Edited (lightroom only)
I wanted it to look dramatic with the sharp contrasts. It's in black and white to achieve this effect and invoke more emotion; especially as the colour of the original photos were very soft and warm so a big change in contrast was my way of creating the emotion

Week 10 photoshoot
I think I got some interesting photos and I'm excited to play around with it in post. Some pros and cons from this photoshoot:
Pros: We did it in doors at my mates house so it was a lot more comfortable and we didn't have to worry about external interruptions and challenges such as random people trying to steal our stuff like last time or the battery in the camera/light dying. Additionally I found clothespins to hold the fabric so I didn't need someone at the back holding down the sheet this time which allowed for more interesting angles.
Cons: We weren't allowed to do the smoke as my friend was concerned about it being sprayed indoors. I tried convincing him otherwise but as it was his place I wanted to respect his choices. Additionally I had to borrow another friend to hold the light for me as when I borrowed the equipment I was on my bike and couldn't carry the large stand

Week 10
In class critique and feed back - Peer group
I got feedback that I chose the strongest images which was really good to hear. Some useful feedback I got was that in most of the photos; but especially 2 of the photos the text isn't really legible and one of the subjects was blending into the background

Week 9 Contact sheet
Contact sheet:
TBC - Marked and explanation on why I chose them
Top Photos:
Photo shoot , challenges.
Time constraints
Smoke can was cold
Almost got jumped by homeless person
Anti homeless blaring alarm/ high pitched noise
The phone booth was fixed
Parking in the city
Cleaned up graffiti up stairs aswell
Silk got scrunched very easily especially after the fabric was humid after being over a person
The graffiti would get smoked out by the smoke when the light was shining. It was hard to have both the graffiti and the smoke showing
The smoke stream was very strong and didn’t have much control. I played with direction and how far to hold the can. Otherwise spraying in bursts or holding depending on what effect i wanted.
^Sites being cleaned up
What to do next week/during the week
Add in text for the photos/ further editing and layout of potential board series.
Very strong campaign shown to us in class. Features pictures of microplastics that appear to be a galaxy with a bold reeling line/statement. I want to try do something similar in mine
Own experimentation
I asked chatGPT what are some strong statistics about pollution to invoke emotion
This is where i got my 1/6 statistics

Week 8
Experimentation
Basically waterboarded the bro, put a sheet cover over him and went into a park with a strong light. Worked out well as sunset is at light 5:30 so it got dark real quick.
Editing black and white and added off white kinda effects to make it seem more mysterious, rustic, and how pollution kind of makes everything more dirty, personal feeling. Sheet over face to make bro seem like he cant breathe aka pollution also relating to the colour balance
Next steps: I want to add text, edit smoke into the photo, another photoshoot that has better lighting and alter the camera settings that make the photo clearer.
Ideas: suffocation ; loss of identity from urbanization ; protective gear i.e. motif of mask
Challenges i faced: the bedsheet being too thick, the time i took the photos around 5ish was around sunset and i had to constantly change the settings, and so the photos i got were very inconsistent, and some were blurry/shaky. Also i was pouring water over the bro while someone else was pulling a sheet back and flashing a flashlight into his face which was very uncomfortable for him. Additionally I didn't have a light which I could freely move around which limited the amount of lighting choices I had
Week 8 in class
Begin by writing in a Word doc for your blog: what are the 3 main challenges you are currently facing in your project, along with your current plan to address these 3 challenges? These reflections will also be used in your one-to-one meetings with your lecturer and informal group critiques with your classmates. Use these thoughts and plans as a starting point for discussion.
3 Challenges
Finding a way to capture pollution or the concept of the negative aspects of pollution in a photograph. Thinking of fog machines, a vapes but don’t have either
Change in direction. When the class first started I was pretty set on a graffiti urban set of photographs, but then as I progressed I realised that the subject I chose didn’t relate. I was stubborn and tried to stick with my idea until almost the formative and only then I fully grasped that my idea was not it.
Finding someone keen to help out. All my friends are in their 3rd year as well and getting swamped by assessments. It’s hard to find someone keen to go out and take photos for a few hours in the dark.
HM: Personal procrastination.
Challenge 1) Post production editing experimenting with smoke
Challenge 2)
The goal is to begin problem-solving at least one central aspect of your campaign/project in class time. This may be in response to verbal feedback or an area you have identified you need to work on.
You may also select one skills aspect of the brief that you wish to advance, for example:
studio lighting practice (book studio ahead of time);
DSLR camera testing (test trials to learn a new way to use your camera to suit your shoot);
location lighting tests (take lights to a location – book these ahead of time);
location finding (go to locations to test compositions, light, etc);
test props or materials photographically;
lens and focal length testing (undertake a series of tests to work out optimum focal length etc. for a particular controlled shoot);
developing or scanning analogue film;
printing in the darkroom;
post-production for inkjet printing (book computer ahead of time in inkjet lab);
book-making tests;
Intro to inkjet printing;
Further in class experimentation:
quick mock up
LED Light panel set.
Borrow a piece of fabric
Stats of most heavily polluted cities in the world and stats of the particulates in the air
Shock factor
Studio test was really good. Lighting and setup all tested. Now future testing will use different cloths and lighting panel
I bought a piece of silk 90x90 for less than $20 as it was an off-cut at Wah Lee near hobson street.
Looked at facebook marketplace for fog machines, can borrow one for 20$ but needs a power source.
Natalie sent me an email showing canned atmosphere aerosol which seems to fit my purpose. It’s on sale as well for 23$ and in Mt Eden so I will definitely check it out
I’m also struggling to rent a light from the AUT space as there’s something wrong with my account. Looking to go to IT and fix it
Site searching: there's a place with graffiti outside wah lee which would be nice at night time. Otherwise the phone booth at princess street could be nice as well. Next to after 6 moto the abandoned car park
Want to look at dirty-grungey places. Where could I go?
Abandoned buildings?

Week 6
This was a practice led session where students go out taking picture, or the ones that didn't have a great presentation go back and talk with Natalie.
I was sick this week.
I had reflected on what I wanted to do and pivoted my subject into Pollution; more in the case of how people are in a chokehold and being suffocated figuratively and literally.
New theme: Pollution in the world is destroying my paradise. Focus on smoke and smog, and the people behind it in the suits that create it.

I did the pitch in class.
My feedback wasn't that useful because I know personally I hadn't done much work and the topic I chose wasn't something that I was really invested into.

Week 4 in class
Vertical lines , diagonal lines, light and dark, tonal range, rule of thirds, etc
Analysing art breath, mandy baker:
Their pitch was to show pollution in the ocean, plastics debris, with the use of galaxy like compositions, almost overwhelming the audience with the sheer number of “trash” in our ocean
Stunning image, that draws you in and then has a challenging phrase and shows u how to fix it
Campaigning to push more free creative spaces for artist to express themselves. This will reduce people from graffiti private places and let people express themselves legally.
Blue marble:
In the 1960's people started having an environmental change. Someone's lapel pins changed nasa’s mind to change the trajectory of apollo 17 so they could capture a whole photo of the earth.
This had hoped to change the environmental change to people and how they approach taking care of the earth. But then people from the ironblood community in new jersey, it doesn’t matter for them. They live with sewage, garbage and all that so the blue marble photo doesn’t matter to them, being shown matters more.
Trains in new york is ok to get graffiti. Look at graffiti in urban areas.
Paradise in an urban environment
Sounds more like a happy place instead of paradise
Beautification of urban area through community.
