Michael Levin. A hero in heaven. A lone soldier from the US who fell in love with Israel, joined the paratroopers and was killed in action in Lebanon. His parents didn't know who will come to the funeral because all of their family is in America. 30,000 Israelis showed up. Unbelievable story. We remember you and your friends Michael. English follow Hebrew. אחד המאפיינים הבולטים ביותר של היהדות זה הציווי לזכור. לזכור ולא לשכוח. לזכור את המצוות הרבות, לזכור את בני המשפחה שנפטרו ולזכור את האויבים הרבים של עם ישראל: פרעה, עמלק, עמי כנען, בבל, פרס, יוון, רומא ועוד רבים אחרים לרבות הנאצים במלחמת העולם השניה. לכל אדם יש שני שני אתגרים חשובים. לשרוד ולנסות לחיות טוב ובאותו זמן לטפח את הזהות העצמית שלו, לזכור מי הוא. לאורך כל ההיסטוריה היהודית היו ניסיונות לפגוע בעם ישראל על ידי חיסול פיזי או על ידי טשטוש ומחיקת הזהות, כלומר השכחתה. מול שני האתגרים האלו העם היהודי עמד וכיום זה העם העתיק ביותר בעולם. האתגרים עדיין קיימים ובימי הזיכרון חשוב להרהר בהם כל אחד ברמה האישית וכולנו יחד ברמה הלאומית. יהי זכר הנספים ברוך. One of the most defining characteristics of Judaism is the commandment to remember. to remember and not to forget. To remember the many Mitzvahs of the Jewish law, to remember the deceased family members and to remember the many enemies of the people of Israel: Pharaoh, Amalek, Canaanite nations, Babylon, Persia, Greece, Rome and many others including the Nazis during World War II. Each person has two important challenges. Survive and try to live well and at the same time nurture his own identity, to remember who he is. Throughout Jewish history there have been attempts to harm the Jewish people by physical annihilation or by blurring and erasing their identity. Facing these two challenges, the Jewish people is still standing and today it is the oldest people in the world.
