Chakaia Booker Empty Seat, 2006
Tumblr media
Like much of Booker's other work featured at this exhibit, Empty Seat was made primarily with rubber tires. As such, the only color at work here is black. It weighs over 900 pounds, which I think does a great job on emphasizing it's presence. The sculpture gives off a sense of dynamism and movement, due to the tendrils that spill out and fold in on themselves. With the rendrils bending and folding in, it creates a sense of unity, not just with sculpture, but with Booker's other works, specifically her paintings. Booker is able to merge ecological concerns with racial and economic difference. The varied tones of the rubber represent human diversity, and the wear on the tires could symbolize human aging. I think at first it's hard to understand what Booker's sculptures are trying to symbolize, but after reading up on her more, you're able to look at the sculptures with a new perspective. Each tendril has it's place and serves a purpose, and unites with everything else to create an enviornmental message.

Virtual Sketchbook 2
Unity is how individual parts work together to make one large piece. It creates a sense of wholeness because it uses elements that have some similarties, and placing them that creates a feeling of completion. Variety is sort of the opposite to this, as it uses contrasting elements to create something.
Tumblr media
Balance in design is how elements are weighed against each other to create a complete design. It is the positioning and proportion of elements and how they influence other elements, and the overall piece.
Tumblr media
Emphasis is used to underscore and draw attention to certain elements of a composition. Subordination works with emphasis as it's there to remove attention from a certain area, and move attention to the area of emphasis.
Tumblr media
Directional forces are there to lead a viewer through a composition, which keeps the viewer engaged with the art.
Tumblr media
Repition is using two or more elements that are similar, such as shapes, lines, or color. Rhythm uses these repeated elements to create movement or flow.
Tumblr media
Scale is the size of an element in relation to another element or even reference point, such as the page/screen the art is on. Proportion is the ratio of an element to the whole composition.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Dawn Marie Jingagian's Shy Glance art uses reptition with the streaks of paint next to the emphasis of the art, which is the eye. The composition uses alot curves. The different shades of brown in the background serve as a stark contrast to the bright composition of the face/eye.
Color has affected my life through many ways. I have certain color preferences, mainly purple and red, and this influences certain things I may buy, such as clothes. Bright and warm colors are associated with energy and happiness, while more relaxed and cool colors are related with sootheness and calmness. Color also plays a role in our cultures. In the West, black is associated with things such as death and sorrow.

My assignment was to make a post on good and bad digital layout design This is an example of a bad layout, due to the signs conveying a large amount of information in one small area.
Tumblr media
A an example of a good layout would be Nikki Sylianteng's parking sign. This design works well because it is user-centered. Drivers simply need to know whether they can park at a spot or not, and the sign does just that.
Tumblr media
To me, what makes a good layout design is something that is user friendly, by making it easy to navigate or easy to understand. The purpose of a good layout design is to convey a message in a way that's appealing visually and logically. Nikki's sign is an example of a good layout because it makes use of visuals instead of text to convey a message. With just a glance, people can see what they need to.

Self Portrait
I am a 20 year old white male from Sarasota, Florida. I have many things that I like to do for fun, such as my martial arts, which I take great pride in. I also enjoy the sport of rowing, or doing anything that involves being out by the water. I've also recently found that I enjoy golfing, so I've been getting more into that as well. For something more relaxed, I like to build model kits of Gundam, giant robots, which are called Gunpla. One of my biggest fascinations since I was a kid have been giant robots, ever since my parents got me dvds of the original transformers show to watch.

This is a belt rack my father and I made to display my Taekwondo belts that I've earned. All we used to create it was a few plants of wood to piece it together. This is important to me because it represents my journey through martial arts, which has been a big part of my life. I think this is why it's beautiful in a sense, as it shows how far I have come, and how much more I can go.

Introduction/First Artwork
1. Hello, my name is Jack Stovall and I am a third degree black belt in Taekwondo.
2. #17, James Hampton 1950-1964 "Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations' Millenium General Assembly".
This piece was created over a span of 14 years
It was made based on religious visions that prompted him to prepare for Christ's return to Earth.
Much of this piece was made with cardboard and plastic, but also old furniture and light bulbs for some parts.
Hampton passed away before he could complete his art.
James Hampton had had multiple visions where he claims to have been visited by religious figures, such as Moses, and Adam and Eve.
3. When I saw Hampton's art for the first time, it surprised me to learn that he was made from discarded items, cardboard, and plastic. My view has changed after looking into it more, as I now understand the religious significance of this piece. Looking at it again. I saw the phrase "Fear Not" on top of one of the thrones, summarizing his project's message. Hampton's project is an embodiment of his personal faith that salvation is coming.
