Journal Entry #1
The Amoses are so mean, especially todd. He was like all the things momma said I should never be. This time he was on a mission. He looked at me like he was about to slug me so hard, until his mom opened the bedroom door calling us for supper. We walked out like best friends even though we were angry. Today was saturday so the food was better than normal. Mrs, Amose had cooked up some roast beef for everybody with some corn on the side. Normally I’m supposed to get less that everybody else as this wasn’t my house and I get that. Yet when nobody was looking I grabbed an extra spoon of corn and swallowed it whole. Once everybody was done I had to clean the table and do some chores. Todd would always make fun of me for it and everytime I would want to sock him in his doggonne face. I never did, while he was doin it but sometimes after I was done I would get him by surprise. This time was different though, he was really gettin me going and I couldn’t stand it. So as soon as I finished the chores I walked into our room and waited for him. It took like 25 minutes till he finally opened the door. I was ready and as soon as I saw his face, I popped him good. He screamed in fake pain to get his parents over. Mr. Amose screamed and took of his belt, looking me dead in the eye. He asked “what did you do you little rat.” “Nothin Sir, I just defended myself” I answered quietly. He then walked over grabbed be and strapped me for an hour without even anything to go off of. That would be the list time I’d Take this again from anybody.

Journal Entry #2
“Good morning son” the librarian said as I walked through the doors. I was the first one in and hopefully the last one out. I had nowhere to go so might as well kill some time looking at some war pictures. I looked at her and asked “Do you have anymore of them war books you gave me yesterday. She said” of course” and then handed me a thick book that I could barely hold. I waddled over to the back of the room with that doggonne book. Once I opened the book it was like I was in a whole new world. It seemed fun but deep down I knew it was only a book. A lot of time passed even though it felt like I had only been there for second. Then the librarian walked over seeming like she was gonna ask me something . She asked me “how it was goin with that one.” I answered back, lying straight to her face “it's cool.” She then knelt down next to me and asked if I could help her with something. I thought for a second then remembered Number 87 of Bud Caldwell’s Rules and Things for Having a Funner life and Making Better Liar Out Of Yourself

Something For Them
I told her I would but I didn’t plan on sticking to my word. I followed her towards the front of the library and as soon as she reached for a book, I booked it out the door. My suitcase in hand. I was gone and it was dark so I found a pretty good tree and layed under it. That's all for tonight i said as I dosed off.

Journal Entry #3
Lefty Lewis is so boring. I have been in this automobile with him for so long and every time he starts talking I would just knock out cold. This time he was talking about something to do with the railroad as this was one of the only things he ever talked about. His 3 topics were the Railroad, Baseball, and the Union. I fell asleep and started dreaming about momma and flint. In this dream I was sittin with momma on a bench at the park. It was late and the stars were bright. Then out of nowhere I was woken up to a screech, the car doors opening, and Lefty Lewis poking me to wake up. I used rule Number 29 of Bud Caldwell’s Rules and Things for Having a Funner life and Making Better Liar Out Of Yourself to make sure I was ok
RULES AND THINGS NUMBER 29
When You Wake Up And Don’t Know For Sure
Where You Are At And There’s A Bunch Of
People Standing Around You, It’s Best To Pretend
You’re Asleep Until You Can Figure Out What's
Going On And What You Should Do.
We were in a weird place where a bunch of people were. I Looked around at everybody next to Lefty until I saw the one man I was here to see, Herman E. Calloway. Then I heard a sound It was Lefty Screaming I opened my eyes to see Lefty Looking Back at me only to realize that whole thing was a doggonne dream.

Journal Entry #4
Now that I was safe with Grandpa Herman I could relax and play my new horn. I had finally found him and he was actually my Grandpa. He was starting to teach me how to make some cool jazz music in exchange for helping keep the place clean. Mrs. Thomas was always there too and she helped me with the chores cause Grandpa Didn’t want to. Sometimes Herman would tell me stories about momma when she was young. She never got to tell me them, so now Grandpa does instead.I looked at some of the pictures of her and they made me smile so much, I thought my face would get stuck. I knew deep down that I was gonna be here for a while and that couldn’t make me any happier.

Personal Narrative
Bud Not Buddy is a historical fiction novel written by Christopher Paul Curtis. The book follows the adventure of a ten year old orphan during The Great Depression. The Boys name is Bud and he is tired of living in the Home and with all the troublesome foster families. Along with him is a boy by the name of bugs who also decided to runaway from the foster home. They decide to travel west, but as they were about to board a train they are separated. Now alone once again Bud decides to go on a search for the man he believes to be his father, a man by the name of Herman E. Calloway. He uses a flyer for Herman's band from inside his trust suitcase to track down his supposed “father”. On his slow journey as he makes his way towards herman, Bud meets many people who are in the same boat as him. These people teach him different things about society and living. Using what he learned from the different people he eventually reaches Herman and his band. After meeting Herman for the first time he finds out that Herman is truly Buds grandfather. Herman, older and not fit to care for a child, is not to happy with the situation he has been forced into. This is worsened once Bud brakes the news that his mother had passed a while back and that he needs a place to stay. Grieving he allows bud to stay and even gives him a horn to use. This pleases Bud and ends his journey.

I did what I do every night before I go to sleep, I checked to make sure everything was there. The way there are more and more kids coming into the home every day, I had to make sure no one had run off with any of my things.
Bud’s whole story almost revolves around this suitcase that his mother left him and throughout the story he keeps it as safe as he possibly can. He is so scared of losing his last connection to his mom that he checks it every morning and every night. He even gets to the point where he notices slight details about the suitcase that are different from what he usually does. His emotions are clearly called for as he loved his mom and lost her so suddenly at a young age.

But now that I’m almost grown I see momma wasn’t talking about doors opening to let ghosts into your bedroom, she meant doors like the door at the Home closing leading to the door at the Amoses’ opening…
Bud throughout the story slowly grows due to his past experiences and here is one of them. His mom had always said that one day he would truly understand the things that she was telling him and that once he did, it would change him forever. That is what happens here and continues on through the whole book.

They were all the colors you could think of, black, white and brown, but the fire made them look like they were different shades of orange. There were dark orange folks sitting next to medium orange folks sitting next to light orange folks.
As a young sheltered child, Bud has not interacted with much of society and the different groups that exist. Thus making him naive to different problems of his time where it is a struggle for not only him. Here he sees an example of poverty through a Hooverville, a line of trash towns through out the U.S during The Great Depression, and the people who live inside of it. He also sees how people come together due to them and he is amazed.
