What To Do When You Know Your Ending but Have No Clue How to Get There

congrats. you’ve unlocked the most ✨ cursed ✨ form of storytelling: knowing the destination but having zero map, no snacks, and one emotionally unstable protagonist riding shotgun.

aka: you know how your book ends. maybe even the Last Line™. but the middle? the plot? the scenes required to get there?

welcome to liminal writing hell. here’s what to do about it:

🚨 STEP 1: Write the ending anyway.

yes. even if you’re only on chapter three. write the ending now. not perfectly. not canon. just get it down while it’s burning in your brain.

this does 2 things:

gets you emotionally invested in where you’re headed

gives you a north star to align your scenes to

future-you will thank you when you're knee-deep in act 2, spiraling, and you need to remember what this mess was for.

🧩 STEP 2: Backwards logic it like a feral detective.

ask: what has to happen right before this ending can exist? then ask that question again. and again. until you’ve accidentally built a whole reverse-outline.

like:

✨ final scene: heroine stabs the love interest to save the world → she needs to know he’s the villain → she needs to see him do something unforgivable → she needs a reason to be in the same room as him when it happens → she needs to go to the city where he’s hiding → she needs to choose betrayal over loyalty

now reverse those like breadcrumbs through the forest of chaos.

🎯 STEP 3: Identify your mid-point emotional switch.

the best middles aren’t just “stuff happening.” they’re a turning point. a reversal. a Big Choice. often it’s the opposite of the ending.

ending = character sacrifices love midpoint = character believes love will fix everything

this sets up contrast + emotional stakes. the midpoint shows how wrong they are. the ending proves how far they’ve come.

no midpoint? no tension. build the middle to break them, then rebuild toward the finale.

🧱 STEP 4: Stack up your themes like Jenga blocks.

what are you actually saying with this ending?

if the ending is: “freedom comes at a price” then the story needs to explore:

what freedom means

who pays that price

how people deny the cost

how your protagonist learns to accept it

if your middle scenes aren’t touching these ideas? they’re just filler. start weaving the theme early, subtly, and repeatedly. make it hurt a little.

📦 STEP 5: Write “junk scenes” in the blank spaces.

not sure how they get from castle to climax? write a fake scene. not canon. no pressure. just vibes. let the characters mess around in the setting. argue. kiss. kill. eat soup. whatever.

you’ll learn what they want, what secrets they’re hiding, what tensions spark.

some of these junk scenes will turn out to be real. others will guide you to what needs to happen next. use them as scaffolding.

🧃 STEP 6: Accept that messy = forward.

you won’t always see the whole road. write the next landmark. write the next mistake. write the next bad scene and figure out why it doesn’t work.

knowing your ending is a gift. the rest? that’s the part where you dig.

you don’t need a perfect bridge. you just need enough planks to get across without falling into the river of I’ll-Fix-It-Later.

now go. write the scene where everything breaks.

i think that Damian should be the only person in the family who can make Jason laugh. Jason thinks Damian is the funniest motherfucker in the family and absolutely nobody understands this until they accidentally listen in on the two casually chatting during patrol through the coms and realise that Damian is literally a supremely sarcastic thirteen year old with no chill whatsoever who has insane opinions on EVERYTHING, and the only reason they haven’t noticed before is because since coming to Gotham Damian’s been trying to establish himself as a Serious and Mature heir and so has been shutting his fucking mouth. Jason on the other hand? who was there in the league when there was a standoff between Ra’s and Damian about how Damian was slacking during training that ended when Ra’s said ‘if you cannot prove yourself as worthy of dedication to our cause then maybe other routes should be considered’ and the next day they couldn’t find Damian until Ra’s got a video call from him outside the Wayne Manor and he just said ‘dedication truly is an art form, grandfather’ and then he hung up and turned off his phone and they couldn’t contact him for months until Jason finally stopped laughing about it and went to Gotham to go check up on him? that Jason? Jason’s been fully aware that Damian’s one amusing tragedy from becoming a stand up comedian as a day job for years.

📢favorite thing about them in canon

That the moment you solidly prove to her that Takayuki is in the wrong, she turns straight around and wrecks shit all the way through Inazuma City to get at him. Immediate recalibration. Plus the fact that she kicked ass straight through her own people to get to him rather than... like... give false orders or even stop and talk them out. (Still wish Hoyo had shown at least some of it to us. I'd like to see her being badass on-screen.)

Very close second: the moment where she lets us go while rescuing the dude from prison because she's so disgusted about how he was treated.

🧨least favorite thing about them in canon

Being the near-constant narrative buttmonkey. After that off-screen badassness, gets put flat on the ground by La Signora--okay, fine, emphasizing the strength of the Harbinger. But then she gets strategically bodied by Kokomi in her SQ and loses the statue she really wanted twice over (once having it given away to the Traveler by her own beloved god!) in that one event. They got a little better with the most recent Mikawa Festival, where she at least gets one good scene, but still. Hoyo I am holding out an empty plate and begging for another scrap because that one was basically a crumb and it's already been devoured.

Also I think she could get a better archon, but her failgirl ardent devotion is one of the things I like about her in the first place, so. XD I can live with it (or write AUs).

As I said in the previous post, I'm very bad at remembering specific lines rather than vibes. XD;; I skimmed through the wiki, but I just can't bring it down to one line. Though when running around with her team I do enjoy this idle line:

First attack for ArtFight this year, I may have gotten carried away haha. Piece is for the legendary @vampyrhydes, creator of the Jentry Cheng AU.

From my description on ArtFight:

"I knew I wanted to something for Jentry Cheng but I wasn't quite sure what; then I got to thinking about how Diyu suppresses Jentry's powers and her first trip into the human world would be the equivalent of suddenly taking off training weights with powers that are extremely emotionally reactive. This probably isn't anything like how you imagined her and Kit first meeting, but I got a kick out of picturing him trying to yell at her because some of his friends almost got caught up in the fire only for her to immediately burst into tears, forcing a 404 error. (Ed and her got separated in the fire but he will find the worst possible moment to interrupt by jumping to conclusions and attacking Kit)"
