The way OFMD liberated me. Femininity and masculinity to me are interchangeable concepts that anyone can possess without that dictating their identity. Before that I could have never been comfortable being a trans guy with long hair, wearing makeup and all that. Now? Fuck that I’m slaying. Wee John is my hero, you’re telling me this big scary guy who likes to set things on fire is a softie who sleeps with a plushie, makes dresses and is a drag queen? You literally can be and do anything. Izzy, the scariest pirate in the whole show, wearing makeup, bright red lipstick and singing softly in French? Stede with his fancy four inch heels? Jim as a drag king? Helped me be just so comfortable with myself. And that was a difficult journey, being a trans man and being comfortable enough to be feminine without feeling guilty. And this show did it for me! They just grabbed my by my face and said ‘you can do and be anything you want to. ANYTHING you want to. Do you understand that? Anything at all. It is NEVER too late to be you’ and all I could do was just listen and nod. The whole ‘it’s never too late and there’s no one right way to be queer’ makes me wanna scream and cry and eat the TV and I’ll never not be grateful OFMD for liberating me in a way that makes me feel actually and genuinely happy about myself.

I'm reading Pat Barker's Silence of the Girls atm - the retelling of the Trojan war from Briseis' pov - and don't get me wrong it's a great idea and the book has powerful stuff in it, but I constantly get thrown off by the intense Britishness in the dialogues. Sod off, bugger, you alright mate - it keeps taking me out, one second I'm picturing men in bronze armour and crested helmets and the next I get intrusive images of a bunch of lads going for a cheeky pint at the pub 💀😭

I saw someone talking about how Izzy is just letting himself be silly when he talks, him saying “and when the curse takes a hold… well it takes a hold”. Do you know how much that little scene means to me? He barely ever talks and when he does he’s cursing and yelling because listen, he has to calculate everything he says a million times before he does, because everything he says has to be intimidating and scary and perfect “to make up for it. For the fact that it’s me”. You look at him and you see him begging; please love me, I’ll be everything you want me to be, just please love me. He will be a blood thirsty pirate Edward wants him to be, cleaning up his mess, he will be a legendary soldier Stede thinks of him, a patient teacher, he’ll be a person to talk to about your traumas like Lucius saw. He will bend backwards and forwards to fit the narrative of whoever is talking to him, whatever they expect from him, however they see him, and he’ll talk so calculated, a whole different person to each of them. You look at him and his eyes are screaming “Please love me I’ll be good”. And then in s2 he starts letting himself to just… be. To just talk. Not think too much about what he’s saying. Being silly. Dropping all the calculations, just talking. And that means so much to me. And I think that means just as much to him.

One could argue he is starting to do that because he is finally feeling safe and that he has people in his corner. He feels safe with Stede.
