vista = a view, especially a beautiful view from a high position; a possible future action or event that you can imagine
verbatim = in a way that uses exactly the same words as were originally used
rejoinder = a quick and often angry or humorous answer
staid = serious, boring, and slightly old-fashioned
erroneous = wrong or false
to surmount = to deal successfully with a difficulty or problem; to be on top of something tall
pulpy = feeling or looking like a soft wet mass, often with fibres (= thin threads) in it

striation = a long, thin line, mark, or strip of colour
