“Not... what?”

“I don’t have the energy for you to comment on how stupid I am today. I fucking know, okay? I don’t need you to tell me as well.”

“I wasn’t going to,” Regulus says quietly.

James only huffs, the disbelief clear in the way he’s not even bothering to look at Regulus.

Regulus halts in the doorway. Even when James sits down on the sofa, he doesn’t move away from his spot, doesn’t step foot into the room. “Do you want me to leave again?” Regulus asks tentatively.

James doesn’t say anything.

“Look, I can tell you don’t want me here. So I can just ... I can tell Sirius I checked on you and just leave again, if that’s better.”

Regulus is so close to giving up on an answer, to simply turn around and leave, silently cursing James out for making him come here and then proceeding to make his ribcage painfully shrink in on itself, when James finally moves. The smallest shake of his head. Just a little flinch to the side, that Regulus might even read as accidental, if James didn’t follow it up with a quiet, “Please stay.”

james, who very nearly has a fucking heart attack at the sight of his best friend’s younger brother when they go back to Hogwarts in september and then spends the next year of his life trying to woo him (he ends up just making a fool of himself time and time again but regulus falls for him anyway (don’t tell anyone, he’s in denial))

James and Sirius being boyfriend and girlfriend as really little kids because everyone said they should be and they’re in love and then when they get up and Sirius comes out as trans and they just grow people forget about that and just think James and Sirius are best friends because they are. They are best friends. But they also never broke up and they take that very seriously and they still have anaversaries and dates and stuff for years until Sirius gets to a place where he feels comfortable enough in his gender to finally have his second first kiss with James and everything and then a couple years after school everyone gets wedding invites to their wedding and thinks it’s a joke but it’s also near James’ birthday so they think it’s for that and then they get there and realise it’s a real wedding. And at their own wedding they have to tell people they’ve been together since they were seven how the hell did no one know that?!!

“Jamie?”

Instantly, James, who was laying on the end of Regulus’s bed, looked up and over to Regulus. “Yeah, baby?”

“Will you go down to lunch and see if they have any treacle tart left? I’m hungry,” Regulus asked, pouting just slightly.

It was as if the Gryffindor couldn’t move quick enough. “Of course! Be right back, love!” With a quick kiss to Regulus’s lips, he was gone.

Barty, on his own bed, snorted. “Wow. You have him well-trained.”

Dorcas, who was on the floor, sat up. “Trained?” she repeated, grimacing.

“‘Course. You gotta train whoever you’re with, Cas. Make sure you get what you need,” Barty replied, smirking.

It was only then that Evan, who was on his own bed, looked up. “Yeah, Barty?” he asked quizzically.

The way he asked made Barty’s heartbeat kickstart into double-time. “Yes,” he told his boyfriend, trying to keep a poker face. 

Silently, Evan closed his book and stood, walking so slowly towards Barty that the tension built to an unbearable amount. He only stopped when he was right by Barty’s bedside, towering over him, eyes boring into Barty’s very soul. Suddenly, Barty forgot how to think. How to breathe.

“What have you trained me to do, Barty?” Evan asked softly, leaning forward, head tilting slightly to the side.

“I…” Words? What were they?  Still, nobody in the room spoke or moved. Barty’s mouth was dry. And when had it gotten so hot?

Abruptly, Evan pulled back, turning and breaking eye contact. Then, he walked to his spot on the bed, he reclined again, before looking around. “Oh. I left my book near you. Barty, can you bring it here?” he asked innocently.

Bring Evan the book. That was his only job in life. Springing to his feet, Barty nearly tripped on his own sock in his eagerness to hand the novel over, before stepping back nervously. Merlin, Evan was perfect.

The laughter reminded him that Dorcas and Regulus were there. “Oh, somebody’s well-trained,” Dorcas chuckled, wiping tears of mirth from her eyes. “But I don’t think it’s the person you thought.”

Lily Evans would be the only person who understood Jegulus if James told everybody about it after it ended due to the war. I think he'd tell them because the urge to confess grew too strong and he just needed to let it out in the hopes it would make the anger and disappointment go away. So he spills and then 'causally' leaves the room and Lily is the only one to follow him.

Because she GETS it. And everyone else would likely tell her to avoid him because they didn't want her getting involved in 'his mess' because they thought it was his fault for picking such a terrible person, but she wouldn't listen. She doesn't want to comfort him, she just wants to talk and relate.

Because finally she has somebody she can talk to about her own experiences with a boy who said he would change and stay by her side but didn't. Finally she can talk to somebody who understands what it's like to cling onto the idea of someone when you realise your values are getting more and more distant. She knows what it's like to have to cut contact because he took it way too far. And not only is that how James is able to mature, it's how the two of them get closer. Because nobody else understands them. Whenever she tries to talk to her friends they get that silent look of pity in their eyes and she can't stand it; she's never been able to mourn her best friend because they keep reminding her of who he is now. Because they care about her but they don't UNDERSTAND why she's still hurt. And James understands that, and he begins to understand why Lily was so close to Severus, finally.

Lily could say she wished they still hung out all summer and James would finally understand what she meant. James could say he wanted one last hug and Lily would get it.

Fleamont and Euphemia moved to the UK as adults, so James grew up speaking mostly Punjabi at home, his parents never being particularly confident in their English skills and being much more comfortable speaking in their mother tongue.

So whilst he is fluent in English, occasionally he will forget a word or phrase and he will say it in Punjabi first. This happens a lot in first year especially, and again at the beginning of each school year as he adjusts after a summer barely speaking English.

The other marauders find this hilarious so over time it becomes a game for them where James will act out the word charades style for everyone to try to guess.

When Regulus moves in with the Potters and joins the group, he initially doesn't want to join in the game but very quickly becomes unbeatable.

Everyone just assumes that it's just one of those things he's good at because he's weirdly clever so they don't question it too much.

Until one day James overhears Regulus talking to Fleamont in fluent Punjabi and he realises he learned a whole language, just so that his parents can have one more person in their home that they can speak to in their own language.

That is the day James Potter starts to fall in love with Regulus Black
