It’s been long enough since I worked at the hideously mismanaged nanotech startup that I’ve started romanticizing it. Y’know how Jon and Georgie were just absolutely woeful at communication judging by the Everything of 80-90 and how both of them managed to survive dating without telling the other about their big life defining traumatic event? 

In terms of canon typical that, I fully believe they just never formally came out to each other. They’re watching a movie one day and a woman walks on screen and Georgie says “Oh damn. Okay, sorry Jon, I’m leaving you, I did just meet my new wife”. Similarly Jon finishes a book one day and is giving the infodump summary to Georgie and says “Thank god I didn’t read this when I was a teenager, or I would’ve been swooning over (male character)” and both of them just accept this and never really think about it 

Until Georgie is like “Oh pride is this weekend if you hadn’t noticed by the Everything all over the students union, I take it you’re coming with?” and Jon says “Oh, uhm, I suppose? I’ve never actually been before, what do I do?” Georgie assures him that honestly it’s mostly about pouring glitter in your hair, walking about the city, trying not to get trampled in a crowd and then going for drinks. Jon says that sounds like his idea of hell but he’ll come along anyway.

Jon arrives at Georgie’s dorm beforehand just in time to see her painting pink, blue and purple streaks across her face. “You want paint?” she calls, not looking up from the mirror. “Sure?” Jon agrees, just kind of going with what everyone else is doing for the day. She turns round to do his, but he leans back in time to say “Oh, wrong colours actually? I- I mean I’ll still take the purple for- for the ace if you have the rest for that but I prefer pan over bi? I mean I don’t really care but if it’s supposed to be, well, ‘pride’ then I may as well go with the preferred term?’ 

And Georgie realises then that they’ve legitimately never had a conversation about their shared queerness and needs to reboot slightly because she’s just remembered there was a time when they started dating when she had assumed Jon was straight and he’d probably assumed she was straight and they’d subconsciously realised that that was very much not true
