The pallid bat is known for its unique habit of feeding almost entirely from the ground. Unlike most other North American bats, this species captures little, if any, prey while in flight. With its huge ears, it can detect insects simply by listening for footsteps, and it can respond accurately to a split-second sound from up to 16 feet away.

Happy Bat Week!

Your bat is the Pallid Bat (Antrozous pallidus)!

Ranging from Canada to Mexico, this bat has adapted to eat a variety of insects, particularly arthropods. They eat almost half their weight in bugs every night (I did the same thing today at my workplace's chili cookoff) and are probably most famous for being immune to scorpion venom. These bats look at those little venomous sword-wielding insects and go "yeah, that looks gourmet." Studies are still being done into how, exactly, Pallid Bats manage to resist the venom, but it is believed that they might have a mutation that replaced the amino acids at their voltage-gated sodium channels. When they're not slaying tiny, angry dragons, this bat will sometimes treat themselves with nectar or cacti fruit.
