Week 6 Blog Assignment
This week was about industrial design. I have discovered that industrial design isn’t what a lot of people think it is. I first thought industrial design was about building factories or something like that. What I actually discovered is that industrial design is about almost EVERYTHING that we use in our day to day lives. We may not even realize the small changes made to objects we take for granted. One huge industrial design invention that I found really awesome from the guest speaker is called Hövding, an invisible cyclist helmet.

I thought that this invention was awesome! I personally hate the way helmets feel/look when I wear them. Another awesome invention/improvement to a product is called, The Monolith. The Monolith is a long board with the first in-wheel motors. It has a chargeable battery that is easy removable and you can even charge your phone on it!!
Check it out!

Industrial design is definitely not what I originally thought it was.

Design Survey: Week 5 Assignment
“Design thinking begins with skills designers have learned over many decades in their quest to match human needs with available technical resources within the practical constraints of business” (14). I find it interesting that design starts with what someone has learned over decades. It takes decades for someone to first start thinking about how to design something that matches human needs. For me, it kind of deters me if I were a design student. I would not want to spend a huge chunk of my life figuring out how to start thinking about design. I get that it doesn’t take decades to actually start thinking about design, but in retrospect it still deters me. To strengthen this, the very next page Brown describes how long it took him to understand what being a designer and thinking like a designer, “Seven years of undergraduate and graduate education and fifteen years of professional practice” (15). That to me just yells no. I do like design but I would not go into design as a career. One thing about design that I find cool is that designs are super useful. “To help improve their professional woodworking machines” (16). Brown helped out a manufacturer by improving woodworking machines.
