We’ve finally arrived! And after spending almost 24 hours in airports, I’m very glad to be here. SO let’s rewind...
After almost 6 months of planning, stressing, excitement, crying, packing, etc., our flight was scheduled for Wednesday 30th of January. Four students from Swinburne Law School were to undertake a semester of legal studies at Universitas Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Myself, a freshly third-year student also completing a bachelor of Science, Elana, Harrison and Angus, also third year law students.
So our flight was scheduled for 4:40pm (thank god), and we gathered at the gate to say our teary* goodbyes (*mum cried, Zac didn’t but neither did I). Then that was it, off we went. Customs, security, waiting, security, waiting. Our first flight was to Singapore and, although it was 8 hours long, very comfortable. Kind flight attendants, great selection of entertainment, and unlimited Singapore Slings (thanks Singapore Airlines). I can never sleep on planes, but my favourite part of flying is having literally no responsibilities and therefore watching as many movies as I can fit in. I managed to get through Oceans 8 (loved), A Simple Favour (Anna Kendrick is a queen), half of Hotel Transylvania 3 (love a cruise ship but this was boring), and, much to my dismay and frustration, only until the climax of Bad Times at the El Royale before we had to land. I was hoping I could finish this gripping movie on our connecting flight but... we’ll get there.
So we arrived at Changi airport at about 9pm local time, but 1am Melbourne time. I had been to this airport many years ago on a layover to Japan, and it was just as amazing as my 15-year-old brain had remembered. Beautiful forest walls, spacious architecture, a train from one terminal to the other. This time there was even a cardboard replica of Hogsmeade from Harry Potter (wtf amazing). But our layover was about 10 hours so we decided to explore the city as well as it’s airport. One taxi later we were in Marina Bay, the gorgeous city centre. We made it to Level 33 just before closing for some more Singapore Slings ($30 AUD after tax, ouch). This is the worlds highest microbrewery, but the most impressive part was the view overlooking the city, narrated by Singapore expert and lover Angus. After the drink we headed back down to ground level, Angus almost got hit by a car trying to cross the road, and then, as tired and hot as we were, went for stroll around the bay with our suitcases in tow. We saw the famous Merlion, the boat-building (highest unsupported overhang or something, thanks Angus), Chinese New Year decorations, and inside a very impressive mall, with stores from Versace to Prada, and even an indoor canal with gondola rides. When we finally made it back to the airport we were exhausted and it was time for nuggets and a nap on the first piece of floor we could find.
After what felt like an eternity of half-awake-half-asleep floor napping it was finally time for our second flight. I had had an aisle seat on the first flight to avoid the ‘climbing over randoms to get to the bathroom’ scenario, but for this shorter flight I had booked a window seat for the view and instagrammable pics. So the plan was: charge my phone which was on 1% to take pictures and watch the rest of the movie I was half-way through. But as we boarded... no screens. First-world problem I know, new plan was to charge my phone and listen to podcasts. But then as I search the arm rests... no charging port to be seen. Was I going to have to sit through 2 and a half hours of just me and my thoughts? Seeing beautiful views from the plane window but with no ability to document them? Fear not friends, after consulting the in-flight information magazine I located a charging port way down under my seat. I remembered my new stupid phone only has one charging/headphone port so podcasts were out and I spent most of the flight admiring the views and playing solitaire. At least I had a seat free next to me so I could spread out a bit.
This is already too long and consists only of boring flight details so tune in next time for the actual arrival to Yogyakarta!
