“It wasn’t shitty,” Mads shook her head, looking over at Alex with wide apologetic eyes. “It was just… human.” She didn’t blame Alex. She had done it herself. How many people had she walked out on after things got too hard? She had spent so much of her life drifting from place to place, never staying too long to get attached. The second she felt like she might want to settle down for good, she’d skip town. It had been easier that way. It had saved her from having to watch even more of her friends, even more people she loved, get to grow old, have a family, and have a life. Something that she didn’t believe was possible for a girl like her until now. She knew why Alex had done it. It didn’t make Alex a bad person. But, it didn’t change the fact, that just as Alex was a runner, she was scaredy cat. She was so afraid to get heart broken like that again, knowing she wouldn’t be able to put herself back together if she let herself fall.
“Alex-” The name left her lips. She wanted to believe her and a small part of her did and, maybe in a few weeks from now, after they spent time re-getting to know each other, she’d be ready to let the girl completely in. Maybe they’d get together down the line and be better people for it. For what they had gone through. For what they had experienced. Maybe, the two town screw ups could really do it this time. They’d date and figure out if this worked, without the mess. They’d get their lives together and have a family. Maybe. Just Maybe.
“I- I’d like that,” Maddy admitted, nodding her head as she gave the girl a little smile. “How about- how about we start over?” Maddy offered up. “Hi! I’m Maddy, and I think you’re hella cute,” Mads said, taking a step closer to Alex and reaching out to give her hand a little squeeze. “No labels. No commitment. Let’s just- go out? On a real date and see where things go maybe? If it doesn’t work, then straight back to friends. Just friends this time. But, if it does? Then who knows? Then maybe we can try for real this time?” She asked nervously, biting down on her lower lip as she looked up at her with a little smile. She might not have been able to take the fall just yet, but she hoped Alex wouldn’t mind settling for a little leap. “And let’s get one thing straight. I’m always annoyed with you and we’re always fighting from what we’re gonna be to what Dorito flavor is the best but- You will always be my partner in crime, Alex. No matter what this is and no matter what we become to each other. I’m lucky to have you,” Maddy told her, stepping forward and giving Alex a light kiss on the cheek.
Maybe, just maybe they could have been a lot of things. If only they had had enough time. As Maddy pulled back, the hair on the back of her neck stood straight up. She should have caught it earlier. She had been trained to be on guard for this. All of those drills in the back of the yard that her father had made her do when she was young, over and over again, just in case. But, she had been swept up in the moment. For the second time in Maddy’s life, she hadn’t been paying attention and it was about to cost her dearly. “Alex,” Maddy, whispered, pulling herself in front of the girl as she noticed the men zoning in on them. “Run.”
“I think shitty and human can go hand in hand,” Alex replied, with a breathless laugh. Being shitty was something she had been good at for a long time, it felt nice to poke her head out of the hole she dug for herself and commit to something. Even when it was difficult sometimes, she was seeing how committing to things, be it her job or Maddy, was paying off. Her life felt more complete. She laughed at Maddy’s introduction and shook Maddy’s hand, nodding her head to the other blonde.
“Name’s Alex and the pleasure is all mine,” she smirked and did a little shimmy where she stood to add to the sillyness of everything. She settled down at Maddy’s offer, warmth enveloping her heart and she knew she had to play it cool. Fist-pumping the air and exclaiming something in excitement might seem too desperate, but Alex grinned instead. “Dude, that’d be fucking awesome. A date. Something chill, maybe romantic. Who knows, maybe there’s a Doritos tasting bar around these parts.” She said, reaching out and grabbing Maddy’s hand, giving it a little squeeze. “You’re my best friend and I’ve never had one before. Thanks for giving me a second chance.”
Alex blinked in confusion and pulled herself out of her giddy delirium, honing in on her senses and heard heavy footsteps some distance behind her rapidly approached. She turned, brows furrowed as they were a few yards away and they didn’t look friendly. What was going on? Was someone trying to rob them? Alex pulled Maddy’s hand as they started to sprint back in the direction of the event, but suddenly it seemed like they had walked much farther than they realized. One of the men called her name and she could hear their pace quicken to match Maddy and Alex’s. A strong, large hand planted itself on Alex’s shoulder and jerked her back, causing Alex to stumble and let go of Maddy’s hand. She cried out in surprise and twisted around as two of the men took advantage of her slowed pace and went and grabbed her arms.
“Maddy, run!” Alex cried out, not wanting Maddy to be caught in the crossfire. Alex pushed one of the men down before the other wrapped his arms around her waist. She kicked her legs and threw her elbows back, trying to get him to drop her.

madelinexholt:
“Yeah. I kind of miss those Doritos day. We would have made some hell of good taste testers,” Maddy said, smiling at the thought. It felt like a lifetime ago; that girl she once was, the girl who used to go streaking through fountains and was the life of the party with just one smile.
Maddy was proud of who she had become. She had the choice to either be broken or get her life together and she had opted for the second option. But, even still, even though she was happy, even though she loved the life she had made for herself, she couldn’t help but sometimes miss that girl. She couldn’t help but sometimes wonder who she would have been had Alex not left.
Would she still have been someone people could be proud of? And where would they be? Without the awkward tension in the air? Back before she had attempted to be a teacher? Back when she had no future? Back when she hadn’t even thought of it as a possibility? Would they have been together? Back when life was easier? Back when they were two girls living in the moment? Living in their own little bubble, with consequences just a distant thought?
She wanted to believe they would. But, amongst the wave of what if, was the heartbreaking fact that girl couldn’t ever exist. Not anymore. She would always be a part of Maddy, but she was slowly becoming, but a distant stranger now. A memory you’d look back on in a scrapbook one day and smile some sappy nostalgic smile over the life you could have lived.
Glancing up at Alex, Mads raised an eyebrow, patiently waiting for what she was about to say next. “Um… not really?” Mads asked. Her forehead scrunching a little in confusion as Alex continued.
“Alex,” The name was all but a whisper. “That’s great, Alex,” Maddy said with a little smile and she meant it. She was so proud of Alex. She always had been. The beautiful blonde before her had always been some Maddy had been overjoyed to have in her life. That first day they met, Maddy would always consider a blessing. Despite how life had drifted them apart, Alex had always been one of the best things that had ever happened to Maddy. She was her best friend. The one person who could make her laugh no matter the occasion. And even if they didn’t always know each other’s hobbies and interests, even if they had never shared personal details like family with one another up until now, from the first second she had met her, she had felt like she knew her. Like this girl understood her inside and out.
And she knew, no matter how much Alex argued that the girl she was after she had her memories altered wasn’t her, that it wasn’t what she wanted- Maddy knew that wasn’t completely true. Alex had once told her she wanted to be someone her parents could be proud of and even though, Mads truly believed her parents would always be proud of her no matter how together she was, she knew where ever they were, they’d be smiling if they saw her now.
“Alex,” Her voice broke as she spoke. “I-” She looked up at the girl and gave her a little shrug. “God, I’ve always loved you. And I always will love you. Whether you are a drunken mess on my front doorstep or owning your own truck and getting your GED. But-” Her voice broke again, hating that there had to be a but. “But- I- I was a mess when you left the first time and I know- I know you’ve changed. I know. But, I just- I- I can’t do it again. I can’t- If I let you in, If I-” She bite down on her lower lip, letting out a little breath. Her smile still bright across her lips despite the tears brimming around her eyes. “I always want to be able to talk to you. I don’t want to go out for a while and then break up and then not see each other anymore. Because not hanging out, not being friends, not laughing until two in the morning about something as silly as the flavors of Doritos sucks. I don’t want to be strangers walking past each other on the street. And- and isn’t that what happens next? We start great? Constant fireworks? Until we one day wake up and realize, we never pushed each other to be anything more? We start resenting each other? Wondering if we’re smart enough? Good enough? I- I don’t want that. I want you in my life forever. And I just,” Maddy bite down on her lower lip again as she looked up at Alex. Her voice soft as she spoke. “I just- I don’t want to get hurt again.”
Alex felt her heart sink again. This wasn’t a new conversation for them it seemed like, it was just one that they would battle with for a bit longer. Maybe forever. But in truth, Alex knew it wasn’t the right time to ask they be together. Alex wasn’t even sure if she wanted that exactly, not in the formal sense that seemed to be popular in movies. She didn’t really know what she wanted aside from Maddy, but not even in a possessive sense. Alex never really felt possessive or jealous, but if she could have Maddy in her life and have that reassurance, then maybe things would be okay.
But instead, she nodded in understanding. “No, I get it. What I did was super shitty and you didn’t deserve that,” she agreed. Alex looked down. She had spent a lot of time crying over this, over Maddy in tandem of the loss of her brothers. Now it was just over Maddy. Alex didn’t have the answers to Maddy’s questions, but then again, did anyone? Alex looked back up, swallowing the lump in her throat and shrugged. “I don’t know. I don’t know what would happen, if that fire would die or anything. I don’t know if I’ll wake up one day and realize love is this weird thing that changes and sometimes goes away. But I know that I never want to leave again. And if you wind up resenting me, that’s okay. And if you’d want to leave, that’s okay too,” she stopped herself before letting out a small laugh. “I mean, not really okay, it’d suck but like, I get it. What I mean is; I left once and it changed everything for us. I can’t get that out of my mind and I regret it all of the time. I won’t do anything like that again.”
Alex let out a shaky sigh, hoping the words were coming out the way she wanted them to. It seemed like nowadays everything was pushing her to do the things she had avoided for years: going to school, talking about her feelings, commitment. It was difficult but it didn’t scare her the way it used to anymore. “I don’t want to be strangers, either. I want to do all these cool things together with you. I wanna throw you a party when you graduate, I want to pay for a date when we go out. I want to do the stuff for you that I couldn’t before,” she replied earnestly. “I don’t want to pressure you into anything. I don’t even know if I’m asking for you to be my girlfriend. I just want to go into life knowing we’ll always be like...partners, or something. Even if I’m not the only one, even if you get annoyed with me or me with you; I don’t know what the word for that kind of thing is, but I want you to know I want it and I’m gonna fight for you. Because yeah, like you said, if it all falls apart that’s the worst. But you’re someone who’s worth it. I’d fall apart over you because it meant we got to have a shot at this thing.” She insisted. Her tone had grown more passionate but still just as earnest. She needed Maddy to know. Alex knew she needed to say these things, and no matter what Maddy would decide, Alex would know she put in a real effort and gave it her all. If that wasn’t enough, she would know it wasn’t because she didn’t half-ass any of it. She let out a small breath and nodded softly. “And that’s my case, Judge.”

“I’m really sorry you got mixed up in this because of me.” It was her worst nightmare, someone else getting hurt because of her fathers need to find her. As the other Alex spoke, she herself began to look around the dank looking room and she nodded her head. “Yeah, it looks like a basement.” She agreed as she tried to wiggle her wrists in the ties but feeling the burn against her skin and knowing it had to be wolfsbane. “There covered in wolfsbane but if I turn just enough to sharpen my teeth I could try and cut them lose that way.” She offered unsure of how to free herself in this situation. Watching as feet passed by the window outside.
“Hey, hey, it’ll be fine,” Alex tried to reassure, but her voice was soft. She didn’t know if it would be fine. She knew less about these people than the other Alex did, but knew if she herself didn’t remain calm, then there would be zero chance of escape. “Okay, let’s try that,” she said, feeling relieved that they were getting somewhere and able to work together.
Alex followed Alex’s lead, and focused on shifting in spite of the growing burn on her wrists. In her awakening and disorientation, she hadn’t even noticed the wolfsbane that was quietly singing her skin. She forced herself to shift just enough for her sharp canines to appear and began to saw away at the ropes. She coughed and sputtered as it burned her throat and mouth. She looked back up at Alex to see her progress. “You finished yet?” she asked, spitting onto the floor to try and expel the wolfbane from her mouth before going back at it. With one final tug the ropes snapped and her wrists were free.

Alex looked confused by the words but figured it was best to not think too much of it given the circumstances. If this was just a normal day she might just ask what she meant by that. “Yeah,” She said nodding her head. “Alexandra, but everyone calls me Alex any more.” She explained.
“It’s…” Alex paused trying to find the right words to explain it. “My father’s not a good person, you could liken it to the mafia but he’s not a good guy. He works with the clave and I’ve been running from him for almost 30 years now.” She explained before taking a shaky breath. “At this point, I don’t know what he wants.” She was scared of what he’d do to her for defying him after all of these years but more than that she was scared of someone else getting hurt because of her. “We have to find a way out of here.” She said looking up at the other Alex.
“Oh, shit,” Alex breathed upon the mention of the Clave. She had been fortunate enough to go her life without directly encountering any Clave members up until now. She had only heard the horror stories and known the history from what others in Hollow Grove had told her. Alex nodded softly and looked around the room. There was the obvious choice: the door. Then on the eastern wall, a small, flat window perched high up on the wall.
“I think we’re like, in a basement,” Alex said, squinting her eyes up at the window. She thought she could see tufts of grass brimming the bottom side of the window. “Think we could squeeze through that? We cut these ropes and I could give you a boost?” She asked, raising her wrists, still tied together.

“Oh okay,” Mads said, letting out a little relieved sigh as she brought a stray strand of hair back behind her ear. “Oh.. I’ve never been to good at that. The grown-up conversations. I… I don’t know. I mean… life’s good. It’s great. I haven’t drank in weeks, I’m going to school, I have a house now. A real life house. With like multiple rooms and a backyard. But,” She trailed off glancing up at Alex as she spoke and giving the girl a little shrug. She had thought that if she had gotten her life together, things would be better. She’d feel better and she did, for the most part, but no matter good she now looked on paper, she still felt the same way inside. Like the same lonely little blonde who slept in a ball under a ceiling of glow in the dark stars with no one around to call her own. “But, I’m still me.” She was still a mess and she was still way over her head. “With all the crap that comes with it,” She shrugged again, glancing down at her feet as she added, “And if I remember correctly, we never used to have a problem saying what we think. So why start now?”
“Hey if we’re gonna start looking at grown-up conversation track records, I’d say we’re an even match,” Alex teased with a smile. It was until recently that their conversations had become more serious. They had talked about their families and education. Before Alex left, it was all Doritos and drunken pranks, chasing the next high together. How so much had changed in four months. Alex smiled, genuinely proud of Maddy. While she never knew Maddy wanted to be a teacher, when Alex found out Maddy was going back to school for that, it seemed to make sense. Alex remembered how tender and natural Maddy had been with the baby Alex had babysat. Working with children seemed like it would suit her. Alex wasn’t sure if she’d ever figure out what suited her, so it was definitely something admirable.
“Dude, that’s fucking sweet,” Alex said with a warm smile, reached out and touching Maddy’s arm. She gave it a squeeze when Maddy revealed her ‘but’ and took it as an opportunity to say what Alex had wanted to say. “Funny you say that, that’s kind of a good way to get into what I wanted to say.”
She took a deep breath and dropped her hand from Maddy’s arm in case Maddy wanted to bolt after Alex spoke.
“I know the last time I brought this up, things were really emotional. I wanted to give us some time and I dunno, space? Just something to see if what I felt was real and I don’t know. You know what I mean?” She said, trying to describe her feelings. Emotions were probably more difficult to discuss than that chapter of The Magic Tree House that she didn’t read. “When I said I love you and all of that. I wanted to give us space so you could go and do kick-ass stuff while I played catch-up. And I think I have. I live with this chick Billie and she’s giving my some money off rent if I help her fix her uncle’s house. She’s like a bee-keeper and super cool and helps me with homework. Mara’s been helping me balance partying and being an adult. I’m getting my GED, I bought a truck. I’m doing all the stuff I never thought I would do. And I think it says a lot that when I’m at my lowest, I love you. And now that I’m at my best and probably only going to get better, I still love you. And all the crap that comes with you. And I’m not just saying that because you bought a sick house.”

“You had me at free food and half of what we need for mimosas.” Looking over at Alex with a smile, she kept her arm around her as they made their way to Church Street. “I’m just hugging you? This isn’t even sexual.” Shaking her head disapprovingly at Alex, she continued to smile. “It’s never going to happen between us babe just give it up.” Teasing before she placed a kiss on top of Alex’s head and let her go. “Plus let’s be real you couldn’t handle me even if you tried. It takes a special type of person to handle all of this.” Gesturing to herself with a laugh. “Don’t be sad though I’m sure some of my other suitors that I’ve turned down would welcome you to their monthly meeting.” Elbowing Alex playfully in the side, she continued her fake sweet act with a flip of her hair.
“Do not oh my god me.” Telling Alex as just before she sighed loudly. “I want eight hours of sleep and to wake up with a hot person bringing me breakfast in bed, preferably with them naked.” Mara pointed out, she looked around the shop and started to study all of the people. Most were familiar faces, but there was still a few she didn’t know. “I’m a no pancake girl. Pancakes aren’t my jam, but waffles. Waffles are my jam.” Picking up two plates, she handed one over to Alex once they were at the buffet. Scooping up a few pieces of bacon, eggs, and some fruit while she made her way down the line. “What about you? Are you a pancake girl?”
“Babe, any form of physical touch can be sexual,” Alex cooed playfully, goosing Mara’s rear end before they had fully pulled out of the hug. “Take a page from my Player’s Playbook!” she laughed at Mara’s counterargument. What started out as friendly flirting had become a high-stakes challenge for Alex now. She wanted to see if Mara would ever take her up on her advances, but deep down Alex knew Mara was right: Alex was a dog chasing a car. What would she even do if Mara agreed? “Oh god, there’s like an AA meeting for people rejected by Mara Hastings? Yikes. But hey, as long as it isn’t my turn to bring the donuts, I could be down. Thirst thirsts for thirst, right? Getting tail there would be like taking candy from a baby.”
“Waffles! My man!” Alex hollered at Mara’s response, holding up her hand for Mara to high-five. A few bystanders turned and looked, bewildered at the exclamation and irritated due to a lack of coffee. Alex winked at one of them before grabbing the generic ceramic plate off the stack on the buffet table. “Waffles. You put that berry compote on there, some slabs of bacon, drown it in syrup, but like, fill the holes with the syrup, right?” She grinned, inhaling deeply as she threw a stack of five waffles and two bushels of bacon onto her plate. “Okay, real talk: what’ve you been up to lately? How’s the vampy-Bachelor-tiara dude? How’s that cop guy? I feel like I haven’t heard the lowdown in forever.”

“Your Maddy’s friend,” Alex said as she rubbed her eyes as she tried to fight off the heavy feeling that was weighing her down. “Maddy’s my cousin.” She explained. “They think you’re me.” She explained as she sat up now. “They were looking for a blonde, named Alex, similar features by a sheer description standpoint. There also kind of mindless cronies so I’m not surprised they got confused.” Alex said with a sigh as she looked over at the other woman. “I’m sorry you got dragged into this.”
“Yeah, I mean, if that’s what we’re calling it,” Alex said softly, thinking back to her conversation with Maddy. Of course she wanted more than friends but-- “Wait, you’re Alex too? And Maddy’s cousin?” she asked, blinking in bewilderment. This felt like some version of a Freaky Friday, if Freaky Friday took place in the basement of a serial killer.
“What do they want with you?” Alex asked, furrowing her brows in concern. “Is this like, some mafia thing? You don’t owe them money, do you?” She shook her head. She’d been in tricky situations before, maybe this was something she could handle. If the Alex looking back at her was the one they wanted, wouldn’t she be more worried for herself than she was for Alex?

Mads turned around, a smile spreading across her face as Alex nudged her. “Hey Stranger, long time no see,” She grinned, raising an eyebrow at the Blonde’s question before giving her a little nod. “Yeah, sure. What’s going on?” She brought up as she followed after Alex. She had missed this. Hanging out, talking. She just wanted things to go back to normal between them, or at least for them to create a new normal- one where they could at least be friends- one where things seemed less awkward between them.
“Nothing much, like, nothing’s wrong,” Alex assured as they walked away from the crowd over to the park. She didn’t know exactly what she wanted to say, just that she wanted to be near Maddy. Events didn’t feel right without her partner in crime. Sure, Alex had plenty of friends in town and her life was finally on some semblance of a track. But she still wanted Maddy to be in it, to be part of it. “I just...wanted to catch up, I guess? How’s grad school? How’s the basket stuff? I just...I dunno, I feel like this is one of those small-talk grown-up conversations,” she trailed off before sighing. “That small talk when you want to say something else, but instead boring crap just sort of tumbles out?” She gave a small, sheepish smile and shrugged before taking a sip from her beer.

alex-cunningham:
Fear. Sheer terror if she was being honest. She’d feared this moment for thirty years and for thirty years she’d tempted fate but she’d always managed to escape at only the last minute. Not today. Not in a place she’d been promised to be safe. Yet here she was barely conscious playing over the scene in her mind over and over again. She’d been too drunk to fight them off but the booze had long worn out now and she was lucid, to say the least when she was conscious, the wolfsbane in her bloodstream had severely diminished her strength. There was one point when she’d been lying there pretending to be unconscious that she’d heard two men arguing over which Alex was Alexandra. It wasn’t until she awoke once more a bit later that she understood what they were saying.
“Are you Alex?” She asked quietly after the other woman spoke.
Alex jumped slightly at the sound of another voice, then relaxed slightly upon seeing it was another woman who had evidently been unconscious as well. She had been knocked out completely before winding up here and she had so many questions. She furrowed her eyebrows in confusion at the other blonde’s question.
“What? Yeah, wait, how do you know that?” Alex asked curiously, scooting over to the other blonde. She looked around the room before back at the girl. She seemed familiar, but how? “What’s going on?”

“Why the hell are we up this early? I know it’s free food, but is it truly worth it?” Mara asked as she wrapped her arms around Alex’s waist and leaned into her as they walked towards Hell’s Kitchen. “I could be in bed right now sleeping the day away.” Sighing heavily, she untangled herself from Alex. “Are you sure you don’t want to go back home? It’s not too late to turn back. I promise I won’t judge you if we just turn around and go home.”

“Free food and half of what we need for mimosas,” Alex pointed out. She laughed and gave Mara a squeeze back. “Careful, if you keep touching me like that, I’ll have to go all wolf and jump your bones,” she teased, giving Mara a tickle.
“Oh my GOD!” She exhaled loudly at Mara’s complaining. “There’s coffee and mimosa fixings. We’ll give you sugar and alcohol, what more can anyone want?” she asked as they opened the door and stepped inside. She was admittedly a little hungover, but it was just a headache. Nothing a little hair of the dog couldn’t fix. There was a decent number of people buzzing around the buffet, scooping up piles of bacon and fresh fruit onto their plates. Alex’s stomach rumbled. “Okay, real talk: are you a savory or sweet pancake girl?”

“Hey, what’s cookin’, good lookin’?” Alex said with a smile, touching Maddy’s arm as she walked up behind her. The Chili Cook-off had just wrapped up when Alex caught sight of Maddy. How badly she wanted to put her arm around Maddy’s waist and couldn’t. The two had been working back towards a place where the awkwardness between them was no more, but they were still not quite there. Alex decided to keep things as normal as she could while still respecting Maddy’s boundaries. She smiled at the other small blonde.
“Hey, wanna grab a beer and talk for a minute?” She asked, her tone still light but more serious. She really wanted to reconnect with Maddy and have an honest conversation about the two of them. It had been too long since Alex had said ‘I love you’ and things turned to shit. It was time for a check-in, for some honesty. Pretending things were fine as you tiptoed on eggshells was exhausting and Alex didn’t want things to be that way with Maddy anymore.

Alex groaned softly, her head throbbing, the metallic taste of blood washing over her tongue. She felt like she had been hit by a truck. She opened her eyes, but her vision was hazy and when she tried to move, her wrists were bound together.
It took her a moment to remember what had happened. It wasn’t the bad dream she hoped it was. She was with Maddy, the two trying to have a conversation about where they could go from there. Alex missed her best friend, the woman she loved, but things were so complicated. Being abruptly attacked by strange men and being dragged off while the other blonde lay in a crumpled pile only made things worse.
Maddy.
She blinked a few times until her eyes could focus on the concrete floor and she pushed herself up into a seated position and looked around the room.
“What the fuck is going on?” she whispered, despite wanting to scream.

“Oh… Pregame. Yeah? Sure?” He mumbled, not really paying attention until Alex asked him how hard he had hit his head. “Very. Very hard,” He let out a little groan, rubbing the back of the scalp again, before glancing back up at Alex and attempting to explain, “I think- I think Issy might be pregnant?”
“Wait, what?” Alex choked on her beer and spat it onto the ground at the news. She coughed a little and looked up at Caleb. “Pregnant? Like, with a baby in her vagina?” She blinked in shock. “Oh my god...Wait, it’s yours, right?”
