MCU Timeline: Iron Man. Part 2 (Back home)
Part 1.
This part is a little out of order because I haven't yet covered the 3 months Tony spent in Afghanistan. But I felt it necessary to first find out when he returned to the States and explain the difference in the calendars of our reality and the MCU.
Tumblr media
This is the screen with the Mad Money recording that Pepper was watching the day she changed Tony's reactor. It says May 4, 2008 10 am PDT. It wasn't the day Tony came home, but at least the next day. Or most people assume it's the next day. In fact, Tony returned home on:
May 2, 2008
~12:30 - Tony arrives on Edwards Air Force Base.
~15:30 - Tony announces he is shutting down weapons production at SI (the drive from Edwards AFB to SI HQ is approximately 2.5 hours, add a stop at Burger King. Plus, the journalists needed time to gather at SI).
Tumblr media
~20:00 - Tony is finally in his Malibu mansion (it's already dark outside. He spent a few hours at SI HQ and then drove 1.5 hours home). He scans his body and the arc reactor and starts working on a new version.
Calendar issue:
Tumblr media
Here you can see the date - Thursday the 16th (2008). In our universe, May 16, 2008 was Friday. It is not the only time in the movie in which the dates and days of the week do not correspond to ours. For the timeline to work properly, we have to use the difference and remember to move the dates back one day (Fri to Thu, Sat to Fri, etc).
Why it was not May 3?
May 2, 2008 - Thursday in the MCU.
May 3, 2008 - Friday.
May 4, 2008 - Saturday.
US Stock market hours: 9:30-4:00 pm EST/6:30-1:30 pm PDT (Mon-Fri, closed on weekends).
Mad Money aired at 6 pm EST from Mon to Fri, with reruns at 4 am EST/1 am PDT on Saturday.
Stock market: Tony gave his press conference at around 3 pm PDT (which is 6 pm EST). The US stock market was already closed. It needed at least another day to react to Tony's announcement and drop SI's points. So, it happened the next day - May 3 (Friday).
Mad Money: Pepper was watching a recording of the new episode of Mad Money when SI stock was already falling (bottom of the screen). The episode couldn't have been recorded the day Tony arrived, and it couldn't have been filmed the day Pepper watched it (it's Saturday 10 am PDT/1 pm EST). This happened in the interim, on May 3, after stock marked dropped SI shares (Mad Money's slot is 6 pm EST). Since May 4th falls on a Saturday in the MCU, Pepper may have been watching the recording of the rerun that aired at 4 am EST (1 am PDT), which she missed because she was sleeping.
Reactor and rest: Tony needed time to build a new reactor. This means getting all the components, designing and manufacturing the thing. He also obviously had time to rest, because he looks much better than on the day of his arrival, and not as if he had not slept all night working.

love that movie civil war for the way it Nails the clash between people’s external reads on tony vs The Truth
- backstage MIT people ready to kiss tony’s ass like he wants a fanfare and parades in his honor when really he’s looking for random excuses to ditch the adulation and leave through the back door - mrs spencer thinking tony won’t give a shit about her son when in reality her struggle becomes a key factor pushing him to the accords - steve assuming pepper was pregnant, like this guy heads off into the horizon and people assume happiness and then tony’s pretty much like “actually no i am Miserable” in not so many words - “you alright?” “always,” tony answers, fucking literally clutching his own chest after almost non-successfully talking ross out of approaching steve with a killing squad - scott lang like “this is your conscience, we don’t talk a lot these days” when in the beginning of the movie tony literally has an “it helps ease my conscience” line i’m just fuckinG - natasha like “are you incapable of letting go of your ego for one god damn second” literally 1 milisecond before pointing out herself that ross & co practically have tony on a leash and he literally spent the entire movie begging - tony being like “i was wrong” and sam, who presumably barely ever talked to tony responding like “that’s a first” when he clearly doesn’t hold steve to the same “openly admitting i’m wrong” requirements and like lmao tony was actually The First to say “i was wrong” in the movie and like literally his first scene has him standing in front of an audience like “have a live sneak peak of a MOMENT I REGRET”
bonus points for doing that without compromising the characterization of the IM1 guy who came out of the cave ready to make OPEN HONEST AND PUBLIC AMENDS the guy whose first “back from captivity” press conference speech starts with an honest and personal comment about his incomplete relationship with his father, and moves on to an admission of guilt. the guy who went up in front of journalists and said he wasn’t the hero type because of all his character defects, this guy, My Guy, the guy who has a deleted (WHY) line about how reputations stick with you and he was never entirely comfortable with his, My Guy, My Tony Stark, is finally Back, complete with the tragic Struggles of a reputation he can’t free himself from even though he will Fucking tell you In Person, with minimal prompting, that his conscience is Heavy

About War and Peace
I’m going to tell you a story.
It started with two men. One was War, and another was Peace.
One was living in a peaceful environment. But his purpose in life was to fight. He started his way as a sickly little man, but he was always getting into fights, no matter how big and dangerous was the opponent, and despite the inability to win. He couldn’t stop, because he believed that if he gave up once, he would do it all his life.
A big war started and the man did everything he could to become a soldier and fight there. He lied and violated laws for the sake of his desire. He wasn’t thinking about consequences. He wasn’t thinking how he would endanger his fellow soldiers in fight, by being physically unfit, being unable to keep up with their pace, and refusing to obey orders if he doesn’t like them.
But he got lucky – he met a scientist who made him stronger than any other men. Now he became worthy of war. He got what he wanted – he fought many battles, defeated many powerful enemies, and reached glory as the greatest soldier who ever lived. But close was the end of the war, and peaceful life for our soldier. And in the last battle he saved the world, but despite it was unnecessary for him to give his life, he made a decision to die with the weapon of mass destruction that he destroyed.
Another man all his life lived in a military environment. His father left him a military industrial company to run, his friends were all connected to the armed forces. He was creating weapons and military equipment and was the best in his field. He thought that war – his purpose in life and peace would rob him of his purpose.
One day an old friend he trusted betrayed him. He tried to kill him using the weapons of the man’s own creation. A young soldier died in front of him, with a gesture of peace. But our man got lucky – a scientist saved his life and inspired him to create something better than a weapon. He realized that war was not his true purpose, but rather the purpose of his old friend that betrayed him.
So he made a decision to become a warrior. Not in the armed forces, but in his soul. He stopped selling weapons and created armor, to become strong enough to fight. He defeated the man who betrayed him, and almost gave his life for not letting the man create more unrest in the world. From then on, the man always carried the gesture of peace that the young soldier used before he died.
Time passed. The first man returned to life. Century changed, but not his purpose. He was asked to fight in a war again. So was the second man. They fought side by side against a common enemy and became a team.
In one of the wars they fought together, they met an enemy who showed them their greatest fears. One’s fear was War - death and destruction. His friends died, and he lived. He feared not to be able to save them. Another’s fear was Peace – he saw that war ended and he was called to go home. He was afraid that he will become useless without war, that peace would rob him of his purpose.
The one who feared War tried to find a solution on how to prevent it. He tried to convince the another that it was better to prevent war than to let it happen. But another man was not the right one to help him, because that goal was his own greatest fear. Their paths were separated.
But fate brought them together again to fight their last battle. And one finally  gave up War and accepted Peace, and another died for it.
