Designing for the Next Site: How Our Second Putting Green Is Taking Shape

Back with another update on our putting green journey. With the first site now fully settled in and well-used, we’ve moved on to planning the next one, and the second time around feels a lot smoother.

We’re applying everything we learned from the first install, tweaking a few things, and making space for new ideas. This next location presents a different kind of challenge, which has actually made the design phase more interesting. You’d be surprised how much site layout, sun exposure, and staff flow influence how a space ends up being used.

So, I thought I’d share where we’re at with site two, what we’re changing, what we’re keeping, and how this new putting green is shaping up to be even better than the first.

Reassessing the Space Before the Spade Hits the Ground

Unlike our first site, which was a flat, unused back lawn, the second property has a more prominent, visible green space right off the main walkway. That changes the whole dynamic. It’s not hidden away, it’s in plain view. So this one has to not only be functional, but look sharp from day one.

We also had to factor in:

A slight slope across the area

Foot traffic from two different entry points

Limited natural shade

An existing garden border we wanted to preserve

This time, instead of working the design around the turf, we approached it with a more holistic landscape design services mindset. We asked how staff will move through this area, where people naturally want to pause or gather, and where seating would feel natural.

That shift in thinking has already changed the layout for the better.

Top Improvements We’re Making Based on Site One

We had a solid foundation to work from thanks to the success of our first install, but we also saw a few things we could do better. Here’s what we’ve changed in the second design:

Built-In Shade from Day One

Instead of adding umbrellas later, we’ve designed shade into the plan upfront. We’re incorporating a covered seating structure with bench seating and climbing plants. It is both functional and visually softens the surrounding space.

Smarter Access Paths

Rather than a single pathway, this time we’re adding two. One will come from the staff carpark and another from the main entrance. That will keep flow natural and reduce turf wear over time.

Integrated Storage

We’ve planned for a small, lockable gear box built into one of the shaded benches to store putters and golf balls. It’s a small detail, but it keeps the area tidy and makes it easy for people to use without creating clutter.

Better Drainage Planning

With a sloped area, water runoff needed a closer look. We’ve worked in a slight contour to direct flow away from the green, with added layers of crushed rock beneath the turf to support drainage. These kinds of details make synthetic lawn solutions perform well over time, especially with New Zealand’s changeable weather.

Design Features We’re Keeping from Site One

Some things just worked the first time, and we’re sticking with them:

A simple three-hole golf turf surface that balances fun and usability

Native planting around the perimeter to keep maintenance low

We’re still aiming for an inviting and useful outdoor recreational space, one that doesn’t feel overly engineered but still has everything it needs to function well.

One of the best things we did in the last round was casually involve staff during the planning phase. This time, we’ve done the same, and the ideas have been spot-on.

Some suggestions we’ve included:

A couple of standing-height tables for leaning or working outdoors

A second bin closer to the seating area

A wall-mounted whiteboard nearby for spontaneous team challenges or scorekeeping

These are the little touches that turn a space from “nice” into something that’s actually used.

Why It’s All Easier This Time Around

Having gone through the first project already, this second one hasn’t felt nearly as daunting. We’ve got:

A template of tasks and timelines to guide the rollout

More confidence in what to expect during the install

A clearer view of what matters and what doesn’t

The first green taught us a lot about project scope, expectations, and staff behaviour. Now we’re not guessing, we’re adjusting.

Still Room to Improve

That said, no two sites are the same. This location is more public, which means:

We need to think harder about how it looks from a distance

Vandalism risk is slightly higher. We’ve planned a CCTV angle to keep an eye on it

Turf wear could be greater due to higher foot traffic

So we’re working closely with facilities to make sure ongoing maintenance is mapped out properly, even though the upkeep will still be minimal compared to traditional lawns.

What’s Next?

The install is pencilled in for later this month, and we’re ahead of schedule so far. Once it’s in, I’ll be back with another update, probably one of those boots-on-the-ground posts like I did for site one.

I’m genuinely looking forward to seeing how this space gets used. With more visibility and easier access, I suspect it will become a bit of a central spot, not just a place to sneak in a lunchtime putt.

Settling the Real vs. Artificial Grass Debate—And Why We’re Going with Putting Greens

I’m back with another update on the big property upgrades we’re rolling out across our sites. Last time, I chatted about my initial dilemma over whether to keep our lawns as is or switch to something more low-maintenance, like artificial grass landscaping. 

Well, I’ve done a fair bit of digging since then, and I think we’ve finally come to a decision—drumroll, please—it’s putting greens!

But before I get ahead of myself, let me walk you through what I learned comparing real grass to synthetic lawn solutions. First off, real grass has that classic Kiwi feel. Nothing beats the smell of freshly cut blades on a sunny morning, right? It’s also a natural habitat for our local birds and insects, which is a plus.

But the upkeep can be a bit of a mission. There’s watering, fertilising, mowing—you name it. And when you’re dealing with multiple properties nationwide, the cost and time really start adding up.

On the flip side, I discovered that golf turf surfaces (like artificial putting greens) can provide a lush, green look all year round. You don’t have to fuss over irrigation systems or worry about pesky weeds, and the overall maintenance is a breeze compared to real grass.

The initial turf installation process is a bit more involved—removing the old surface, preparing the base, and then laying the synthetic material—but once it’s done, you’re pretty much set for years. For someone like me who’s juggling multiple projects, having less to maintain sounds like a real game-changer.

If all goes well, we’ll be kicking off the first batch of landscape construction pretty soon. It’s exciting to think that soon we’ll have outdoor entertainment areas that are both functional and easy on the eye. No more fretting over wilting patches in the heat of summer or muddy bogs after heavy rain. Just smooth, consistent surfaces that staff and clients can enjoy year-round.

I’ll keep you posted on how the install goes and whether this move truly delivers in the long run. But for now, I’m feeling chuffed about settling on artificial putting greens for our properties.

Diving into a New Project And We’re Debating Which We Should Get—Real or Artificial Grass

I thought I’d give this blogging business a go to share a bit about my day-to-day as a procurement officer here in New Zealand. 

Picture this: juggling quotes, comparing proposals, and trying not to lose the plot when a supplier throws a spanner in the works. In other words, it's never a dull moment.

And something big dropped on my lap!

This week, my higher-ups gave me a new project that’s quite the whopper: upgrading several of our company’s existing properties. We’re talking building renovations, refreshed interiors—the whole shebang. But I reckon the biggest talking point so far has been the lawns. 

We’ve got loads of outdoor recreational spaces we want to revamp and turn into something that’s both functional and easy to maintain. The big debate at the moment? Whether to stick to natural grass or opt for artificial putting greens.

Now, before you raise an eyebrow, the idea of artificial grass landscaping isn’t so far-fetched. We’ve been hearing a lot about synthetic lawn solutions from colleagues in the industry. They swear by the durability, minimal maintenance, and year-round lush appearance—sounds like a dream for anyone who’s tired of patchy lawns and constant mowing.

On the other hand, there’s a certain charm in having the real thing. Nothing beats the smell of freshly cut grass, does it? But when you’re managing multiple sites across the country, sometimes the practical route wins out.

Because we’re considering custom putting green design options to boost our outdoor entertainment offerings, I made a few phone calls last week. Among the more professional outfits I chatted with, Game on Turf really stood out for their detailed knowledge about golf practice greens and turf installation.

They only mentioned the process in passing, but the way they explained how a golf turf surface is installed—and how it could be integrated into our broader landscape design services—was top-notch.

Of course, we’re still early in the planning stages, so everything’s a bit up in the air. We need to consider landscape construction timelines, budget allocations, and the overall look we’re aiming for. 

But hearing from experts who can offer solutions that suit the scale of our project was a massive relief. That’s one of the joys (and challenges!) of being in procurement: you get to learn about new materials and systems, and if you’re lucky, you find real pros who make the whole process less of a headache.

I’ll admit, we haven’t fully decided which way we’ll lean—could be real grass, or we might go down the path of a synthetic lawn solution in select areas. But it’s great to have options that fit our needs. That’s what makes Kiwi ingenuity so special: we’re always keen to adapt and find the best outcome, even if it involves something as different as recreational turf.

For now, I’m mostly trying to keep everything moving without any major hiccups—crossing my fingers, anyway.
