Ok so I am not sure if people graduating from collage get some sort of yearbook, etc but let’s assume the Samwell program/website includes the name of all people graduating and a quote.

Jack picks some historical figure, very inspiring, etc.

Shitty’s quote:

Jack rolls his eyes.

Next year quotes:

Ransom: “I love it here at Samwell. We have a great group of guys and we’re ready for a strong season.” - Jack Zimmermann

(Incidentally the most common quote he gave while in Samwell and the most common quote he gives in Falconers interviews. There’s a meme.)

Holster: “It wasn’t cruel.” - Jack Zimmermann on regards to his CRUEL SHEEP EMPIRE.

(That’s exactly how he wrote the quote.)

Lardo: “I could be a cat.” - Jack Zimmermann

(Said when picking his Halloween costume but no context explained, so make of that what you will.)

All the members of the hockey team that knew Jack put a quote, no matter how random.

Jack hangs his head and covers his face, knowing this will come up I every interview he has for the next month.

Year after that, Bitty has a hard time picking a quote because there’s just too many. He goes for a classic.

Okay, listen, so Derek Nurse is defending his doctoral thesis at Harvard. It’s about the ways in which fantasy by POC allegorizes the racialized experience while also unseating the concept of race (aka The Dream).

His fiancé William Poindexter, second-pair D-man for the Bruins, tells him he wants to invite some of the team. Nursey’s like, “Cool babe, you can bring whoever, it’s chill.” But Derek’s thesis defense is during the playoffs, so he’s like “lol I’ll be lucky if my fiancé even makes it.”

Then The Day comes. Derek is sweating bullets. He’s gone through his flashcards so many times they’re starting to lose meaning. He’s getting a shoulder massage from Will in the office next to the lecture hall when Will gets a text. He checks his phone and apologizes. He has to go because, “those idiots couldn’t navigate their way out of a trashcan.”

Derek does breathing exercises until the department chair calls his name. He walks out on shaking legs and looks into the crowd. It’s bigger than he was expecting. The first people he sees are his parents, grinning in the front row, then the doctoral committee, watching him stone faced, then in the back…

He nearly falls offstage when he sees them.

Sitting there are Will and the ENTIRETY of the Boston Bruins. The whole team, from captains to reserve players. A few of Will’s friends from his time with their AHL affiliate. One of the trainers is there. Someone is holding a “Let’s Go Defense” sign, and Derek is too stunned to laugh.

The presence of an entire NHL team at his thesis defense is so bizarre that he forgets his nerves entirely. He starts his presentation almost mechanically–he’s practiced it so many times he hardly needs to think. The whole thing is an out-of-body experience.

Then the doctoral committee leaves to deliberate, and, as Will hugs him, Derek has to ask, “Babe, what possessed to you bring the whole damn team to a thesis defense? Shouldn’t they be resting or something?”

Somewhere to his right, a Bruin calls out, “He won’t shut up about his fucking Harvard boyfriend!”

Another one says more calmly, “Not optional. We had to see if the hype was real.”

Derek laughs. “How did I do?”

“Too good!” someone chirps, “Why the hell are you with an idiot like Poindexter?!”

After that the whole thing dissolves into a William Poindexter roasting session, and Derek almost forgets that he’s waiting for the results of his defense.

Until the door opens, and the department chair smiles as she says, “Congratulations, Dr. Nurse.”

And the whole room erupts into the biggest celly of his entire life.

“Our kids will be raised absolutely knowing how much we love them and with zero pressure from us.” Jack knows how hard the past year has been for Bittle with his parents. He knows the ways they both grew up and wants to do his best to avoid their parents mistakes.

Bitty looks up from where he had been sniffling with his head on his boyfriends chest. “Our kids? When did we have children Mister Zimmermann?”

“Ha ha, Bittle. I haven’t adopted any kids without telling you. But I’ve been thinking about it. A family with you. How we’ll raise our children.”

Bitty knows Jack will be an amazing dad and is filled with hope for their future family. He mummers his agreement to Jack’s earlier statement and ducks his head back down with a smile.
