“November night. Brief note to self: Time to take myself in hand. To build into myself, to give myself backbone, however much I fail.”

SUBLIME CINEMA #254 - A CITY OF SADNESS
Hou Hsiao-hsien is the probably the greatest Taiwanese director, making films of vital importance to his culture. City of Sadness describes a part of Taiwanese history that is particularly harsh, about the absorption of Taiwan into Republic of China rule, the ‘white terror’ of martial law that lasted for decades - a hard thing for people outside of the country to to even imagine, so instead we have a film like this to give us a view into what was going on. It is a long, brooding film, but so intensely moving and well made that it was awarded the Golden Lion in Venice, and stands as Hsien’s best, most important film.

“Thus free to drown in sorrow of your own, may you sit in the shadows of our lost life, immersed in stillness, flanked by translucent hills, one a mountain coated immaculate and ringed at the throat with beads of cloud.”

one afternoon, she departed the first time
that moment looked devastating,
at that moment, God's promise was conceiveable
to fill empty nights and nights,
accompany along.
