Take a look at our new podcast: Above the Garage - a Nick and June The Handmaids Tale Podcast!

We are very excited to announce our new project, which will be a combination of topical episodes about the show (and often with an emphasis on our favorite couple) and an episode by episode rewatch, for both long-time and brand new fans to get ready for Season 5 next year! The first half of the rewatches will be spoiler free, the second half an analysis of the episode in relation to the show to date!

◼️ By the way, “we” are just a group of THT fans from nearly every continent across the world. During the pandemic, we discovered a passion for talking all things THT, and especially Nick & June. There are already other The Handmaid's Tale podcasts of course, and they're amazing, and you definitely should listen to them, like we do. The difference between theirs and ours is that we felt that maybe they were more suspicious about the character of Nick Blaine from the outset than we were. Which produces a very different viewing experience and we thought there was space to discuss it from our perspective.

◼️ For us, Nick is clearly a very good hearted guy, in a terrible situation. But we never doubted his motivations, and we were able to really focus on enjoying the relationship between them.

◼️ So… that's how “Above the Garage” was born. We hope you join in!

Osblaine Week Day 5: Intimacy

This was post was difficult for me to write because I didn’t know where to begin considering how many forms of intimacy Nick and June share with each other and the many different things I could say about intimacy as it pertains to Nick and June just in general. But then I thought once again about humour and the role their jokes play in establishing intimacy between the two of them. 

I do believe that there had probably always been a curiosity/attraction between the two of them from a distance but it isn’t until Nick cracks the joke about tuna 

that a tangible connection is forged between them. It is important to note that in her interior monologue June, a few seconds earlier, had been wry and ironic

and then Nick makes a joke out loud

and she goes from simply explaining who he is i.e. he’s a driver, low status, hasn’t even been issued a woman, to wondering if he’s lonely, which adds another layer of humanity to him. 

The next scene they have together further establishes their connection as June takes it upon herself to play a prank on him 

as I believe a kind of test to see how he responds and whether or not he can be an ally of sorts, but it’s also a private joke, a secret between them because Rita has no idea that Nick doesn’t like tuna, and now noting his sense of humour, the two of them share something that neither of them share with anyone else in the house 

and quickly, humour becomes a way for Nick and June to familiarize themselves with each other in particularly tense situations

which then forges a space that allows for other types of intimacy to occur between them 

because of the safety and familiarity that cracking a joke

affords them

it’s such a prevalent but subtly layered form of intimacy between them because it begets even more intimacy.

Osblaine Week Day 4 Parallels

When June says “I love you” to Nick on the bridge, she says it as she touches her nose to him.

And just for kicks she’s also touching his face with her nose the first time she says I love you.

Therefore, in summary, I conclude that the nose nudge in Episode 9 is a very clear “I love you” 🥰

Osblaine Week Day 4 - Parallels

This show has its flaws, but one thing I truly love about it is that there are so many incredible parallels. I feel like S4 had the most we’ve seen, and I hope they keep going with it in S5.

There are so many amazing parallels I could’ve picked, but these are some that I just love:

In S2E2, Nick is angry with June for being stubborn. Her stubbornness gets her into trouble, but he really does love that quality of hers. It’s who she is, and he’ll never interfere with that. In S4E9 he’s proud that his daughter turned out to be stubborn like her mom. Nick loves strong women 🥰

I love this parallel of June running to Nick to kiss him. Every reunion of theirs is so full of longing and love. He’s just as desperate to be reunited as she is, and his arms and lips are ready for her 😍

Osblaine Week Day 3: parenthood

So of course it's obvious that June is a big part of this little family as well and I feel a little bad to have her not included in this drawing (you need to imagine that she made this photo of them with her smartphone when she went to meet him in 4x9 though and that she's holding this photo dear and shows it to Holly every single day before putting her to bed), but the impact of becoming a parent just hits on a different level for Nick.

When June told him she's pregnant, it completely changed his view on taking risks despite the danger he's putting himself in. He's acting like a father the instant he knows of the baby's existence, trying everything he can to protect and save them from a life in Gilead...not even caring if he'll ever see his baby.

And it breaks my heart every time knowing that this man has so much love to give but is just not allowed to do so.

Eden and June are right, Nick would be a great dad and I'm manifesting with this drawing that he'll get to hold Holly again...he just deserves this little peace of mind.

Osblaine Week Day 2: missing moments

When I was working on this piece there's been this lingering thought in the back of my head of when and where this could be set?

And as beautiful as their reunions in S4 were we still had to miss out on a steamy one.

Therefore I imagined this to be their meeting to plan Fred's demise and talk some more Hannah stuff too. Obviously this time Holly wasn't present and they could finally give in to their passion for each other.

So this is very much a missing moment and a moment we miss at the same time, because it's already way too long since we got some sexy action between them.

Osblaine Week Day 2: Fanfiction/Missing Moments

Nick is suffering guilt and anguish after Eden’s death in Season Two, Episode 12. This short piece is an exploration of his mental state shortly after this traumatic event, and includes some comfort from June. This will hopefully be kicking off my series of various “missing scenes” from The Handmaid’s Tale - aka, scenes I wish had happened in the show.

OSBLAINE WEEK 2021 ↳ day 1: moment that made you ship

I want him. Shit. I wish it was more complicated, I wish there was some poetry to it. But there’s just hunger. I’d forgotten this feeling, left it for dead. But my body remembers. What did they used to say, it’s like riding a bicycle? That’s right. God, I just want to climb on him and start pedalling. Luke would understand, I think. This wanting. I hope he would at least. Forgive me Luke for I am dripping.

Day 2 Lyrics

I have two obsessions in my life. One is the relationship of June Osbourne and Nick Blaine in The Handmaid's Tale and the other is the music of Dermot Kennedy. I found both at the same time. 2018. Dermot has helped me understand the complexities and the simpleness of love. This is his lyrics incorporated into the beauty of Nick and June's story.

From the song "Without Fear". It encapsulates this love. Sometimes they don't know if there is gonna be another day. They take the now. And leading with your heart is the most empowering thing you can ever do.

From the song "Lost". The whole song for me screams Osblaine but this line kills me. We can never choose when we die nor can we chose who we love. And as much as June and Nick might try to move on from one another, its impossible. They're ingrained in each other's souls.

From the song "For Island Fires and Family". A reverie is a "state of being lost in one's thoughts and dreams".. June is Nick's permanent reverie. Being a family with June and Holly is Nick Blaine's dream. He has expressed that often enough. They are his moon and stars.

From the song "Dancing Under Red Skies" This song is a masterpiece. It's about admitting the love that you have is all you ever wanted and needed. That the person has spoken to your heart and you are forever changed as a result.

From the song "Lost" again. A burning question that rages through us all when it comes to love. Is this the person I'm supposed to be with? Will we last forever? Will we hurt each other? Can we be together?

Nick and June are a triumph in my opinion. A love that started and lasted through an evil world where adversity faced them all the time. But love conquers all and they have proved this time and time again. ❤ And these lyrics put that into perspective.

Osblaineweek 2021, Day 1: The Moment I Started Shipping Them

In the traditional sense I shipped them from the beginning. I thought he was cute, clearly liked her and that they’d probably have sex. So I was like “Cool, why not?”

I love it how she's clearly checking him out in their first scene together, but is obviously too scared to do it openly. They're not exactly friends, but have noticed each other in the sexual/romantic sense and she's not afraid of him, so he must've been nice to her even before. We don't know much of her life in Gilead at this point, except that it's effin terrible. And yet this scene proved to me that June wasn't totally dead inside, that some normal parts of her psyche were still alive and well and functioning. I think I actually laughed a little at how cliched the scene was, because hey, something totally normal is happening in this awful place! It was both jarring and really wonderful at the same time.

Contrary to what many others apparently thought, I never believed Nick had any ulterior motives for wanting a relationship with June, or that he was somehow tricking her or using her for nefarious purposes. In fact, I always thought he didn’t believe in Gilead and that if he was truly up to something bad, he had sooo many opportunities to hurt June, and he didn’t take any of them! He could’ve had her killed or at least sent to the Colonies multiple times, but nothing happened.

By the time he broke up with her in ep 8, I figured he was in love with her and and that she was on her way to falling for him as well despite still fondly remembering her marriage. I still wasn’t sure whether they were one of the biggest love stories on TV or just a temporary ship.

All that changed in episode 10, when he was so moved by the news of her pregnancy that he took a risk and showed his feelings in a place where they could’ve been seen (and were, by Serena). Before that, I wondered if June would be able to develop a positive relationship with the baby she was carrying, but I had no doubts after this. This is when they became a family, and when I think she realized that she truly had feelings for him. Before that she wanted to think he was only a means to an end for her.
