Apparently, they're making a new Dracula with Mina as the long-lost love. Again. Which probably means she's going to have all her character stripped away and become essentially an object of desire and... grrr!

Mina of the books isn't the best fleshed-out female character ever, but she's clever and resourceful and helpful and loyal. I'd call one of her strongest character traits a desire to be useful: learning shorthand, memorizing traintables, and volunteering to be hypnotized to turn the Count's actions against him. She's not a completely helpless waif too naive to be left to her own devices, she's a reasonably capable woman-of-the-time in way over her head and making the best of it.

I desperately wish her drinking Drac's blood was presented as it was in the books: hands held behind her back, face being forced down to his chest - I believe the quote is something close to "like a kitten being forced to drink milk from a bowl". That image has stuck with me since the very first time I read Dracula. It's not the act of lust usually shown, she's being FORCED and that is so much more horrific

Also, frustrating is that we'll probably get another lusty Lucy. Lucy was never as grounded as Mina, but the movies like to portray her as more of a temptress scoffing at the bounds of propriety because heaven forbid three buddies (who for all we know might have met her at the same social event at the same time) might fall for the same girl naturally. She must be tempting them.

Book Lucy is sweet. She hates rejecting Quincy and Seward because she doesn't like hurting others, but she does because she favors Arthur. She's not even sure he's going to propose, but she hopes and so turns them down.

Her sweetness and light makes her early death more tragic. Dracula is taking away somebody whose most scandalous thought is that people ought to be allowed more husbands; not for count-the-legs-and-divide-by-two spicy situations, but because she doesn't want people she's fond of to have to be unhappy. Honestly, she'd probably try to give Seward to Mina, but that's a whole other conversation (and fun fanfic fodder).

TLDR: Stop diminishing the girls.

(Also, stop making Van Helsing simultaneously too cool and far less interesting than he is in the book. I may have more rants on this...)

To me personally, the June 24th entry still stands out as the one of the greatest horror in the novel. We have Jonathan who moments ago barely managed to escape the clutches of the three ladies, hiding away in his room (after he managed to break their spell on him by his own strengt of will!), suddenly perceiving in the room next door a soft cry and wail, the sounds of a babe, and memory floods back to what happened last time sounds like that were heard, and he pushes against his door, only now it is locked, and as much as he might slam against it and cry and scream, it won’t bulge an inch, while in the next room the wailing stops and the silence that follows is even worse then the cruise, and all he can do is slide to the ground and let the tears flow 

And this utter and absolute helplessness that he has to experience is so much different from what we see others experience later on, for, when Mina is attacked for the final time, she is conscious enough to hear and remember Dracula´s evil monologue, gaining enough information to defeat him later on. Her horrors are turned into purpose. When  Van Helsing and the Suitor Squad unsuccessfully try to save Lucy from her “illness” they are at last given a chance to do something, managing to at least comfort her in her last hours. 

Jonathan could do nothing, achieved nothing. He was forced to listen and listen as an innocent child suffered only a few feet away from him, forced to watch its poor mother (who I still believe to be the wife of that Romani man who wanted to help Jonathan, so their child was taken as punishment) be torn to pieces, all while being cursed by the same woman who was left to believe that he was the perpetrator of her agony.

That is why, ladies and gentlemen, the June 24th entry is the most horrifying.

One of my more radical beliefs is that everyone, regardless of occupation, should be required to take a first aid course at some point in their adult life so that, even if you don’t keep up the cert, if someone says to you “My chest has been really hurting and I’ve been having trouble breathing I think I’m gonna lay down for a bit” your hindbrain kicks in and you say “That’s a bad idea. upon learning that the upcoming Dracula movie is yet another Dracula/Mina romance, here is an incomplete list of things that would be more interesting in an adaptation than a Dracula/Mina romance:

A romance between Dracula and literally any other character

An origin story for the lady vampires

A feature length adaptation of the Demeter plot (yes, I know this exists already, it deserves more adaptations)

A Dracula origin story set at the Scholomance

Mina and Jonathan going into that "unknown and terrible land" together

Dracula deciding that, rather than just murdering people, he can offer sex in exchange for blood, and chooses to go to London to do this because the locals will not be receptive. He awkwardly tries to ask Jonathan about prostitution in London and Jonathan's proper gentleman sensibilities are affronted

Dracula gets committed to Seward's asylum, somehow

Dracula gets stuck in wolf form and gets adopted by one of the protagonists

Dracula and his ladies go to Van Helsing, expert on the occult that he is, to ask for help trying to conceive

The Crew of Light try to imprison Dracula rather than destroy him, theorizing that, if they can find a way to cure him, everyone he's turned will be cured

Dracula's sexy immortal vampire harem kicking him out of his own castle because they're sick of his shit

Dracula and Van Helsing as bitter exes

The solicitor who gets sent to Dracula is now Gabriel John Utterson, hoping for a nice relaxing vacation after all the Dr. Jekyll business

Sherlock Holmes, somehow

Dracula marries Mrs. Westenra

Dracula is in the Wild West and gets attacked by vampire hunting cowboys

Dracula being so creeped out by Renfield's obsession and vows of servitude that he flees to another country (to which Renfield follows him)
