I guess it's lucky for us that he didn't. [I gave a slight nod before asking] What's up with that guy anyway? Is he always that tough and gruff, or was he just putting on a special show for your benefit? And mine too, I guess, since he was clearly trying to scare me away from having anything to do with you. [My way of asking if this guy is all bark and no bite, or if he really is a tight-fisted jerk who needed to tone it down a bit] That guy seriously needs to eat a Snickers or something. [I pointed out to convey that he needed to do something about his grumpiness. I thought to myself as Tamara agreed to get coffee together. Something made me question if her and I were about to be the worst thing that could happen to each other, but I pushed the feeling back. Telling myself that she seemed worth the risk] Sure. Sounds good. [Especially the part about it not being far. I didn't want to come off as a wimp, but my knee was really pissed at me for everything I was putting it through today. A fact I'd try to keep to myself since I was attempting to make a good impression with Tamara. I mean, the way I see it, upon first meeting me, I was the loser who was trying to steal a car and I didn't have the first clue as to how to actually do that. Then, just to make myself look even more like an ass, I got arrested for stealing that same car. I was already probably looking like the king of losers in her eyes, so adding a pussy limp from a knee injury to the equation definitely would convince her to walk away from me and never look back] Lead the way. [I said as I extended my hand forward a bit merely to gesture for her to lead the way. My hand immediately lowering to my side afterwards as the two of us starting in the direction she veered us toward]

Smart wit, the way I bounced around it prepared Tamara for the moves she made. A safety of a car was the only object she felt smart enough to lean on. Tamara was smart gifted even but it wasn’t until that day; the day she stole Lucy Chen’s car that she felt seen. She was scared of having to turn to another shelter, scared of her cousins not allowing her to bunk around. And that trashy ass car saved her life. Tamara remembered how Lucy treated her; the safe place to land. Tamara had never leaned on another person; she had school she grades to keep her afloat. She aimed to go to a good college; of course for right now community college was where she was at.Â
Lucy inspired her; believed in her, to be worthy of more. She never wanted to be a burden she never wanted to overstay the welcome. Four walls; her own bedroom it felt like luxury to her. The brunette never took it for granted. She went home to a few take out meals; to the gormany pasta dishes which was Lucy’s speciality. She looked forward to their movie nights once a week every Wednesday it was the one day Lucy fit in for her; between her work schedule, and her avoidance of feelings for a officer; it was the teasing I liked to egg on for Tim Bradford. I had to laugh to myself now. Tamara was in good hands, today was like any other. It was A thursday the female had her small backpack over her shoulders; a black skirt and a loose light blue top with her jacket keeping her warm. It was the streets she walked like the back of her hand. Tamara was minding her own business now when she noted a car theft if you could even call it thought.Â
The male was her age if not a year older. Short brown hair, he was on his knees as he attempted to break into a car; carthaft? A smirk rose to her lips; she recalled seeing him around the campus and she edged herself forward. A skip in her step now. Tamara was coy as she leaned herself against the dark blue car; a small one if you asked me. And she extended out a hand out with a air wedge, that she kept on handy she had to be carefully. “ You know you should be careful on who sees you, cops don’t play around in this area of town..” Not to mention she had Lucy on speed dial, she could call Lucy to give her the notice; but Tamara could handle it on her own. But if this guy was Shady as shit; she had her ins; her calls and Lucy would have her back.

I get it. Explains how you had so much pull back there. [I said with a slight shrug] Anyone else talk back to that jerk cop and they'd have been throw in a cell too. [In spite of my humorous tone, that was the truth. Only people with pull of some kind could get away with speaking to a cop the way Tamara spoke to that Bradford guy. Especially when it was like that cop was trying to prove he wore the biggest balls so to speak. At least that's the air he gave off with his words and attitude] Well, as long as he doesn't find out and throw me back in that cell, then I'm game. I mean, even if you did get me arrested, you don't seem all that bad. [Flashing her a teasing smirk] Wanna grab a coffee or something? [My initial plan was work, but given all this crap, I missed my shift, which would undeniably lead to me being fired, since my boss was looking for literally any excuse to fire me anyway. I guess me getting arrested today did the guy a favor. Now it would be on me to find another job... and a place to crash too, for that matter since my friend's bitch of a girlfriend told me in no uncertain terms that she didn't want me living there anymore. Hell, this day was just going from bad to worse]

[I jumped slightly when I unexpectedly heard my name. Why though, I didn't know. I mean, I had a feeling Tamara would go against that high and mighty cop's adamant instructions about us having no contact with one another. Even with the sense that she was the rebellious type, it still caught me briefly off guard when she said my name and then I felt her hand on my own] Hey... [Okay, not the most eloquent of responses but these were all strange terms happening today] Thanks... umm... for bailing me out back there. [I said before adding] I mean, technically me getting arrested was on you since you set me up, but either way, I'm grateful that you didn't just leave me there to rot. [My way of saying "thank you," even if that wasn't a phrase that came easily to me. I thought to myself as I instinctively glanced back. A part of me suspecting that cop Bradford would be waiting to catch us and then haul me back into that jail cell] You aren't afraid of being seen with me? Something tells me that Bradford guy is protective of you, so he probably won't be far... You sure you want to test his patience? [I wasn't someone who liked being told what to do, and I liked ultimatums even less. My point being, I only agreed to Bradford's condition for us to never see or speak to each other so I could get released from jail. Whatever happened after my release was mine and Tamara's business; not his]

[Bradford took his good, sweet time before he released me from here. I had a feeling he was purposely doing it. For one, he wanted to see me stew as long as he possibly could, but two, I think he was waiting to make sure Tamara got far away from this station in order to ensure we made no contact with each other from this point on. To be honest, I had a feeling I'd see her at some point either now or in the future. Maybe that was impulsive and presumptuous of me to expect that, but considering the knowing sort of look she gave me when she talked Bradford into my release, it seemed like we'd cross paths with one another again. I silently considered as I signed off on my release papers and then went to the desk to grab my personal belongings that had been collected. No surprise there was a voicemail there informing me that I had been fired for missing work together, as well as a text from my roommate letting me know his girlfriend wanted me out of their place, so I'd need to find another place to crash. Wow, this day was just going from bad to worse... I thought to myself with a sigh as I pushed the door open to the precinct and exited the building. A limp in my step given how much my knee was throbbing at this point as I started to hobbled in the general direction of my buddy's place. Sure, I had no idea where I'd go from here, but the first step was needing to get my stuff out of there before his bitch of a girlfriend threw it in the apartment building dumpster just to prove she was in control. My eyes rolling at the thought. What he saw in her I'd never understand. I silently considered as I rounded the corner and continued to limp toward their apartment]

[I shrugged in indifference as I heard Tamara promise that barking, high and mighty cop that she’d never see me again. Fair enough. It’s not like we were friends to begin with or anything. Just two strangers who got ourselves in a bad situation after she helped me “borrow” a car this morning. It was probably for the best anyway. Something told me having a friend like her in my life would just mean having a cop constantly looking over my shoulder. Now, I wasn’t a big guy or a criminal or anything like that, so I guess I didn’t really have anything to worry about, but regardless, I didn’t want or need some cop to be breathing down my neck basically waiting for me to screw up, so they could throw me behind bars again. I silently reminded myself in response to Tamara’s reply to the cop. Only in seeing her glance my way with a wink, I realized this was all just a ploy to get me out of jail. Say what she needed to say to get that cop to release me, and then we’d go from there… Truth was, I didn’t know what the plan was here and now. Like I said, this was a girl who had a bunch of cops watching her every move, so how were we going to be friends or whatever she was going for here. Not that it mattered. For now, I just wanted to get out of here. Grant it, I had no idea where I’d go once I left here, but I’d figure it out like I always did] “Fine. I’ll release you from here, but mark my words, you little punk, if I see you with Tamara again, I’ll only be too happy to throw your ass back in this cell… You hear me?” [The cop barked out at me; prompting me to exhale in annoyance before nodding curtly in reply] Sure. Whatever you say. [Crossing my fingers over my chest in a mocking form of the “scout’s honor.” I was never a scout, so this was basically me just being a smart ass right now] Can I go now? [I asked as the cop rolled his eyes then gave orders for another cop to unlock the tank. Once he did, Bradford gestured with his finger for me to go] “Get the hell out of here before I change my mind.” [I muttered a “gladly” under my breath as I exited the cell then started toward the desk to get my belongings that had been confiscated when I got arrested]

[I made a face hearing the grumpy cop's reply. Yeah, okay, "dad." Whatever. I thought with a scowl. Tempted to roll my eyes but I had a feeling if I did, this jerk would throw Tamara in a cell too. He seemed like the type who just wanted to be right for the sake of boosting his already healthy ego; even if it meant using Tamara and I to prove his worth. Idiot. I thought with building frustration at his threat. Truthfully, this should be an easy decision. I mean, I didn't even know this girl. She was a stranger to me up until this morning, so I should just say "yeah," to humor him enough to release me from here. I was just stubborn enough though not to do that] I don't really think that's your business or decision now, is it? Wouldn't that be up to Tamara and I? [I casually blurted it out in casual reply. If that meant my ass was staying in a cell longer, oh well. Hell, at least in here it prolonged the fact that my ass would be homeless before the day is out, so I'd have a roof over my head for now. Slight upside, I guess] Either way, Tamara and I just met this morning, so for all I know, she probably wants nothing more to do with me anyway, so you'd get your wish. The decision is hers though. [I added unapologetically. I wasn't going to have some high and mighty cop dictate who I could and couldn't hang out just because we made one bad decision. I made a stupid decision out of desperation, but that didn't make me a big guy overall]

Come on, man, she was just trying to help me. I busted up my knee and knew I couldn't walk that far to get to work. Missing work isn't an option for a nobody loser like me. I know full well that if I didn't get to work, they'd fire me without blinking. I can't afford to be out of a job. I'll end up on the streets if I can't pay my rent, so desperate times and all of that. [I tried to explain. Not that the whole work conversation mattered though since I knew I was out of a job already given that I was sitting in a cell as we speak instead of being at work. That's my luck though, so I shouldn't be surprise. I briefly thought with a hushed scoff before I continued to try and reason with the grumpy cop] This is on me, not her. The last thing she'd want to do was piss you or Lucy off... She saw me in a bind and after trying to talk me out of trying to borrow the car, I ultimately convinced her to help me out. For the record, after I got dropped off at work, we planned to return the car to where we found it. [Not sure if I was helping either one of our cases, but I was trying here. Truthfully, my gut told me to just keep my mouth shut and avoid getting my ass in more trouble than I was already in, but regardless, I could see that cop, Tim I think I heard Tamara or someone call him, getting madder at Tamara by the second, which didn't feel right. This whole shit show was on me, not her, so if anyone should be taking the fall for it, it's me. Besides, I'll end up homeless any day now anyway, so at least in jail, I'll have a bed. You know, small upside and all of that, I guess]

[I could have easily threw Tamara under the bus. It was her who hotwired the car here, and drove too, for that matter, before she bailed on me. I didn't though. Of course I argued that it would be pointless to do so. I mean, they'd never buy my response anyway, so why bother trying? Beyond that though, I guess you could say my moral compass was pointing north, as the saying goes, because even on the off chance that they did believe me, I didn't want to get her in trouble. Weird. She was a total stranger to me and I was trying to have her back now. Without a word I let them throw me into the back of the cop car and before I knew it we were arriving at the police station. So much for today turning out okay. I thought with frustration as they took me to booking and prepared to print me] "Hold still. If you so much as flinch, you'll regret it." [The female cop barked out and I did what I was told. Sure, my every instinct was to fight it, but I sure as hell didn't need more trouble for myself, so I forced myself to relax and do what I was told] Noted. [I muttered out as they started to fingerprint me in preparation to throw me in a cell. Talk about something completely out of left field though, I found myself look up in shock as I saw Tamara approach; declaring that she was the one who stole the car, not me] Don't. It's fine. [I muttered out in response. Yeah, it was true what she was saying now, but she had more to lose than I did. Besides, the stealing the car thing was my idea anyway. She just helped me do it since I was too much of a loser to figure it out on my own. Either way, she seemed like the type of girl who didn't back down when she made up her mind about something, so I had a feeling no matter what I'd say, she'd do what she wanted anyway. With that thought in mind, I decided just to roll with it; let the chips fall where they may, as the saying goes]

[Great. I thought with an eye roll as she threw my words back at me, shut off the stolen car, and then she left the car] Are you freaking kidding me? Damn it. [I muttered under my breath as I got out of the car. Knowing I was a sitting duck here. The thought no sooner crossing my mind when I saw two cops approaching me. I knew there was no way I could outrun them with my injured knee, and even if I tried, it would just get me in more trouble, so why bother? Instead I just gave up. Pissed off as I slowly lifted both hands into the air as a form of surrender] "Are you aware that this car was reported stolen?" [The woman asked] No, I didn't know about the report. [I muttered out in defense as the male cop told me to turn around and put my hands down flat on the trunk door of the stolen car. Not wanting anymore trouble than I was already in, I did exactly as he asked] "Don't get flip with us, son." [The male cop added in response to my comment. I wasn't trying to be flip. I was telling the truth when they asked me if I knew it was reported. I stole it, yes, but I didn't know about the report. What the hell was flip about that? I thought with added frustrated as they asked for my license] It's in my wallet which is in my back pocket... Can I grab it or are you going to taser me if I try? [It felt like a fair question. I was told to do it slowly which I did and handed the female cop the license] "You're not the owner of this car, are you?" [I shook my head no] No, but something tells me you knew that the second you approached me. [I shot back which apparently pissed them off since next thing I knew I was being put in cuffs, then shoved into the back of a police car. So much for me getting to work today. At this rate I'd be stuck in jail for the entire duration of whatever sentencing I end up with since I sure as hell didn't have bail money. What was I going to do though? I was a loser. I had nobody and nothing, so I could probably just expect to rot in jail for the unforeseeable future. At least once I got to jail I could request a pro-bono lawyer who might be able to get me out of this, but time would tell on that. I thought to myself as I sat cuffed in the back of the cop car while the two cops called in the stolen car over the walkie-talkie. Boy, that chick new what she was doing when she stopped the car where she did and then she ran like hell to get away. She probably knew her cop friends would be there ready to arrest me and take me away]

Thanks... I think. [I aired out dryly as I got into the passenger's seat of the car we were stealing. I guess I should be grateful that this girl was offering to help me, but at the moment, her cockiness was just getting on my nerves. She was a bit of a know-it-all pain in the ass. Bragging about being friends with cops. Bragging about being able to break into cars. I had to wonder what she'd be bragging about next as she drove me to the bar that I worked at] Great. Thanks for your concern. [I added sarcastically. Like she'd care if I did end up in a ditch somewhere] You act like I'm completely helpless. I have an injured knee, yeah, but I'm not going to end up in a ditch. Believe it or not, I can handle myself. [Why did I feel the need to defend myself with this girl. The way I saw it, I'd probably never see her again after she left me at the bar for work] Anyway, the bar is on the corner of Sunset and West Adams. [I blurted out. Figuring the sooner I told her the destination, the sooner she could drop me off, and the two of us could go our separate ways]

[My brows furrowed and I just shot her a look to say, "What the hell" in response to her strangers comment. This chick made no sense] So let me get this straight, you're offering to drive the car you just helped me to break into, but you don't get in cars with strangers...? Am I hanging on via the roof then, or how are you going to work that one out? [I asked with a hint of dry humor, even if this wasn't exactly a humorous moment] I mean, if that's the case, then I'd probably be better off just walking there myself because I don't plan to die or be hospitalized today. [Was that another feeble attempt to crack a joke? Eh, I don't know. At this point I guess it was just coming naturally since I wasn't really in the mood to be joking around] Just out of curiosity though, where were you heading? For all we know, we're going in opposite directions anyway, so sharing the car wouldn't make much sense. [I eventually added. Knowing that question could clear all of this up since "stranger danger" was apparently an issue for her. Even harmless strangers which I'd like to think I was]

[My brows furrowed in consideration as I listened to Tamara's explanation. As much as I wanted to argue with her... You know, in a pathetic effort to save what little was left of my pride, my urge to stay out of a jail cell prompted me to keep my mouth shut. I mean yeah, I didn't like coming across as a worthless, dimwitted piece of crap, nor did I like giving off the impression that I was some desperate loser either, but I didn't have bail money, so I just needed to grin and bare it now. I silently told myself as I watched her effortlessly open the car door for me. In hearing her question about hot wiring the car though, I scoffed in response] I'm not a total moron... I can hot wire a car. [I blurted out confidently as I limped toward the car. It had been years since the last time I hot wired a car, and at that point in history, I had someone walking me through the procedure, so I hoped this was like a "riding a bike" type of memory. I thought to myself with a sense of hope as I revealed the necessary wires; rubbing them together until I heard the car start up] Oh, thank God... [I muttered under my breath. Knowing full well that I already looked like an idiot to this girl, so I didn't want to seem completely hopeless by needing her to hot wire the car for me too] So, anyway.... You know, thanks for your help... [I murmured out awkwardly. I felt I owed her more than a thanks, but I was also feeling incredibly dumb right about now, so I figured the less words the better] Need a lift anywhere? I can drop you off somewhere on my way to work, if you want. [No, I wasn't hitting on her now... Not even close since that was the last thing on my mind, at the moment, but she did help me, so it would be rude of me to not at least offer]

[My brows furrowed in confusion and reluctance when I heard the girl's response. One minute she was going to call the cops on me, and in the next she was offering to help me. Was she high? What was her motive now? I couldn't help but to wonder if this was some kind of test... One that would ultimately end up with me being tossed into jail by her so called "friends who were cops."] You're going to help me steal a car? I thought you had friends who were cops... Why the sudden change in your mind about breaking the law? [I guess my roundabout way of getting feelers out to see if this was some kind of trick. Sure, I heard her say something about stealing a car in the past and it being the best decision she ever made. That made zero sense to me, but whatever, I guess. Either way, I held the screwdriver out toward her to take. I figured I'd see what she was actually planning to do now. If she used the screwdriver to open the car and actually hot wired it, then maybe she wasn't full of crap now] So, if stealing cars apparently isn't your thing anymore, and you're allegedly on the up and up, why are you willing to help me steal one now? [I guess still trying to feel out her motives because something wasn't adding up in her sudden offer to help me now]

[I felt like a total ass right now. All those years of watching my friends break into cars while I was the lookout definitely weren't paying off for me now. Here I wanted to keep my hands clean. I was admittedly regretting that decision now though. I thought with an eye roll as I heard the overly confident female speaking. Wow, she sure thought highly of herself, didn't she? Not only was she allegedly friends with cops who could come and arrest me with one phone call from her, but she could also help me steal a car. I flashed her a skeptical look and furrowed my brow as I spoke. Honestly, what the hell did I have to lose now? I silently told myself as I responded] So, let me get this straight... You are enough on the right side of the law that you have the cops on speed dial, but not enough on the right side of law that you'd actually help me steal a car right now? [I asked with a slight smirk of amusement as I lowered my screwdriver; deciding to temporarily give up on breaking into this car] Look, I don't know what you're waiting to hear from me in order to keep you from calling your "cop friends." I'm not sure if you're hoping I'll beg or give you some sob story to play at some bullshit heartstrings, but let's be clear, that won't be happening. What I will give you is the truth though. [I started to say in a calm tone as I took a single step back, so I could better see the female who was leaned back against the car I had been trying to steal] Plain and simple, I'm just trying to get to work, and it's too far to walk at the moment. [I said as I gave a nod toward my busted up knee. Not that the girl would know what me gesturing toward my knee would have to do with it, but it is what it is] If I miss work, I'll get fired, and then I can't pay the buddy I'm staying with rent. I've been dealt a shitty enough hand lately, so ending up on the street because his bitch of a girlfriend is already looking for any reason to kick me out doesn't sound at all appealing to me. [Exhaling audibly before adding] Look, believe me or don't, but I'm not some loser who steals cars. Clearly. [I said with a roll of my eyes given she witnessed my failed attempt to steal this one, so obviously I didn't know what I was doing] Desperate times and all that though, you know? [I aired out with a shrug. Not knowing what more to say, so maybe I'd be better off just walking away before she calls her cop friends. I didn't need to end up in jail on top of everything else. With that thought in mind, I tossed my hands up into the air in a brief sign of defeat before I turned to walk away] Forget it. [I muttered out under my breath as I proceeded to slowly limp away. Not knowing where I'd go or what the hell I was going to do to get to work, but none of that would matter if this girl had me tossed in jail]

[My life was far from glamorous. My mom died when I was a kid, and hell, I never even knew my father. I was bounced from foster home to foster home until I eventually aged out of the system. This had an upside in a way since it meant no more shitty, abusive foster homes, but on the flipside, it also meant no more home either, which kinda sucked. I did have a buddy from high school who let me crash on his couch from time to time, but that wasn't ideal either given his girlfriend was always there, and well, she was a bit of a bitch, so I avoided her as much as possible. With that thought in mind, I spent my days at the local college crashing a few appealing courses in an effort to gain a bit of education and also avoid my buddy's apartment for as long as possible. Fortunately for me, the college classes were so large, the professors were none the wiser that I was attending their courses without paying. Regardless I spent my days on the college campus and then a few of nights a week I worked at a bar. I didn't make much money, but at least it was enough to take care of the bare necessities. Problem was, last night at work some drunk idiot knocked me down and I screwed up my knee as a result. Ordinarily I'd just take a few days off and rest the injury, but considering I couldn't afford to miss work, and it was too far to walk on this knee, I knew I had to figure out something. Something, in this case, being car theft. Never done that before. Had buddies who knew how to do it, and I witnessed it done plenty of times, but it was them who did it while I just worked as their look out. Either way, I was on my own giving it my best shot today. I've gotta say, I was failing miserably at my first attempt, which was pretty embarrassing, to say the least] Come on, Justin. Get the damn door open. [I mumbled under my breath but found my concentration broken when I heard a female voice ringing out too close for comfort. My eyes rolled in response] Is this your car? If not, mind your own damn business. [I aired out in reply as I continued trying to pry open the car door with my tools. Clearly I was awful at this. Maybe I should have taken more time to actually practice this all those years ago instead of just being the look out]

A kid her age; stealing a car; now that’s a case the brunette was capable of handing dirty hands and all.Â
