Entry 7: Reflection on the subject with respect to your starting point, new learnings and experiences, and how this will assist you from a career development perspective
The transition to professional practice class was something I didn't expect I needed as much as I did. I came in as someone who thought I knew how to write a clean resume, cover letter and I didn't understand the importance of having an up-to-date LinkedIn. But I can now say that I have the tools that won't only set me up for my internships but for the rest of my life.
Tumblr media
LinkedIn posts.
I started the four weeks with an understanding of what the employers would be looking for when looking for the students to be their interns, I had the foundation down pat, but I just had to do a lot of cleaning up. I just had to learn how to get to the point and just make it a lot cleaner. Also making sure to have a resume that is clear to understand so they aren't looking all over the place. I was also able to learn what my skills are and what I can share when having my interviews for my internships.
Some of the experiences and opportunities I will take with me are the mock interviews, especially when we had to be matched up with people we were unfamiliar with. Here I was able to get more confident sharing how I can be an asset to any working environment. This taught me how important communication is, Communication, both verbal and non-verbal, affects every aspect of your professional life (Moore, 2018).
Speaking with Simone about how I can clean up my cover letter and resume, she gave me some important pointers. Also, when we went over our elevator pitch's I found it quite difficult to get the hang of at the start but not I can comfortably pitch myself to an interview and know exactly what to say, as it wasn't something i have practiced in the past so I'm looking forward to being able to show my elevator pitch during the internship interviews.
So overall my development as not only a student but an overall person moving into the internships, I believe has grown and i have gained a lot of skills that allow me to develop in my career looking forward.  This class has allowed me to gain personal skill and grow in confidence and that i can talk about myself to others, so this subject was not only one of my favourite classes but also one of the most important and i am grateful to be a part of it and can't wait to see what's next.

Entry 6- Critical reflection on your experience of and performance in your interview practices and assessment. How have you developed your technique? What do you need to focus on?
Throughout the transition to professional practice subject, we have made sure to go over ways to improve our interview skills, this is critical as it makes more confident during your interview and gives you better chance to get an offer for the internships.
Mock interviews were a great opportunity for you to become more familiar with interviews and get feedback, Powell et.al (2022) explained that, but they also say mock interviews are designed to learn new skills and demonstrate different assets and values a person may have. When you receive this feedback once you do your mock interviews it is important to take on the feedback and look for things you can improve on. A mock interview is a perfect way you can get more confidence and find out why you may have struggled in the past when getting to the interview stage.
Tumblr media
Here is the feedback I was given on my mock interviews.
I found it important not only to practice at Holmesglen, but also practicing at home so I had a wide range of different people's opinions, but also to help me memorise what I had to say to make myself sound as clear as I could. When speaking to my peers they stated something I needed to improve on was confidence, so I made sure to really memorise what I had to say and say it with confidence, but i also made sure to not use words I wasn't fully confident saying.
Something that was quite difficult to get the hang of, but I found was my biggest improvement was the ‘Tell me about yourself ‘question as it's not too often someone asks you to flex your muscles. Normally when someone ask you that question it's in a casual environment and not something your trained for, I learnt it was not only important to first name what you're doing for me the Bachelor of Sports media, but also why you do it so i had to explain why i got into sports media. At the start i had a lot of trouble with it and couldn't get it out but the mock interviews really helped me get the hang of it and i got it down pat and now can say it without any thought.
Something I'm now looking to improve on before I have proper internship interviews is going more in-depth with what led me up to where I am today because i feel like it is what sets me apart from others. Something else is not getting so nervous before my interviews and have more confidence in myself, because the interviewer can see when you are nervous, and you might not be able to give the answer you are going for.

Entry 5: The importance of organisational culture and being a high performing intern and team member.
Workplace culture is continually growing and becoming more important, with making sure that organisations values are being used. During my time at different workplaces and sporting organisations I have experienced firsthand the importance of having values and culture, seeing why you have to stick to them.
It is evident in sporting organisations all around the world, showing the importance of having a good organisational “culture” for example we see it now with the Melbourne Football club being labelled to have a bad culture, which can lead to loss of fans and more negative media coverage. Comparing this to the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team, who are renowned not only for their performance on the field but also for their strong emphasis on teamwork, discipline, humility, and respect. Which captures good media attention, and more people want to represent their culture.
Tumblr media
Organisational culture can be defined as “the ethical quality of a work environment, which is defined as the shared values, norms and beliefs that can stimulate ethical behavior” (Kaptein, 2008;Trevino & Weaver 2003, as cited in Huhtala & Felt, 2016, p 2). By Being a high performing team member and sticking to the organisations values and culture, could become detrimental for you securing more opportunities in the future. Through making sure you build strong relationships with partners; you could end up having numerous amounts of important contacts that have a positive opinion on you, even before starting your internship, that could come in handy at any point of time.
I have been fortunate enough to experience being a part of companies with a strong organisational culture. One being the AFL store, I was a retail assistant there and saw how it is crucial to have a smooth working relationship with your coworkers. This allowed me to work to the best of my ability as I was always looking to make my manager proud of the work I'm doing, something you might not produce if the organisational culture is not there.
I’m excited for the opportunity to step into a professional organisation with the internship coming up, here I will be able to get a better understanding of organisation culture in the sporting industry. I will be looking to be a highly reliable intern and team member. Even though it may only be for the little time I'm there, I am still going to be constantly trying to impress them and be a part of the team's values and culture.

Entry 4: Critical analysis of your internship applications relative to best practice using peer feedback.
To prepare better for my internship applications, it is important to get feedback from other members in the class or if needed even family members. According to a study (Rimer, 2007 as cited in Alziad, 2017, p.159),‘’ Peer assessment is used to enhance learning as an effective way to increase motivation for students by engaging them in the evaluation process which has received attention in recent years from several international universities’’.
For my critical analysis I had Lucas go over my Resume, Cover Letters and LinkedIn. I felt like it was important to have someone I was close enough to criticise it to make sure I held myself accountable for where I could improve. On my resume Lucas pointed out some areas I could improve on, one being condensing it down to from four pages to two, this is important as Frankel (2016, p.20) says that a resume has 10 seconds to impress the viewer, so it is important to be able to keep the resume well structured, attractive and clean, to make yourself the best opportunity to get the job. He said I was good at my formatting and made it easy to find everything, which is a great starting point.
Tumblr media
It is crucial for all three that you don't have any spelling or grammatical errors. This was something Lucas pointed out for me in my cover letters, just making sure to clean it up. The most important thing I changed in my cover letter was to make sure the fonts were all similar as you want it well-structured for the employer. Something he said I did well in was having the relevant contact details for myself in the top right corner this is critical so if they are looking to have you on board for their internship that they can correctly get back to you without any problems, because they can just move onto the next person if you don't get back to them on time.
LinkedIn is a valuable website to keep constantly up to date, this is for the employer to go online and see the products you have put out. At the time when Lucas looked at mine it was very up to date, as I only worked on it during my year 12 so it was quite outdated, so I made sure to update it with all the relevant information needed but also making sure it was nice and neat.

Entry 3 - The importance of personal marketing, branding and your unique value proposition.
As we are in our final year at holmesglen and we settle into the career we are going to do once uni is done, we are going to be asked who we are and what makes us stand out. To get a better understanding on how to answer their questions when it comes to interviews in either internships or job interviews, we need to realise how important our personal marketing is and also our brand is.
But first what is Personal marketing? In my opinion personal marketing is when we explain our strengths and our different skill sets to make ourselves stand out over others. I believe it is important because it allows us to get the upper hand on other people who may be running for the same opportunity's we are, it's a time we can finally flex our muscles and show how good we are, which is important when going for industry jobs.
My brand would be someone known for their passion and love for sport, who gets everyone involved and loves working in team environments. I also pride myself as someone who is respectful at all times, no matter the situation but also quite confident to the people I'm comfortable with, Some things in my brand i have to improve on is my confidence in myself as i have sometimes struggled with task in the past and started to lack in self-belief, but as of late I'm getting a lot better in that and starting to believe in myself a lot more, also public speaking has been quite the trouble for me for someone very confident, but I think it goes hand in hand with the self-belief so maybe that will come.
Social media is now important when looking at your personal brand, Isyanto et.al (2020) explained how branding within social media can connect the same way a personal brand can be shown as. Now when employers are looking you up online, they can find your social media platforms, so you must make sure it's professional, something I had to make sure to clean up as of late. But I am also trying to represent myself as a very outgoing and confident person, who displays personable and likeable characteristics, so it's important to try find a balance.
Tumblr media
Here is my instagram and making sure I have no inappropriate photos that might turn of employers.

Entry 2- Your preparedness for an internship.
Entry 2-Your preparedness for an internship: your skills (and skills gap), and the importance of a resume and cover letter with respect to the status of your own documents.
Going into 2024 something I have been looking forward to is the internship, for me I have always been a hands-on learner and the internship gives me an opportunity to have more industry experience and knuckle down what I want to do once I finish my time at university. My time at Holmesglen has taught me a lot of personal skills that are needed for applying for these internships and how to be successful when doing so.
One of the major things I have been taught about the industry of sports media, is making sure you have plenty of different of strengths in media roles, since finding out throughout my classes that I am more confident in social media and content creation, with one of my favourite task is podcasting which I'm looking to grow in and sharpen my skills in by making a podcast for this upcoming AFL season. But saying this I have realised that editing and writing are skills I must grow in and work a lot harder in, so I'm looking forward to improving on them.
Thanks to Holmesglen I have learnt the importance of having a well put together resume and cover letter, because it's not only the first thing the bosses and people trying to hire us for our internships will be looking at but it is also a way for us to show why they should give us a chance by showing them our industry work. Half (1994) also stated how important having a resume is stating “putting one together helps you focus upon who you are, the strengths and attributes you offer prospective employers, and your career goals in the accounting profession”. Resume and cover letters are also a way they will form an unbiased opinion on us, Having things such as a picture of ourselves, using friends and family as references and not proofreading them before it has been handed in and having spelling mistakes and errors in the resume and cover letter can leave a bad first impression and a chance to not get the job some of this stuff i have done in the past and might have led me to not putting my best foot forward when applying for jobs.
Tumblr media
This is why having both a professionally written cover letter and resume is so important when making a good first impression, even some jobs may require a certain criterion to even be looked at for the job. A good way to be able to show your past experiences is having a portfolio to show your previous experience and work you have done.

Entry 1: About Me page
Entry 1: About Me page including: a brief on your background, sport interests, work experiences and career ambitions. In addition: a reflection on your study performance to date and areas to improve; expectations and aspirations for this subject and your internship.
My name is Jack McDornan, I am 21 years old and currently living in Wantrina south. I have a family of 5 which includes two siblings, my sisters Meg and Abby with me being the middle child, currently living with my mum.
Growing up I always had a love for sport with some of my earliest memories are attending the AFL or watching it on TV. Being a passionate Brisbane Lions fan has taught me resilience, but it has always been able to give me joy through the darkest moments. I started my schooling journey at Laburnum Primary School in Blackburn and was quick to realise school wasn't for me and often found myself relating my schooling towards the footy, which was often turned down by my teachers.
Tumblr media
As I got older I continued to lean towards sports rather than my schooling finding love in other sports such as cricket, basketball and now the UFC, this led me to struggle with schooling in my higher education at Vermont Secondary college where I was quick to fall behind which led to me moving to a more hands on education at SEDA college which I found the type of learning for me. Combining my love for sports and school was exactly what I needed. With help from my year 12 teacher Josh Newman i finally found love for schooling.
After finishing year 12 I was unable to enroll into the course i wanted to due to not doing VCE which was the bachelor of sports media, so I decided to take on a diploma of sport and business at the Collingwood football club which was the inaugural year of the course.
Throughout this diploma I was lucky enough to Volunteering at the Collingwood, which led me to have a lot of industry access. After receiving my diploma i was able to enroll in Holmesglens bachelor of sport media, which at the start I found quite difficult due to my lack of doing essays and meeting deadlines due to my more hands-on study at SEDA. But with hard work I was able to get the hang of it. Something I'm looking forward to is the internship due to the fact I'm more of a hands-on learner, with the aspirations to do something in the space of sports media organisation content creation or social media.

week 9- Edit your video interview down to a three-minute video adding relevant lower third graphics and video overlay. Re-encode the same video ready for sharing on TikTok, Instagram and YouTub
while editing the three minute video, I learnt a wide range of different skills I learnt how put images onto a video which will come up handy while editing videos into the future, I also learnt how to put text onto the video. I was quite the amateur going into this and now keen to continue to use the software going into the future.
Making short videos will help Whitefriars into the future as we see the growth of short concept videos if that on TikTok, Instagram and even Youtube its the new way to get revenue as its growing more and more. People don't have the attention span to watch long videos of interviews now we will see highlights of the key points and this is the perfect way to do so .
This can help Fan get a quick inside of what been going on but as they are fans they only want to know the important bits so we see why people shorten them, you don't have to only do this with interviews you can do this with game highlights and training sessions.

Week 3 – Design a gameday publication for your partner club, to include team lists, game preview, a feature article or player Q&A and sponsors’ logo page.
https://www.canva.com/design/DAFjCmO6d3w/H5KIaU8ifyhUt7P6fajZTA/view?utm_content=DAFjCmO6d3w&utm_campaign=designshare&utm_medium=link&utm_source=publishsharelink
When making the gamely publication for Whitefriars I learnt how important it is for the club to get there sponsors involved in what ever they put out because they pay there money to be involved in the sporting organisation so its important to repay them in anyway we can and putting a sponsor logo page is the perfect way to do so, I also learnt how to use idesign but as the application kept crashing had to move it onto canva.
The purpose the gameday publication serves to Whitefriars from a business performance perspective is that it gives access to what's going on at the club and the sponsors that are helping the club succeed. it will help bring in new partners as they prove to show that they are proudly shown as the sponsors of the Whitefriars football club.
Gameday publication helps the fan experience as they can get a behind the scene access to what's going on in the club with such things as Q&A and feature articles on your favourite player and will also help the fans understand the players more and then will lead to more fan engagement, it will also help extremely when you have the team sheets getting posted up before the game on the publication so they know who's playing while they watch with the numbers next to it so they can point out the players.

Week 2 – Design three marketing graphic templates to be used by your partner club for social media post
When designing three graphic templates that could be used for Whitefriars i made sure I had three different designs one for a function coming up , one for a game day and then one for a full time result so that could see a theme of using the club colours so the social media pages can have a clean look to it.
Some technical skills I learnt was how you can actually make post on canva so its there right dimensions which comes in handy when posting for your partner club so they can post straight from the canva edit.
It will help the club have clean edits on there social media pages which will help  have more of a professional feel and not look messy when someone is looking to join the organisation whether that a new player or a coach they want something they could show there peers and be proud off.
It would also help the fans understand what's going on the weekend and the results of the game not just your average post of a player then a caption, this can be something they can repost on there story's and get that professional club feel like how clubs in the AFL do so and they get repost and re-shares that brings in more eyes to the football club which will lead to on-field success.

Essendon Footballer Sam Draper used social media to promote his upcoming Movermber campaign, using Instagram reels to show a video of him explaining what cause he will be raising money for and showing him shaving his moustache off. This post has plenty of positive interactions with people saying they are proud of what Draper is doing and how he is doing it for a great cause, this is a great way for someone to promote something they are doing and is a great image for an athlete to do something to raise money and proving that social media is a great tool to do so.

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is the name given to a group of diseases in which the nerve cells (neurons) controlling the muscles that enable us to move around, speak, swallow and breathe and will eventually lead to death. Fight MND is an organisation created by Neale Daniher who is currently fighting the deadly disease, Fight MND use social media to promote their organisation to people who will donate to the cause, others who are with the disease and loved ones of the people battling. They always get good interactions but especially when it’s the queen's birthday round for the AFL because they do the slide for MND. This is an amazing example of how social media can help grow campaigns, which will only help organisations.

Social Media- Week 6
The Brisbane Lions used Instagram to promote their upcoming finals series for 2022, they were able to show what their new slogan will be which they named it “all in”, this involves the organisation, the athletes and the sponsors. The Lions were clever when posting this as they used jerseys from Home and away games so it has the sponsors from both jerseys allowing social media access to help their sponsors which will lead to the organisation gaining more revenue, which will only help the club out. This was engaged with by all the lion's fans as they were excited for the upcoming finals series, I believe it was good way to gain engagement but also by also allowing the sponsors to get what they pay for.

Social Media- Week 5
The NBA store, a worldwide sporting apparel store with over half a million Instagram followers, has its main agenda to promote their products to fans around the world, this includes NBA Jerseys, shorts, t-shirts and accessories, this post by the NBA store was wishing Kevin Durant happy birthday by showing him in the jersey with a link to buy it then another slide showing just the jersey by itself, this is a very clever way because its showing how you can concur two things with one post saying happy birthday to one of the best NBA players but also trying to sell products. This post had average engagement considering how many followers they do have. The main tools they use to gain customer engagement is using a famous figure, also having a shopping link put onto it to make it easier to get to the jersey they are looking to buy. This post shows using a famous figure is a great way to gain revenue and click onto a post.
