In-depth research
Young person’s issues - mental health
-1 in 10 young people have a mental health diagnosis. This includes depression, anxiety and conduct disorder.
-Mental health issues are often a direct response to what happening in their lives.
-70% of children and young people who experience a mental health problem, have not had appropriate interventions at a sufficiently early age.
-Good mental health allows young people to develop the resilience to cope with whatever life throws at them and grow into well-rounded healthy adults.
-Surveys suggest that more young people have problems with their mental health today than 30 years ago, which is probably because of changes in the way we we then compared to now.

Environmental issues - Deforestation (Loss of habitat)
-According to NASA, the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere never rose above 300 parts per million in 650,000 years, until 1950. Since then it has risen regularly to over 400 parts per million, and continues to rise.
- This is why deforestation is a problem, as we need tress to consume carbon dioxide and emit oxygen.
-According to the United Nations, approximately 13 million hectares of forests continue to be lost each year, contributing up to 20 per cent of annual global greenhouse gas levels.
-Acording to Stephen Rumsey, "Emissions from human destruction of forests have been three times that of burning fossil fuels”
-Two major issues deforestation causes is displacing indigenous people, and interfering with biodiversity. And the main cause for it is agriculture.

Crime and society issues - Animal abuse/cruelty
-Puppy mills are large-scale commercial dog breeding operations Which tend to put greater priority on profits than the health of the puppies. Resulting in many dogs having illnesses like kidney or heart disease from the conditions they’re kept in.
- More than 50% the fur in the US comes from China, where millions of dogs and cats are often bled to death and skinned alive for their fur and Chinese fur is often mislabeled, so you’ll never be sure what fur you are wearing.
-It’s been estimated that there are 900 to 2,000 new cases every year of animal hoarding in the US, with 250,000 animals falling victim.
-The exotic pet trade is a multi-billion dollar industry in the US and while some wild pets are bred in captivity, many are taken from their native habitats. The stress of being violently removed from their homes causes a number to die prematurely.
-Based on the 1,423 U.S. cruelty cases on pet-abuse.com’s 2011, 70.1% of abuse involved dogs, 20.9% involved cats & 24.1% involved other animals.
-Over 115 million animals – mice, rats, dogs, cats, rabbits, monkeys, birds, among others – are killed in laboratory experiments worldwide for chemical, drug, food, and cosmetics testing every year.

Crime and society issues / environment issues - Animal poaching
-At the beginning of the 20th century there were a few million African elephants and approximately 100,000 Asian elephants. Today elephants are now considered endangered, there are about 450,000-700,000 African elephants and 35,000-40,000 Asian elephants.
-In 2012, 668 rhinos were poached in South Africa. As of January 2013 it increased to 946, these animals were being poached at a rate of 2 per day. Which was mainly because some countries believe that rhino horn is an important ingredient for many medicines.
-A 2010 United Nations report suggests that gorillas could disappear from large parts of the Congo Basin by the mid-2020s
-Since 1960, the black rhino population has decreased by 97.6% due to poaching
-In China, nearly 10,000 bears are kept in farms where they are regularly drained of bile (while alive) through devices implanted in the animals.
-In 2014, one of Kenya’s most beloved elephants, Satao, was shot with a poisoned arrow. The poachers waited for him to painfully die and then they cut off his face to harvest his ivory.

Composition layouts - Energy
I have made 3 designs for this composition layout. The first one I created using green squares, with a few larger than the others. I thought this could represent energy particles, as there is no set pattern and energy is fairly unpredictable, like the squares. My second design, is a ball of energy surrounded by energy circling round it. Finally, the last design is a more complex version of the 2nd, but has energy particles floating outside of it.

Composition layouts - Dominance
I chose white and black for the shapes in each creation as I felt that white is a surrendering colour, while using black to push dominance to the squares. Also black hint to pirates - as the squares overcrowd a possible surrenderer (Being the triangle). And red was used for the background to show the danger towards the triangle as the 4 squares are surrounding and dominating, as well as a nice contrasting effect between the 3 colours.

Composition layouts - Balance/symmetry
For this task I made 2 sets of 14 triangles, with the colouring of pink and mint green. I then placed the two lines of triangles together/slightly apart. This includes colour variating of the two similar designs.

Composition layouts - Bleed
I was unsure what to create for bleed, so I made a variety of ideas. The first two, with the colours ‘bleeding’ together (With various backgrounds). And the second one, with the circles ‘bleeding’ outside the border/page.
