Project 2 Reflection

I found this project very enjoyable. The fast-paced nature of the project meant that I had to work fast and make quick decisions. I am usually very indecisive when it comes to decision making, so having a tight schedule helped me to make decisions and move forward.

I enjoyed exploring a range of new collateral as outputs. I haven't had the chance to design signage or a website yet, so this was a good challenge. I found that once I got my system sorted, it was relatively easy to put the outputs together. Of course, there was a lot of trial and error to see what worked and looked best before settling on an end design.

A challenge that I found in this project was the lack of opportunity for creative outputs due to it being a free event. I wasn't able to design tickets, or wristbands or merchandise, as it wouldn't make sense for a free event. However, I still enjoyed making the digital outputs I decided to go with - Instagram and a website.

Another challenge for me was finding out about the level 4 lockdown. This meant that many of my plans had to be reworked. This included my mockups. I wasn't able to print my brochure to take photos for my mockup, which was a shame since the design of it was folded in a unique way. I also wasn't able to take mockup photos of posters in the city, to give my event a more realistic feel.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this project and am happy with the outputs I produced. I am glad I got the opportunity to try out a new style of design - using geometric shapes and busy patterns. As I tried to stay away from the styles I’ve worked with in past projects.

Brochure Mockup

I had planned to print out my brochure and photograph it myself since it was an uncommon dimension and fold style. But because of the level 4 lockdown, I wasn’t able to do this. It was difficult to find mockups online that were a similar design.

I decided to add in some monotoned treated images to announce the event lineup. I felt that this would help the images to fit in with the colours of the event. I feel like it made the event seem more realistic than using only vector illustrations and text.

Testing Web Design @ 100%

I tested out my website design at full scale on my laptop to see what improvements I needed to make. I found that the pt size of my body copy was very large. So I reduced this to make it easier to view. This task helped me to further refine the design and fix the details.

Poster A2 Test Print & Feedback

During class, I did an A2 test print. I got feedback on what could be improved. These improvements we mostly to do what the illustrations. Changing them slightly would help to make them more identifiable and distinguishable.

NZ Event Website Examples

To source inspiration for the design of my website, I looked into various NZ based events. This helped me to plan out what I needed to include and various ways to place elements. I looked into the top bar of all the websites to see where they places the logo and menu items. I also looked at the main images to see how each festival kept the viewers attention. This was a very useful way to get inspired for my own website design.

Event Signage - Direction Signs

I decided to do an a frame poster stand style signage as well as the banner. The purpose of these signs are to direct people around and welcome them. I played around with a few different styles of imagery and found it difficult to decide on what was working well and was most effective. I thought it would be a good idea to turn the solid colour shapes in the map into patterned shapes and found that it worked surprisingly well.

Event Signage - Stage Identification Signs

I decided to use these tall flags as event signage. I chose them because the height of them would make them easily identifiable in a crowd and from a distance. 

I experimented with using different patterns for the backgrounds. I wanted them to be bright to match the vibe of the event, as well as to stand out.
