Final Piece
final piece
For my final project I have been focusing on mental heath, as it is habitat of our body and actions. I started by looking at dreams and how you process your mental heath through them. This lead me on to showing PTSD, in the form of double exposure in a manual and digital based. My idea revolve conveying to my audience who may suffer from mental heath that your not alone and to show people that don’t suffer from it what its I really like thought a visual language. This part really resonated with me as it felt quite personal, however i wonted to look at mental heath in a different light. After looking at Hans- peter Feldmenn’s work, out people out. This inspired me to explore more creative ways to convey guardian angels. From then on I used this to reach out to my audience as I feel this is the best way. I uses this information to inspire a new way I could convey my message in a creative aspects. I experimented by adding paints onto the image, collage’s, poke hole, and sewing. After practising these technique for a while what stood out to me was the sewing because I can utilised grounding technique into my images. This brought a new aspect to “normal” photography and a way of helping people with mental heath disorders. Along side all the creative aspects I did research on artist, mental heath issues, therapy’s and grounding ecs.. this would widen my knowledge on this subject along with helping me make the best decisions on how I present my final piece.
For my final images I had 3 sections: family, therapy pets and yourself.
family: I wanted to show my audience who they have around them to help at any time the most prominent one being family. I used the word family because it mean’s support and always being there when you need them. family doesn’t have to describe people that you are blood related to most people see family as there close friend that are always there through good and bad times. When doing my final piece on family I picked a photo of my sister in high heels and my niece standing on an apple. I picked this photo because it don’t have any faces in. What’s important about that is that it makes the them anonymous. This help the audience resonate with it on a more personal level better then it would have been if the people in the photo has assigned identity. On this photo I stitched a paper aeroplane this represents childhood and a journey. I also put a butterfly on the apple witch show’s how the person is going to grow up to be someone else’s guardian angel. When making this I had to have 3 attempts at it, first the paper rips because I sowed it to close to the edge, 2nd the paper ripped again because I pulled the butterfly too hard and I didn’t like the colour of the legging .The issue I encountered with the legging was when I try and smooth out scratches as the colour of the black legging made them more prominent. My final attempt was successful. during my final go, I made the change to remove my jewellery and i didn’t sewing onto the black legging this prevented making scratchers the image. This worked for me and I manged to conclude the family section of my final piece. This displayed my ability to convey my own style; connecting with they audience via photography and sewing.
Therapy pet’s: The aim of this piece was to showcase all the different aspects of professional help. I did this by taking a photo of a girl accompanied by a dog. The dog represents the professional help accessible and the girl show’s people whom of which need the help. I think this was the best way to showcase this as the dog draws most people in as they are usually are trustworthy and easily approached. I then sewed on heart’s to show that the professional help fulfils it’s purpose. You start to appreciate life more and notice all the people around you want to help you help yourself. You realise you are not in this alone and you matter more than you know to your loved ones. When making this I had the same problem with the searchers as I did with family. This wasn’t as bad to sort out as the black ground wasn’t as dark colour as family was. To fix this image I had to smooth out the screacher with plane paper. This technique worked really well to outline the purpose of the image. I really liked how I did my image came out in the end as it conveys exactly what I needed to express to the audience
Yourself: lastly, I wanted to do a piece about “yourself” to try and convey to the audience that you can be your own guardian angel. This includes regularly trying out the techniques given by your therapists or councillors such as safe place, going to therapy/counselling. This is meant to show the audience power they have to fight through mental heath disorders. To create this meaning it was difficult to think about at first, but after i came up with ideas and explored the process of narrowing down, I ended up with a beautiful photo of my sister. This photo was her surrounded by flowers in a milk bath of Which is meant to show safe place and the audience seeing themselves in that place. The bath is used to signify peace, relaxation and security. The flowers show peace, harmony and a way out from the bad thought that could enter your mind. I added more flowers onto the image to highlight these feelings. I also it made it very aesthetically pleasing and brought the photo to life using sewing techniques on the butterfly to show the guardian angel wings of which the person is developing for themselves. When making this I had the some problem as I had with my other final photo’s ( scratches). As I did with my therapy pet photo, I got a peace of plain paper and rubbed it into the image which smooths out the scratches. This worked really well and I ended up with another beautiful photo to showcase my message.
In conclusion, I really liked how all of my photo trued out and I think they complement each other. By this I mean they all feature vibrant colours and sewing witch aesthetically draw the selection together. Also the meaning link by trying to send a positive message to my audience. I really liked the idea of the photos and adding grounding techniques into the photo (sewing) witch worked amazingly. I think that it was very successful and it was by one of by best work out of the hole of the course.
Once lock down is over, I’m going to put the photos in a frame and take out the glass so people can feel the techniques of the stitching. Then I’m going to give my image’s to a charity called IMARA that helps people with mental heath disorders and there family’s as well so the images can hopefully attract people to them so they can think about the meaning.
