How I plan on developing my design further is by making a frame for the heart and maybe making it stand forward from the frame.

After scanning my design onto the computer and editing it a little I went to get it laser cut and engraved into plywood, extremely happy with how it turned out and I will definitely be developing this further!

First stage of my laser cutting workshop involved planning out what I was going to make out of either plywood or acrylic.

Monday 13th of November We had a small talk about different artists and how they use text and how they influence a message behind their work and then we were sat a task to create a piece of artwork within their style. My chosen artist was Barbara Kruger, the topic of my poster was going to be about animal abuse so I started off by doing some research into the topic such as the punishments you can get for committing the crime and what actually is classed as animal abuse. I then went and picked out words, letters and numbers from different newspapers and came up with the catchy title of “tiny murder victim”. I put this title together with a photo of a kitten that looks like it’s screaming as I think this image fits well with the topic I chose. I want to do some more of these because I really like Barbara’s Work and I would love to explore areas that others feel passionate about.

working on the case study I have chosen to focus on the artist Christian Hook who is probably my favourite artist ever. I love his work and his distinctive style. I wish I could have attended his recent exhibition in London to see The Darwin Series (top photo is one of the pieces from the exhibition) but hopefully i’ll get to go to his next one.

Today’s workshop was interesting, we got to experiment with cutting out shapes and trying to turn them into 3D shapes by using a slot method. My experiments didn’t turn out too well but I guess that’s why they’re called experiments!😂 I’m excited for next week because we get to use the laser cutter.

Monday morning talk-30th October
On Monday we had a visit from Louise Palfreyman who talked to us about writing as artists and helped us understand how to get our art out and into the world. It also helped us to think about where we see art on a day to day basis, places such as galleries, newspapers, online etc. We also answered questions such as:
What are some of the ways artists can reflect on their practice?
How can artists provide commentary on their work and the work of others?
Does the artist-critic make the traditional critic redundant?
What platforms would you choose to self publish your own writing about your art?
This helped ask questions about our own artwork and gave us ideas on areas to improve. The talk really helped me think about my future and helped me when thinking about making my own website or even sharing more of my artwork on my exsisting accounts until I build up my portfolio more.

Our afternoon workshop we focused more on Photoshop and using the technique of adjustment layers, I played around with other effects too such as the magic wand tool and adjustments to the hue and saturation of the image.

This was halfway through cutting out my leaf sculpture, you can see the imprint the leaf had on the clay and hopefully the colour will turn out orange 🍁🤞🏻

Wednesday session was by far my favourite session yet. We got to experiment with soft clay and all the different techniques that come along with it. We started off by making paper sculptures of what we wanted to make in the end but mine was completely different to my end results. My paper sculpture was going to be a heart because I believe that things like the heart and the brain are at the centre of our identity, they physically help your body live but I also think the heart holds things that are closest to you such as people, memories and even emotions. In the session we were inducted on how to use liquid latex, slip colour, slip trail, how to add texture and rolling/pressing colour and how to mould them into different shapes. For my first experiment I started off with a red base and then added liquid latex on top in the pattern of a sun, when the latex was dry I then added a slip colour of yellow over the top and waited for that to dry before peeling the latex off. I then put it onto a plaster mould and made it curve so when it dries to will hold the shape of a bowl. My second experiment I used a plain piece of soft clay and pressed a leaf into it, leaving the outline so that I could colour it in red and yellow to attempt to make orange (I really hope it worked) and then cut around the outline of the leaf. I also did little testers for my sketchbook, I will post photos of the process of my pieces in another post.
