I got my (now 18-year-old) daughter into Ao3 back in 2021. I taught her she should always comment - even if the fic looks old or abandoned or whatever. She did.

Well - she got this email this morning:

The fic was written in 2014 and essentially abandoned.

Bethy read and reviewed in 2021 (and was actually the only person who had commented at all).

Today in 2025 - the final chapter was posted by the author and this was her reply to Bethy’s comment.

Feature ideas I have to make tumblr worse

Unfollow notifications. When someone unfollows you, you receive a notification about it. The notification includes the last post of yours that the unfollower saw so you know what the final straw was.

If the unfollower was a mutual then this notification comes with stats about how long you were mutuals and a list of comutuals who have to pick sides in the divorce. The comutuals receive this notification too

Ability to edit other people's replies.

Ability to edit other people's blog themes.

The ability to gift debuffs like those cooking competition shows. Pay $15 to make someone you hate only be allowed to post 20 times a day. Pay $30 and they can only make posts out of the set of pre-approved family-friendly message options like the Webkinz chatroom.

Were you around when Karlie's wedding happened? What was your mood about Kaylor back then? Did you feel discouraged by it? I'm so annoyed by this Travis thing that I don't know how some of you guys lasted for so long, especially through that.

i think um, …i think it was hard for a lot of people (myself included) who at the time had allowed themselves to be convinced of the fact that karlie would never get engaged, and that when she did she it’s fine because she would never get married.

and i think there was a time where i would have gotten a slap on the wrist for not properly putting the words engaged and married in quotation marks, as if the sanctity of maintaining that one specific distinction was the only thing that mattered, when i feel like there was a huge elephant in the room in regards to communication that went unaddressed out of fear.

the mood was awful! it really was. it really was.

but then a lot of us made a lark of it and not everybody likes jokes but i found the levity that i needed and we moved forward. and while i’m guessing most of the people in the reblogs and likes of this heritage post have moved on from kaylor altogether at this point, those of us who have stayed found our ways to ourselves and our people and we’ve been able to stick it out in a variety of ways.

for me, it required a reworking of my worldview and discarding some core tenets that were holding me down. but once i did that and started listening more to myself and what i thought made sense and just embraced the absurdity, i found truths that worked for me and focused in on what i like and what i get out of this, and while it was a multi year process i found a way of engaging with all this that works for my life. and kaylor didn’t get sacrificed in the process.
