You played the titular role in the NBC TV series Hannibal (2013-2015). I’ve spent some time with another Hannibal Lecter – Anthony Hopkins. His Hannibal was very different than yours. He focused on the power of Lecter, but yours is more mysterious. Was that a deliberate strategy?

It was deliberate in the sense that there was no way we’re gonna go down the paths of Anthony Hopkins. That would be creative suicide! I think he’s a masterful actor. I think what he did in the films was perfection! But obviously, we had a TV show on our hands. Every season, I had 13 hours where I could build up the character, create suspense, etc. We didn’t have to show all our cards in the first or the second episode. So, we could build it up very differently than he had a chance to do.

He has 14 minutes of screen time in The Silence of the Lambs, but he still makes such an enormous impact on us. There’s a lot on his plate, in that film. He has to show everything in those 14 minutes. I have 13 hours. So obviously, it’s going to be a different animal. And also, we wanted it to be believable that he could build up friendships and loyalty towards people. We couldn’t have him wink to the audience, we couldn’t have him do his thing in front of people, it had to be behind their backs. So, we had to wait until he got his private moments. And then slowly, slowly, he shows himself more and more to the people around him.

Hannibal wrapped up over seven years ago, after network NBC cited low ratings as a reason for cancellation, but that hasn't stopped fans from calling for a continuation.

The show's creator Bryan Fuller always has his fingers in a million different pies at once, but could a Hannibal revival be one of those things?

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy about his Shudder series Queer for Fear: The History of Queer Horror, Fuller talked about the continuing demand for more of Mads Mikkelsen's take on the famous chianti-loving serial killer.

"I think it’s wonderful that folks are still passionate about Hannibal, and certainly I am, and the cast is, and everyone would love to return if we had the opportunity," he said.

"And there’s something about, I think, that romance between Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter that speaks to people in a wide variety of ways, whether it’s just a problematic gaze or something a little more personal about self-discovery, or our own relationship to sexuality that the audience is still responding to.

"Also, I think the 'Fannibal' community has been so active and passionate, and not just for the show, but for each other, in a way that there are disparate people who share an affection for the show who found a community, and that community is what has sustained Hannibal, as opposed to Hannibal sustaining that community."

A lot of fans are hoping that Netflix revive the series, having successfully done the same for Lucifer, among other shows. The fact the streamer picked up all three seasons of the show has only fuelled those hopes and, according to Mikkelsen himself, possibly helped revival talks along.

"[Since the series] has found a new home on Netflix, the talks have been revitalised," he confirmed. "I don't think you'd find anyone that is part of the cast that is still alive that would say, 'No, thanks.'

"I think we all enjoyed it tremendously so we'd all go back and visit it again."
