Blog post #3
International Public Relations reading
24 American Customs
Facts that I found interesting were:
Tipping: As stated in the article, Japan and South Korea see tipping as an insult which is different than how it’s perceived in the U.S. In the U.S tips are how majority of certain employees make their money, depending on their job position. For example waitresses and restaurant hostess are paid below minimum wage, and use tips as a way to get paid for their services. Also, tips are a norm, and sometimes are already included in checks when paying for services in the U.S. When I was a hostess at BoneFish Grill I was paid below minimum wage but received tips every night that I worked, tips were split amongst waiters, hostess and bartenders.
Wearing sweatpants, flip flops, wrinkly clothing or baseball caps: I found it rather Interesting that Japan and Europe consider wearing these clothing items as sloppy and disrespectful, when in the U.S these clothing items are considered comfortable and casual. I can’t imagine not wearing g sweatpants or flips flops in the summertime. I can see how this might be considered as sloppy appearance, but it’s truly depends on where you wear these clothing items to. For instance, you wouldn’t wear sweatpants and flip flops to work or nice restaurant, but perhaps maybe to the store or the beach.
Telling people to help themselves: Asking people to make themselves feel right at home is common in U.S culture and even in my personal household. It indicates that you are sharing a personal space with someone, and you want to make them feel comfortable and welcome in a new environment. Where as in some Asian Cultures, it’s uncommon.
Two interesting facts about Japan
In Japanese culture, it’s tradition that you bow when greeting someone out of respect. The longer and deeper your bow, the more respectful. There are also different variations of bowing, from a slight nod of the head, to completely bending down at the waist, and bowing with your hands together infant of your chest is not a Japanese custom.
In some countries and households, the motion of slurping shows lack of etiquette at the dinner table, but in Japanese cultures, slurping your noodles shows a sign of enjoyments of your meal and a compliment to the chef. In their culture, its and indication of good manners.
Jiimjiilbang
I was unaware of the Jiimjiilbang culture, but I have seen some of the services that are offered at spas while on vacation. A lot of hotels and resorts outside of the U.S incorporate the services and techniques used at the bath house in Korea such as the variations of saunas and the hot and cold baths . The scrub that was performed in the video and stated in the article are also sold at certain stores in the U.S. I personally have purchased a scrub for my face and body from TJMaxx thats in Korean and is use it for removing all dead skin cells and as an exfoliant.I personally think I’d be interested in the jiimjilbang, it would be a new experience, and also seems like it can be relaxing if you have a high pain tolerance.

My Country of choice
My country of choice will be Hong Kong China. I selected Hong Kong because, as I did some research, I kept coming across how the government in Hong Kong, uses Public Relations to rebuild the countries shattered international image. I’m very curious as to why Hong Kong has such a shattered image and how they can possibly rebuild it. Hong Kong has also failed at finding a PR firm that can help them change their tainted image and has looked to London to help them build their Public Relations status. The pictures I have included below are of Hong Kong city at night, which resembles New York City, along with their Buddha Tian Tan, Hong Kong Disney, and Old Peak Road which is where my Uncle and Aunt lived when I went to go visit.
