “you act like you’re going through this alone” would’ve fit the scene more and conveyed Eddie’s intentions better.

no but it cracks me up that all this time buck was walking around with this feeling of “my bro is the most attractive dude on the planet. like, he’s so pretty, any girl would be lucky to have him. i’m kind of jealous of them (joking, of course. or am i?..), but i get it. and he’s also such an amazing dad. and he’s so smart, and so brave, and so reliable, and so funny, and so cool. literally the best person alive. i’m just happy for his girlfriends, ‘cause they get to have this guy to themselves. but also i hope he never has another best friend like me, ‘cause no one is allowed to take my place in his life. it’s all i have”
and eddie was walking around with this feeling of “wow, i just made the bestest friend in the world. he cares about me and he loves my child so much. i want to spend all my time with him. i want to talk with him about everything. i want to listen to him talk about everything. i want to see him every day. i trust him with my life. i trust him with my son, which is even more important than my life. now that i’ve gotten to know him, i can’t really imagine my future without him in it. also, i have this weird swirl of feelings inside my chest when i see him with his romantic partners, but i have no idea what it is. it’s too confusing for me, so my brain is just kind of unable to process it. i trust him with my darkest secrets and i’m not afraid of him seeing me at my lowest, ‘cause i feel like he always accepts all of me with understanding instead of judgment. my life feels empty and wrong without him by my side. i might need him almost as much as i need my son at this point, wow. he’s just the most important person in my life. again, after my son. but i realized that i need both of them beside me to feel happy”
and for 7 years, they genuinely didn’t understand what it meant, because eddie was too inexperienced and emotionally repressed to be able to comprehend what his feelings actually meant, and buck was too unaware of what his feelings for men meant
so all these years they were really just walking around being in love with each other but not having a single idea that they were, because they really thought that this is just how platonic camaraderie feels like -
until tommy's intervention and eddie's move to el paso finally opened their eyes and gave them a new perspective from which they could look at their feelings toward each other and finally be able to understand them
their story gets me every time. like, it’s so stupid and unhinged and beautiful
and something like this really could only happen by accident, ‘cause i don’t think any tv show writer is smart enough to create something so raw and complex as their relationship from scratch
it just kind of happened by itself. and i love it

tbh, the only thing that makes bobby’s death feel official to me is that line about honoring the real-life first responders
if he turns out to be alive, then this will feel like a spit in the face to the actual tragedies people experience in real life
but if he’s actually dead, then it still feels disrespectful - both to real-life first responders and to the fans of the show - because this goodbye wasn’t properly handled
they should’ve dedicated the whole episode to the characters and their grief, without any time jumps, so that his death could feel real, but also so that fans could come to terms with it alongside the characters
if this is tim’s idea of good writing and a thoughtful exploration of characters dealing with the loss of someone so important, then he’s definitely lost his mind
all the expectations he set up in his interviews about the new episode weren’t fulfilled
like, it’s all bad either way
i feel like the only people who thought this was a good episode are the same people who liked the supernatural finale
it just tells me they’re not as invested in the show and don’t understand the characters and story as deeply
at least with game of thrones, pretty much everyone agreed it was a shitty ending
but i hate when writers have so much power in their hands, and instead of using it with wisdom, they ruin everything just because they don’t care enough
tv is supposed to be an escape from real-life issues, but instead it’s the same fucking problems everywhere
