Is Coronavirus spreading more rapidly in cold weather?
With the start of summer a few months back, everyone was relieved that the weather will slow the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. There have been hints from lab experiments that increased temperature and humidity may reduce the viability of SARS-CoV-2. Meanwhile, other coronaviruses that cause less severe diseases, such as the common cold, do spread more slowly among people during the summer.
In the new study, the researchers developed a mathematical model to simulate how seasonal changes in temperature might influence the trajectory of COVID-19 in cities around the world. Of course, because the virus emerged on the scene only recently, we don’t know very much about how it will respond to warming conditions. So, the researchers ran three different scenarios based on what’s known about the role of climate in the spread of other viruses, including two coronaviruses, called OC43 and HKU1,that are known to cause common colds in people.
In fact, the scientists found that, even if one assumes that SARS-CoV-2 is as sensitive to climate as other seasonal viruses, summer heat still would not be enough of a mitigator right now to slow its initial, rapid spread through the human population. That’s also clear from the rapid spread of COVID-19 that’s currently occurring in Brazil, Ecuador, and some other tropical nations.
The scientific community has yet to determine the exact relationship between seasonal change and the spread of COVID-19 in different parts of the world. The executive director of the World Health Organization’s Health Emergencies Program said last month it was unclear how the arrival of winter in the Southern Hemisphere would affect the situation there. Still, some experts say it’s reasonable to expect at least some seasonal fluctuation. So, even as Australia’s response to the pandemic has largely been deemed a success, challenges were anticipated as winter loomed.
It has been widely noted that the Spanish flu pandemic surged during the colder months of 1918 and 1919, which some have seen as an indication of what’s in store with COVID-19. It is also yet another reason experts say comprehensive testing and contact tracing will be essential until a vaccine can be developed.
Dr Gordan Lauc, professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Zagreb and honorary visiting professor at King’s College London, is senior author of the study.
He said: “Our findings point to a role for seasonality in the transmission and severity of COVID-19, and also argue for increased humidity and hydration as a way to combat the virus.
“This paints a grim picture for the next winter in Europe when more severe ‘winter’ COVID-19 is expected to return – something we are currently observing in the southern hemisphere.”
Flu surges in winter for three reasons. First, the virus is more stable in cold, dry conditions with low levels of ultraviolet light. Second, people spend more time together indoors, which facilitates viral spread. Third, our immune systems may be weakened due to the mild vitamin D deficiency a lack of sunlight can cause.

We all dream of a perfect body and healthy lifestyle. There are some easy daily exercises which we have to do every morning in order to have that perfect body and healthy lifestyle. But before doing all these exercises the first thing we have to do is to sacrifice our lazy daily routine and get up early in the morning; we all are familiar with the famous quote “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.”
These exercises are also helpful in providing enough strength to the body for its normal functioning. After all the long-term health of our body is in our hands and it entirely depends on us how we maintain it. Below given are the various benefits of doing these five exercises in the morning:
1.         Help you control your weight
2.         Reduce your risk of heart disease
3.         Help your body in managing sugar levels
5 Exercises you should do everyday in the morning:
1.         Squats
2.         Lunges
3.         Push-ups
4.         Pull-ups
5.         Rotation
1. Squats:  
Squats are simple exercise but it can be done in various forms. It also has different levels; if you are a beginner you should start doing simple squats. Below are given steps on how to do squats:
a.         Start with your feet hip distance apart.
b.         Keeping your knees over your ankles, bend your knees. Try to move down as you are trying to sit on a chair.
c.         Your knees and lower leg should form a 90 degree angle (if you can’t get to 90 degrees without compromising your form that’s OK).
d.         Make sure your knees do not go over your toes.
e.         Raise up and start again
f.          Do 10 reps, three sets, two to three times a week.
2. Lunges:
A Lunge refers to a position of a human body where one leg is positioned forward with knee bent and foot flat on the ground while the other leg is positioned behind. Given below are the steps on how to do lunges:
a.         The working should be forward; the back leg should be hip distance apart in a split stance.
b.         Bend your knees keeping the front knee over the ankles making the 90 degree angle.
c.         Rise up and start again.
d.         Do 10 reps, three sets, two to three times a week.
3. Push-ups:
Push-ups are the most basic exercise which can be performed by anyone and this exercise also targets our various muscles. Below are given steps on how to do simple push ups
a.         Start with a basic plank, hands slightly wider than your shoulder and your palms on floor
b.         Keep your back straight and keep your whole body in a straight line
c.         Slowly bend your elbows and bring your chest closer to the floor
d.         Push against the floor and straighten your arms
e.         Do 10 reps, three sets, two to three times a week.
4. Pull-ups:  
Pull-ups are one of those exercises that look like a piece of cake but it isn’t as we have to lift our whole body weight. Below are given steps on how to do proper pull-ups:
a.         Stand  under the bar. Place your palms on the bar and activate your core
b.         Pull yourself up, so that your chin reaches the bar
c.         Slowly lower yourself down, so that your arms are straight. Your feet does not touch the ground or bench
d.         Start with five reps and two sets at one time.
5. Rotation:
Every human activity or sport requires some kind of rotation.
a.         Start tall with good alignment hold something in your hand
b.         Try to move the object from one side to another from left to right
c.         Do 10 reps, three sets, two to three times a week.
These form the basis of any good exercise program and your dream of a perfect fit body and having a healthy lifestyle can come true with these five exercises.
