The Detriment of a Pro-Hero Society
Also known as: Kids are kind of being brainwashed into being heroes, let’s look into that.
Dedicated to @deafmic for getting me back into this bullshit and inspiring me to finish something I had started noting out about two years ago. By now, I’m sure much of this has been said over time by various people, and it makes me happy to know that there are others out there who like to look deep into the background culture and settings of their favorite manga!
I apologize in advance if you notice an idea of yours here; I haven’t been active in the fandom in two-ish-years, so I may be restating some things you guys already have. I consider this rambling analysis to be free to use and abuse by anyone, no credit necessary! I only get a little bit of time on the weekends to really be on my PC, so if you send me an ask or reply to this, it may take me some time to reply back!
Anywho, onto this mess I’ve made. It’s not very tidy and is more a collection of thoughts than a properly detailed analysis, but I ain’t got all day. Again, this is messy but I don’t really have the energy to make it nice and neat.
Looking for something in specific? You might wanna ctrl+f around these titles, because this is very long and rambling.
Part I: The Beginning of Quirks and their Effect on Society Part II: What Makes a Villain Part III: M O N E Y and F A M E Part IV: Brainwashed Part V: Ignoring Those Who Need Help Part VI: Cycle/Conclusion

De-aged All Might fic but teenage Toshi was an asshole of a teenager. I mean one of those, “Try it again, see what happens,” types but still tips his waitress. Strategically plans every fight to be off-campus so he doesn’t get in trouble with UA. Saw a man grab a girl’s ass and rocked his shit. Doesn’t quite understand ‘talk it through’ and Nedzu works his ass off to show Toshi that fighting isn’t the only way to solve problems ( “It’s the most effective, sensei,” Toshi argues). Still became a hero to save people but whoopin villain ass is a definite plus.
Gets de-aged and immediately tries to beat Endeavor’s ass.
Sees Midoriya and first thought is: “babey. protect babey”
Probably around 18 y/o.

Does the BNHA universe ever license non-heroics-related Quirk use?
Like, could there be a Quirk-incorporating dance troupe? Could a professional window-washer get permission to use a flight Quirk on the job?
I don't remember any examples of this being seen, but it seems extremely stupid that there wouldn't be. (...I say that like it would be an argument against it.)

AU Prompt: The villains are heroes. Something bad happens and villains end up publically running japan. To be a hero is to be a terrorist, it's a death sentence. Still, there are people who try. Last bastions of a heroic society some 30 years gone. All Might, and the last dregs of UA are spread out across Japan, training anyone who even considers being a hero. Izuku wants, no, needs to be a hero. He has someone to save.
DFGFDDSCVx @north-peach
–History has a way of being rewritten by the victor. When Sensei (All for One) managed to slip his own agents into government positions without notice, it was the beginning of the end. When he started leaking false accusations for actual heroes, and setting up situations for his people to become the ‘hero’ the people looked up to…it was too late to stop it. It was a series of carefully manipulated laws, situations, and incidents that saw villains sitting in power. And as years passed, less and less believed the real heroes, less and less remembered the truth. Some were convinced of the lies instead.
–Izuku grew up running. Always running, because his mother had landed herself with the title ‘terrorist’ when he was seven, and the villains in charge noticed how smart he was. Noticed how he could break quirks down in moments, and was creative about how to use even the most simple of quirks for ‘hero’ work.
–schools are set up that way now. If teachers notice certain ‘children’ with abilities or quirks or anything they think would help their ‘heroes’ they are supposed to alert a higher authority who then assesses the information and chooses to pass it higher, which continues until someone high enough has their attention caught.
–Izuku makes it far enough up the chain that attention is brought to him. People in government suits show up at the Midoriya household, and they try to take Izuku. For a ‘training’ program, they swear.
–But Inko remembers. Inko was there for the Fall. She knows that will happen if she hands her child over now. She knows she’ll never see him again, that the villain-heroes will use him and toss him away. The fact that she remembers what Was is why Izuku wants to be a hero so badly- she used to tell him stories all the time.
-So when the agents come for her son, Inko retaliates. Three men die that day, inside her home, after she invited them in for tea and to ‘talk’ with a smile on her face. (the human body is made up of so many small objects, after all)
–Inko leaves the bodies where they are, sat on her couch and leaning back, like they’d just fallen asleep, nothing but the deep blooming bruises to hint at the internal bleeding she had caused pulling at their insides.
she rushes to get the two of them packed, made easier by the fact she has Go-Bags set and ready already. (She wasn’t stupid she knew this day would come. She had long been considered a ‘terrorist’ in this age, even before this incident, having been playing ‘vigilante’ for years, saving those that she could in this new age, hiding children and families, guiding them, and keeping them safe where she could. The Bakugous had helped her for just as long.)
–When Inko rushes out of her house, setting it alight, she leaves with the Bakugou family at her side (she would later find out that Mitsuki had been fielding her own ‘government visits’ for Katsuki as well. Her husband had been the one to deal with that- kind he may be, but he was a fiercely protective man that could sweat acid, even if he had to be creative with its use)
–So Izuku, Kacchan, and their parents had grown up running from place to place, silent heroes in places they could manage it, staying a step ahead of the government that would call them terrorists and see them ‘dealt with’. They’d grown up close as brothers, and swearing they were going to be real heroes no matter what.
–Over the years, the children and their parents come into contact with Aizawa, and through him the remains of UA. They come into contact with various runaways, and those that Inko had helped to hide or save previously. And they are saved in return. They are offered training, given contacts in the various cities they hop through, even though they’re young. The villains wont care about that after all.
–and the UA staff can see the potential in these boys, see the heroes that they would have become BEFORE. They are set to offer them a place in their ranks long before they reach an age that the teachers would feel comfortable teaching them what they need to know to survive the choice.
–And then their parents get taken, buying them time to get out.
–And it becomes not just a matter of ‘wanting’ to be a hero to fight the villains that have overtaken everything. It becomes a need
–Izuku is a sweet boy, And Katsuki is loud but not as brash and violent as cannon- he couldn’t be, in a life on the run where all they had for certain in the morning was each other. But both boys are determined and driven and so very smart.
–The Villains made a mistake, when they gave these boys a personal reason to fight them. A deeper, stronger reason for them to stand up and say “NO MORE”
–Izuku doesn’t meet All Might until after this, when he and Katsuki have been causing a Series of Very Unfortunate Events™ for those in charge, and causing stirs when they leak information All for One would REALLY rather not get out into the world he’s taken (taking) over thanks.
–Because these boys are smart, and working together, they can and WILL pick the world apart for their own, can and WILL dismantle centuries of work, absolutely will not hesitate to destroy everything the government of villains has worked for and built, even if it takes them YEARS.

BNHA Headcanons: Inko
She works as a pharmacy tech in a small, local hospital. She used to work as a nurse but moved to something with more standard hours so she could take better care of Izuku. Plus, she likes not having to watch so many people die.
Stress eats, 100%. She can’t help it, and it’s not like she has the time to exercise. She’s really self-conscious about her weight and feels like she isn’t pretty enough, or too old, to dress up and look nice. Izuku will cheerlead her to the ends of the earth when she does put on something nice though.
Has had a few ear piercings, though she only has the one in each ear now. When Izuku found out he felt like he had whiplash - his adorable mother?? With piercings???
She likes cooking but she loves baking. Sometimes she’ll use a cake as an excuse to visit UA for a bit. She’s convinced Izuku finds her embarrassing but he really doesn’t, he thinks she’s the greatest thing and will always brag about how cool his mum is to his friends.
She likes to sew and crochet. She was kind of forced to take up sewing so she could fix old clothes - money was even tighter when Izuku was young and she was still a nurse, Hizashi barely paying enough to cover half of the rent - but it eventually grew on her. She used to sew Izuku’s little All Might onesies herself. Shes honestly considering making one for Christmas, if just to embarrass her son a little.
Their little apartment is overflowing with colourful blankets with sweet little patterns on them. She has made one for each of Izuku’s friends and is moving on to his teachers. She can not be stopped.
If you enter her house, she is feeding you. You have no say in this. She will give you a weather-appropriate drink, unload half of the snacks in the house on you and set about grilling you on what your favourite meal is. Her cooking is to die for anyway, so it’s not like you should complain.
Smells distinctly like fabric softener, moisturiser, tea and powdered foundation. She also gives the very best hugs.
Hasn’t ever gone overseas before, but daydreams about taking Izuku on a big holiday with one of his friends. If Todoroki was aware of this he’d have stolen his father’s credit card in seconds.

I've always thought that it's more complicated than just "hero society creates its own villains because their quirks aren't accepted", as we've got a good amount of heroes with quirks that could be considered sinister - Vlad King, Thirteen, Hound Dog, Tokoyami, Mina, Shinsou (being told that your quirk is good for villainy still makes you accountable for your own choices), etc.
well, it probably IS more complicated than that - but its pretty clear at this point that society and how they go and treat these people plays a pretty big role in it.
(if none of this makes sense im sorry i just woke up sngbsjsks)
I’ll use Bakugou and Midoriya as another example - where these two were raised, they were probably regarded as normal children until Bakugou’s quirk came in and Midoriya’s didn’t. Bakugou was regarded as this prodigy, this child who had such a powerful quirk and was considered to be at the top just because of the strength of it, because to where they were raised, it was perfect for a hero. They intensified his already inflated ego, and allowed this child to turn around and almost do as he pleased.
Midoriya on the other hand was quirkless. Which seemingly is even worse than having a relatively weak quirk. He was seen as weak, as useless, a waste of space almost. He was bullied by most if not all of his classmates, and its pretty clear that no adult tried to step in to help - the teachers let the children do their own thing; and it probably runs especially for kids like Bakugou, who can make it into being a hero. No matter how hotheaded, brash or violent he comes off as.
Heroism in this series and their world seems to be entirely focused around the power of their quirk - Endeavor can also be included in this, although we have no idea how he actually was when he was younger/a child. But even he, later on in life, is shown to almost be…entitled. Endeavor is a grade-A asshole because of his quirk and the praise he gets for his pure prowess, which might be deserved on some levels…but his want and need for being number one caused him to ruin the lives of his own family. Heroism and its society caused him to ruin his family.
I suppose it could also depend on the specific places children were raised as well. Toga, for example, had certain urges due to the nature of her quirk. But instead of being helped properly, it appeared her parents just got her some form of quirk counselling because they wanted to hide those urges. Because it wasn’t ‘normal’…but that’d be considered pretty hypocritical, wouldn’t it? There’s plenty of weird quirks out there…I mean, there’s a kid who’s literally made out of some sort of slime, not to mention some kids we were introduced to in the first episode - a child with removable(?) eyeballs, and another who could just stretch his fingers. Toga’s quirk put fear into people - and we know Shouji was another character also feared, yet also present in the hero course.
We also know about Aizawa, who has a quirk thats mentally powerful - but because society and heroism deemed it not strong physically, he had to work twice as hard to get into the hero course. Here they had someone with a quirk that could stop quirks, a persons individuality…I wouldn’t be surprised if he was feared. Shinsou’s the exact same. He was feared due to his quirk being so mentally strong, but physically it couldn’t hold a candle to quirks like One For All. It also holds the possibility of being in villain hands, if Shinsou had been shunned enough to turn to the other side.
It’s a good reflection on today’s society in the real world, I think. People are extremely judgmental - if it be because of appearance, where you originated from, the way you act…you can see startling similarities in the ways some people are treated. Of course, villains and heroes alike are still very responsible for whatever choices they make - in saying this, I’m not saying that no villain should not be held accountable for any horrible things they’ve down.
It’s very possible for characters like Hound Dog, Mina, Thirteen, Tokoyami, Vlad King ect to have been treated very similar to the villains or other characters like Midoriya and Shinsou - however its hard to tell since we don’t yet know any backstory concerning these characters.
We know that UA tries to change kids like this for the better - much like how being in UA flipped Bakugou’s perspective of the world and the people around him (especially Midoriya) upside down, because he wasn’t the strongest, and he came to realize this very quickly.
It’s very much like a double-edged sword. And that’s also why I really liked it when Best Jeanist told Bakugou, ‘”heroes and villains are two sides of the same coin”…because that’s just it, isn’t it?
In the end, no matter how differently people are treated by those around them…in the end they’re all still human. But only seen for their power…
It’s caused the older generation of this world to believe the quirk individuality is what makes the person. When it shouldn’t be based off that. Hero society being as bad as it is, is a major plot point in the series itself, because its likely to get torn down and re-built.
It’s more complex than society…but the society itself is so big and so influential that it has a hand in the majority of issues we’re presented.

im trying to make a post about the hierarchy of UA and how the school works (ie: where teachers fall on the line of command and everything) and i’m having this slow, horrible realization that UA is a school led by a literal rat and his ragtag gang of completely unlicensed teachers
