Looking after Sterling Silver Jewelry
Caring for Sterling Silver Jewelry
Keep your sterling silver jewelry in an air tight bag, ziplock bags are great. Try to to also keep in a cool, dark, and dry place.
There's many 'old wives tales' you can find on you tube, which suggest that toothpaste is good at cleaning sterling silver,. It really doesn't work well, and can leave scratches. Polishing cloths are the best method to bring back that sparkle.
However, sterling silver jewelry wears really well, and I personally like the patina that comes from wearing it. It can add depth and character. If you want it shined back to mirror finish, then go ahead and use that polishing cloth.

So, just what is Sterling Silver?
I love working with Sterling Silver!
With some expereince, it is a beautiful material. As a poor student, many years ago, we all worked with 'guilding metal' the reason being I guess was that it was close in colour to gold! It was relatively inexpensive to get our work silver plated too.
However sterling silver sheet and wire is beautiful to work with.
Here's the technical bit:
Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper.
Fine silver is 99.9% pure silver.
I find fine silver is generally too soft so functional objects, like chains, catches and findings are made from sterling silver.
By alloying the silver (usually with copper) it gives the metal strength. This means you still have the beauty of the precious metal, but the ductility is preserved.
