i think a really good and underused trope in horror is a character doing something totally normal in their house, like the laundry or the dishes or just sitting in bed reading a book, and then randomly turning their head for whatever reason only to catch the last second of a door silently closing.

(thinking about this specifically because in my room at my mom's house, the door to the attic is on the ceiling of my doorless closet, and whenever i spend the night there, i sometimes look up and imagine how i'd feel if i suddenly caught the attic door quickly and quietly sliding shut.)

the crucial element here is not actually seeing anyone behind the door or noticing a very big movement or hearing a sound. it's that half-second of movement before it's closed and then all of the blood draining from your body. because now it's like. did you see that or not? do you go check and confirm if you did? do you leave the house altogether on the off chance that you did? what if you do check and you can't find anyone or anything? do you trust that you just made it up in your head?
