EVERLARK MOMENTS #1: THE ROOFTOP PICNIC
Location description: I follow him to a flight of stairs that lead to the roof. There’s a small dome-shaped room with a door to the outside. As we step into the cool, windy evening air, I catch my breath at the view. The Capitol twinkles like a vast field of fireflies. <…> On the other side of the dome, they’ve built a garden with flower beds and potted trees. From the branches hang hundreds of wind chimes, which account for the tinkling I heard. Here in the garden, on this windy night, it’s enough to drown out two people who are trying not to be heard. / THG, ch.6
The moment: The roof. We order a bunch of food, grab some blankets, and head up to the roof for a picnic. A daylong picnic in the flower garden that tinkles with wind chimes. We eat. We lie in the sun. I snap off hanging vines and use my newfound knowledge from training to practice knots and weave nets. Peeta sketches me. We make up a game with the force field that surrounds the roof—one of us throws an apple into it and the other person has to catch it. No one bothers us. By late afternoon, I lie with my head on Peeta's lap, making a crown of flowers while he fiddles with my hair, claiming he's practicing his knots. After a while, his hands go still. “What?” I ask. “I wish I could freeze this moment, right here, right now, and live in it forever,” he says. Usually this sort of comment, the kind that hints of his undying love for me, makes me feel guilty and awful. But I feel so warm and relaxed and beyond worrying about a future I'll never have, I just let the word slip out. “Okay.” I can hear the smile in his voice. “Then you'll allow it?” “I'll allow it,” I say. His fingers go back to my hair and I doze off, but he rouses me to see the sunset. It's a spectacular yellow and orange blaze behind the skyline of the Capitol. “I didn't think you'd want to miss it,” he says. “Thanks,” I say. Because I can count on my fingers the number of sunsets I have left, and I don't want to miss any of them. / CF, ch.17

I just want to hold you close Feel your heart so close to mine And just stay here in this moment For all the rest of time*

*Aerosmith - I Don't Want to Miss a Thing is official anthem of the rooftop scene, come on. It’s just PERFECT. I consider this song as a soundtrack for this moment. Right?!
P.S. Once again, what do you know about dream job? This illustration is a commission!! I mean, a person (wonderful, amazing person!) payed me for drawing this! For drawing one of the most beautiful moments from my favorite book! Dear @thehellcaster thank you again. I wanted to draw this moment for ages but considering level of detail I just couldn’t afford to spend so much time on one illustration (it would take me like a month to complete I think, since I don’t really have time for personal projects now). So it is a real luck to have an opportunity to draw this moment properly as a part of my work. Thank you! And hope you like the results ☺️.

Is it too early for me to rant about how the media picked up on all of katniss’ “masculine” traits and used them to explain why she was a strong female character, all the while completely ignoring all the “feminine” traits that she has and possesses, therefore perpetuating the idea in probably a lot of young girls minds that in order to be seen as strong they had to reject femininity?
(My little side note here being: yes, katniss and peeta subvert the traditional male and female roles, but also what is beautiful about both of them is characters is that they both display stereotypical masculine and feminine traits, and that’s what makes them human and real. Arguably when katniss learns to embrace her more emotional “feminine” side, it’s when she is actually able to find more peace)

jena malone’s performance as johanna mason in the movies is iconic and i do enjoy it quite a bit, but it’s interesting to note how the movies changed her character. for example, in the interview scene, jo is a woman with nothing left to lose but her temper. she looks directly into the camera and accuses the capitol of sending her to her death, then swears at the audience for being complicit.
youtube
Caesar: We have seen a lot of tears here tonight, but I see no tears in Johanna’s eyes. Johanna, you are angry. Tell me why.
Johanna: [laughing] Well, yes, I’m angry. You know, I’m getting totally screwed over here.
Caesar: Uh-huh.
Johanna: The deal was that if I win the Hunger Games, I get to live the rest of my life in peace. But now, you wanna kill me again. [laughs] Well, you know what? FUCK THAT! And fuck everybody who had anything to do with it!
Caesar: Alright then. One woman’s opinion… Who’s next?
but in the book, johanna takes a much more diplomatic approach. she draws on the audience’s affection for the victors and uses it as a plea to change the rules of the quarter quell.
By the time Johanna Mason gets up, she’s asking if something can’t be done about the situation. Surely the creators of the Quarter Quell never anticipated such love forming between the victors and the Capitol. No one could be so cruel as to sever such a deep bond.
johanna won her games by pretending to be weak, and then surprising everyone by coming out as a real contender in the final act. she has a good sense of strategy. she’s cunning, and she knows how to manipulate an audience. instead of alienating the capitol with her anger, she appeals to their sympathies and presents a civil call to action.
a furious display of defiance would be offensive to capitol sensibilities, as seen in the movie. but in the book, jo is able to plant seeds of doubt in the institution of the hunger games in a much milder way. after all, at this point, many of the districts have already begun to rebel. they don’t need any encouragement. she’s trying to win over people who are on the fence - people in the capitol who have never had reason to question their government before.
