SEROTONIN
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it.
Serotonin marks my first go at concert photography. This series of photos was not my original plan. As for my Light & Shadow final project, I had initially proposed to do a series of black and white self-portraits; an investigation of the ego. However, I did not have time to finish something I would be satisfied with enough to present. Anyhow, this series is no backup plan: concert photography is something I have wanted to do for a while as it is a fusion of two of my favorite activities; watching my favorite artists perform live and capturing the beautiful instants of time the eye takes for granted. Such a wonderful concoction is why I named this series "serotonin"- I was beyond excited for this opportunity to finally do concert shoots. In a way, my journey as a photographer has come full circle, as my initial inspiration is Terry O'Neill, whose photos of celebrities and musicians I adored very much.
These photos were taken at the venue bar Baby's All Right in Brooklyn. The dark stage and neon lights provide a wonderful atmosphere for this project. The musicians I photographed are Computerwife, one of my favorite artists, and the band Slow Hollows.

Final Project Proposal "Light and Shadow"
DOLL
My past assignments for this class have mostly consisted of landscapes and locations. I took this class because I enjoyed taking photos and I wanted to learn more about the technical aspects of photography, but there is another more specific reason behind me taking this class- that is, I wanted to learn how to take aesthetically-pleasing portraits and self-portraits. I want to finally pursue this motivation for my final project. I want to create something personal, something that is specifically me. My plan is a series of self portraits. They will be in high contrast black and white coloring because I’d love to bring out the intensity of this style. It is a style I have not explored in-depth yet and one that I would like to experiment with, especially to differentiate my final from my very colorful midterm. This high contrast style of black and white will also help me solidify the theme of “light and shadow”. I wish to capture images that explore my queerness and gender nonconformity, and the trauma and joy that comes with rejecting social norms and familial expectations in search of something that is wholly me. I will produce 5-7 images. I do not want to take a lot of images because I feel worrying about quantity would distract me from curating what could be simply, a few strong images and their full potential realized. The images will be shot both indoors and outdoors in a variety of locations that I have yet to decide. I will look for locations with lighting conditions I deem particularly interesting to help enforce the visuality of “light and shadow”. The images will be shot in large format; 24M 6000×4000 pixels. I will be using my Sony a6000 mirrorless camera, as usual. Adobe Photoshop will be used to help dramatize the images and fix imperfections. I would like to experiment with lights and reflectors for the indoor shoots. The American-gothic album Preacher’s Daughter by Ethel Cain draws upon the artist’s own religious trauma from her Christian upbringing and moving away from home. The artist is a transwoman who started her transition and music career shortly after moving away from her home in Florida. Her roots are very visible in her music, being heavily influenced by Gospel music and Americana.
Tumblr media
The dream pop album Softscars by Yeule is an album about past trauma that never heals completely. The artist’s nonbinary identity is intrinsic to this album, being directly referenced in some of the songs such as “cyber meat”.

During my trip to Fotografiska in August, my absolute favorite exhibit was on the Stars exhibit on the 5th floor. This exhibit was a whole floor of legendary portraits of icons from Hollywood, music, fashion, politics, and sports. And these portraits were taken by British photographer Terry O'Neill, who I would say, after my experience, is my favorite photographer, and is a major influence in my interest in photography.
Tumblr media
This is my picture of the very first photo that caught my attention in the Stars exhibit, and which I would say is the most captivating shot in the whole floor and is widely regarded as O'Neill's best work, 'It was a picture in a million', O'Neill wrote. The story behind this photo is that O'Neill had been hired to take photo for the press on the set of the 1971 film Les Petroleuses. French actress Brigitte Bardot, the woman pictured, is the lead of this film. O'Neill never got close to her, as she didn't speak much English, but she gave off an extraordinary stature. Bardot held a cigarette as part of her scene. As the wind blew, she kept brushing her hair out of her eyes. The wind blew once more and O'Neill found his perfect composition, her trademark hair was in her eyes, her cigarette dangling from her lips. The shot was published worldwide in many major magazines.
Tumblr media
The second photo that caught my attention was Faye Dunaway the morning after winning an Oscar for Best Actress at the Academy Awards in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, March 1977. It was the morning after Dunaway had been selected to win the Academy Away for Best Actress in Network. Dunaway and O'Neill had agreed to meet by the pool of the Beverly Hills Hotel where he'd bribed the pool boy for early access. She appeared, having had barely a minute of sleep. Faye sunk into her deskchair and beheld her award as it stood triumphantly on the table, the morning's papers, which bore the headlines of her victory scattered across her feet. O'Neill wanted to capture "that moment-the moment the actor wakes up and it dawns on them that, overnight, they've not only just become a star, but also a millionaire. This is that moment of realization".

David Bowie is one of my favorite 70's artists, I love his song Space Oddity, so finding him in this exhibit was a cool moment. O'Neill was photographing Bowie for the Diamond Dog album and his 1974 tour at the Universal Ampitheatre in Los Angeles. During this shoot, Bowie was sitting with an extremely large dog. A strobe light had gone off and the barking mad dog decided to jump at it. Bowie didn't react.
