Exhibition
Proposal
The exhibition is titled ‘Synthesis’, which is defined as the ‘combination of components or elements to form a connected whole.’ We felt this was an appropriate title for the exhibition because all our separate pieces of work are very different and individual however in the exhibition they join together to become a singular collection in that timescale.
The exhibition consists of a collection of five artist’s work, including one collaborative piece curated by two of the artists. The overall exhibition will consist of paintings, print work and instillation/ film work. The paintings are a series of record cover representations of individual albums and singles depicted by the artist’s interpretation. The multichannel instillation is a series of film work exploring the virtual world. The series of prints stem from the process of bacterial growth in controlled conditions. The final film work is a series of image work depicting the role of society.
As a whole it’s a non-theme led exhibition, each piece has its separate subject matter and a different focus’ allowing freedom both for the artists to present their works as they please in a space which is open and welcoming. In general, there isn’t a target audience who we are trying to capture the attention of, we want it to feel inviting and open to a range of people which is why we chose the location that we did.
The downstairs room will display the fixed pieces of artwork – paintings and prints. These will be displayed on the walls and also incorporating the fire place. Currently it is proposed that the paintings will be displayed on the fire place in the style of an instillation, there will also be a ‘crate’ on the floor which will be used to present the remaining paintings in the style of a record collection. The audience will be encouraged to look through the crate at the other paintings as well as swap and change the records on display on the fire place. The prints will be framed and will occupy the surrounding walls in a collective form. Upstairs the instillation pieces will be displayed on 3 separate TV screens, this is necessary not only for the theme of the work but also for the accessibility to the room itself. Due to the room being needed throughout the week for classes in the mornings we need to ensure that we can easily remove the work to suit the space’s needs. The last artist will also show a video on the second floor alongside a series of photographs shown digitally.
The style of the space allows access to the general public, it is a large open space downstairs as well as an open plan upstairs area. To advertise the exhibition, we have created event pages on our own personal social media accounts as well as made posters and flyers which will be distributed throughout the university campuses as well as around the city center. The venue itself are also advertising the events, including the opening (Sunday 30th April) on their own social media accounts (facebook, twitter and Instagram) and the café’s website.
The exhibition will begin on Sunday 30th April, which will be in the style of an opening afternoon. The exhibition will run for a period of six days, Sunday 30th April to Friday 5th May. On the Sunday we will be holding a public opening from 3pm until 5pm which is open to the general public throughout the afternoon.
The event will be held at Wayland’s Yard, a café in Worcester located near the train station. We chose this venue based on its location in town and also due to the style of the building itself. It is a Grade II listed Georgian townhouse which still has a lot of the building’s original features. The café is open every day from 10am to 5pm, meaning the presented artwork will be accessible to the public between these hours throughout the week. The work on the ground floor will be displayed throughout the week, as well as three screening events where the instillation pieces will be showcased from around 2pm till 4pm; these will be on Sunday 30th April, Tuesday 2nd May and Thursday 4th May.
Practicalities
The exhibition will run for a period of 6 days, from the 30th April to the 5th May. On the Sunday (30th April), there will be an opening event from 3pm to 5pm, where people are invited to come and view the artwork on display, as well as being given a brief introduction from each of the separate artists. Throughout the week there will be two additional screening afternoons, Tuesday 2nd May and Thursday 4th May. On these days, the instillation work will be accessible from 2pm till 4pm. All painting and print work will be displayed downstairs, where it can be viewed throughout the week. The space downstairs will be accessible to everyone however, the upstairs room can only be accessed via the stairs, which may limit the audience. In order to allow every one access to all aspects of the exhibition we will be filming the opening on Sunday and uploading it all to our social media accounts. This way the entire show will be available even after the exhibition is over. The café has public liability insurance which covers any damage caused to our work as well as if anyone was to be injured whilst our work is on display.
Although we have been granted full access to the exhibition space free of charge at Wayland’s Yard, we will be funding other aspects of the event ourselves. All equipment will be individually funded by the artists. We are organizing a budget with the manager so that we can provide drinks upon arrival during our opening afternoon (Sunday 30th April).
To facilitate the curation of the artwork, a range of equipment is required such as, three televisions. We are looking on various websites, who offer goods for little or no fee, to assist in gaining this equipment. Some of the work will require nails and shelves in order to be presented. The space itself is a busy public café, with staff and security cameras throughout the building; as a result, we do not deem it necessary to have constant invigilation across the week.
To promote our exhibition, we will be using a range of resources, such as producing flyers and posters to be distributed throughout the town center and University campuses. We will also be using social media platforms, including:
Our personal art blogs
Instagram
Facebook (in the form of an event)
Snapchat
Twitter
The café will also use their Instagram, Facebook and twitter pages to promote the event.
Above are two images showing our exhibition poster as well as the exhibition itself being promoted on the Wayland’s Yard Instagram Account which was also shared to their Facebook Page.

Prints
To present my prints in the exhibition I am currently getting quotes from different framers from where I live back home. It was recommended that I get them float framed so that the prints are displayed in the middle of the frame rather than stuck to the back of the bard. I want simple frames that display my prints clearly and smartly. The focus is on the prints - not the frames!

Exhibition Prints
I have chosen to use these eight prints in my exhibition at Wayland’s Yard in two weeks time. They range in sizes, from the 100mm diameter prints up to the larger 300mm prints. I have also chosen to include one of my original prints from my first set of plates and pints.

Exhibition
At the moment for the exhibition I am planning to display approximately 6 - 9 prints. I don’t want too many as I think they will then be viewed as a collection rather than as individual prints.
Currently, i think the smaller (100mm diameter) prints are the most effective because I feel they have the most detail and there is more pattern in these to experiment with colour and layering.

Currently, these are my strongest prints (in my opinion). The first three are 100mm in diameter and the last black and white print is 300mm in diameter.

Prints
I am happy with how my newest sets of prints have come out - I think I work better with colour than just black and white prints. I think this is due to the style of the work itself as well as the context of the pieces.

Tissue Paper Prints
The tissue paper prints shown in the first set of images were created by chance. The back of my etching plates pick up excess ink from the table when I ink up the etched sides. When the plates go through the printing press they are sat on the top of a sheet of tracing paper to protect the press from getting ink on it. These prints were a build up of ink from several prints going through the press to create individual prints. I had no intentional influence over what ink would be transferred onto the backs of the plates to make these prints so they are totally random, the only influence I had was when they were finished’ and I took them off the press.

Tissue Paper Prints
Above are a selection of images which were created alongside my print for the exhibition. They were produced from the excess ink which I hadn’t polished off from the bottom surface of my etching plates. They were a continuous build up of numerous plates adding more and more layers of ink in unique shapes and thicknesses.

Crit - 9/3/17
Over the past couple of weeks we’ve been having our semester two crits. I had my crit this morning. During my last crit I displayed my etched plates before I had started to press them and create my prints. Within this crit I showed my process prints as well as my original first prints, which were black and white and the red/orange ones. On the one wall I displayed 20 of my experimental prints and on the other wall I showed my original prints.
The experimental prints were described as being ‘repetitive’ prints of one another changing minor factors e.g. colours, rotations, layering etc. They were described as being tests and experiments of a process.
The theme of planets and stars was common, again, throughout the entire discussion during the crit. However, this time, the way in which they were ‘clustered’ across the wall was like a solar system.
Leading on from the idea of planets it was commented that how everyone has gone straight to the comparison of planets however all we are basing that on is the fact that they are circular objects, there is nothing but the basic shape that could possibly hint at them being planets.
It was interesting to hear what they thought about the rectangular outline from the plate which surrounds the circular print. It was commented that without this outline the prints would look more final rather than still looking like they are in the stages of process and experimentation.

Etching Plates
I liked how the different coloured inks looked when the plates had been through the press a number of times. The colours looked interesting against the metallic background.

Exhibition Proposal (personal)
After going again to view the space for our exhibition again I have been thinking a lot about the kin of prints I want to be showing for that specific site. Due to the style and colours of the room I feel my prints fit in well into that environment. However, I think I want to explore black and white prints again for the show based on the colour of the walls being fairly similar to those I have been using in my experimental prints.
However, If I frame my prints, without a boarder around them, then they may appear to be a part of the room itself rather than work hung on the walls. As if I have sectioned of parts of the wall causing the work and the room to interlink and become one object rather than separate components.

Exhibition Space
Sarah, Hanne & Kat and myself will be using the downstairs room to present our photographs, paintings and prints upon the walls. Sarah is planning to use the fire place to create a ‘bedroom’ set up to present her record albums whilst myself, Hanne and Kat will occupy the wall space to display our work.
Hanne and Kat will also be showing their video work upstairs alongside Alex’s work. Hanne and Kat are planning on presenting their’s through the style of old TV screens so that they are able to be transported easily out of the room when it is needed. Alex is, hopefully, using a screen or a laptop to display hers as we cannot physically attach anything to the walls in the upstairs room.

The images above show the areas in which I will be presenting my work. The far wall by the window has a large area of exposed brick work, and the large section of the wall nearest the door has an interesting covering of plaster and other materials. I am interested in these two locations for my work because the physical wall is ‘natural’ and so has a relationship to my work.

These are a selection of some of the photographs I took of the upstairs room. When the work is on display (especially on the Sunday) the yoga mats won’t be there!
