Ladies First Documentary: Connections
Text to Text:
In the documentary, Deepika speaks about her past life. She explains that people from Ratu, India are so “narrow minded” that they think women shouldn’t be allowed to do anything. This includes work, sports, education etc. They believe it is the mans job to do those things. In their opinion women should just stay at home and clean and cook the whole day. I read an article recently that said, some countries banned women from participating in the Olympics until 2012. Before the London Games, Saudi Arabia, along with Qatar and Brunei, had never had a female athlete compete in the Olympics. All three countries decided to end that legacy in 2012 and include women in their delegations. The reason why these countries did this was because they believed women were the “weaker sex” and therefore had no business in playing sports. This relates to the film because both Deepika, the population of India and those women struggling in those countries faced hatred and abuse for simply just playing sports. These women were looked down to because they wanted to be something more than just house wives. This goes to show that women in all parts of the world still don’t have the will or freedom to do what they want in this world. Thus, holding back the talents and capabilities of many of these women.
Text to Self:
When Deepika Kumari went to the Rio Olympics in 2016, she lost to Russia. She faced her first ever major loss, that really took a tole on her life. When asked, “How did you feel after Rio?”. Deepika broke down and cried and told them not to ask her that question. Right after Deepika’s lost in Rio, she explains that she will continue to train and work hard until she achieves her goal of a gold medal. We also see a clip of Deepika working and training hard for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. Proving that she hasn’t given up yet and will continue to persevere until she achieves her goal. I have faced many times in my life where I have failed and broke down as well. This connection is sort of strange too because when people ask me questions about my failures, I tend to get emotional as well. Something major that Deepika and I both have in common is after we fail, we get right back up and try again. We don’t look for excuses, instead we work even harder to do better and to be better in the future. When I was younger I was horrible at the sport of volleyball, and so I would never make the team. One summer, I decided to train myself and practice everyday with my cousin until I got better. I made it my goal to make the volleyball team. I persevered and ended up making the team that following year. Thus, showing that both Deepika and I have the strong will and force to keep going after a failure.
Text to World:
Towards the end of the film it states that no women from India has ever won an olympic gold medal. Nor has any women from across most developing countries. Deepika also states that, women today always say they will work hard, but nobody teaches them the right way to work hard. She proposes a very interesting question. How do we know what we’re doing is right? How will we ever know? I find this relevant and a connection in our world today because most developing countries around the world don’t teach young girls how to do things. They have to figure it out for themselves. This kind of mechanism leaves some girls hopeless in search for a man to come take care of them because they were never taught how to themselves. Yes, their parents have taught them how to eat right and clean, but they have never learned the true skill of independence or perseverance. These are the skills that are necessary to survive in the real world. When Deepika talks about this idea of doing the right thing she is referring to sports, but I think her message goes far beyond sports. Women in developing countries have big dreams and ambitions, but are often held back by fear. We need to change our world today, so that women all over can have the freedom to do what they want and do it right. It is important and relevant for their mental and physical survival.

The Difficulty Pinning Down Gender
Identify and explain the importance of the following;
Dutee Chand:
-She was the first Indian sprinter to reach a final at a global athletics event in 2013,
-At the age of 18 years of age, she became the national champion at 100m and 200m, and an Asian Games bronze medallist.
-She "failed" a test that had nothing to do with fitness, form or even doping, and was dramatically withdrawn from the national team.
-Her natural levels of the hormone testosterone were normally only found in men.
-Dutee Chand is important because instead of the sprinter she has spent years training to be, she became the focus of a challenge to sport's rules on gender, a cause celebre and evidence in a scientific debate about testosterone.
Dora/Heinrich Ratjen:
-Dora Ratjen was a German athlete who participated in the Olympics and other championships in the women’s category
- It was later proved later that she was a man.
-This individual is important because the Ratjen case is one of the biggest sporting scandals in which a man dressed in women's clothes and managed to fool his rivals.
Maria Jose Martinez-Patino:
-Was a Spanish hurdler
-Told in 1985 that she was an XY "man", but refused to quit or feign injury (as it is widely believed many had before)
-Spent the next three years fighting ignorance and ridicule to line up alongside women again.
-Eventually proved her Y chromosomes were the product of a rare genetic syndrome.
- She was also able to show that her condition meant she was insensitive to testosterone: it was in her blood, but it was no good to her.
Caster Semenya:
-Is a South African middle-distance runner and 2016 Olympic gold medalist.
-As an 18-year-old newcomer at the 2009 world championships, she dominated the best women's 800-meter runners. The gap between her and the defending world champion, who finished second, was astounding.
-This amazing win raised a lot of questions about genetic testing
-Semenya had a rare condition, and was subjected to a medical examination by media.
-She was later sidelined for 11 months by world track's governing body, the IAAF, and was only cleared to run again in 2010.
David Epstein:
-David Epstein is an investigative reporter who covers the wide-open space where sports, science and medicine overlap.
-David Epstein writes about the developing science around sport -- from performance-enhancing drugs to the lucky genetics that separate a professional athlete from a duffer.
-He is the author of The Sports Gene, a book that explores the complex factors that make up a championship athlete.
“Biological racism":
-being discriminated against for your biological appearance or characteristics
-Someone who believes that a biological explanation can be given for characteristics of superiority or inferiority possessed by people of a given physical stock
After reading the article, explain if you believe Dutee Chand should be running against women. You need to have specific references to the article and further research in order to have a strong answer.
I believe Dutee Chand should be running against women. I believe this because her whole life she has identified herself as a women, so therefore she should not be excluded from any women’s activities. I believe that it is unfair to take her off the team just based off of her natural testosterone levels. God created her in the way she is, she has not done anything to change or alter her body in any way, and so I think it is wrong for people to say that her natural self is wrong and unfair to many other women. There hasn’t even been any scientific evidence to support the reason that high levels of testosterone give women a selective advantage, so therefore they have no evidence to support restraining her from running with women. Dutee said, “It is true that several players from certain countries also grow naturally to be much taller and stronger than we are. We have worked as hard as they have, but they might win because of the way their bodies are. Can we ask them to control that? Don't we compete with them?" I think this statement is very true because we were all given different traits and characteristics that differ from one another, but this shouldn’t mean we should be kept back from doing what we love just because of our natural traits. I also think if this situation was about a man having some sort of believed advantage over everyone. People wouldn’t shame him and kick him off the team. They would look up to him and admire. Women are discriminated against a lot when they show some sort of strength. I think despite the belief that testosterone gives off an athletic advantage, Dutee Chand should still be allowed to play no matter what the case is because she is a woman.

Heterosexism Opinion
4. Slides 21-24 introduce the concept of Heterosexism. Explain what this means in your own words.
Explain if you accept this concept or not. A good answer will have a clear beginning, middle and end. It will also have specific examples to support their stance. The examples can be either hypothetical or real world. You can also use the prompts on slides 22-24 to help you. Refer to the movie Beholder where you see fit. /10 KTCA
Heterosexism is the belief or assumption that everyone is heterosexual and that heterosexuality is the only “right” and “natural” sexual orientation. I do not agree with this concept of heterosexism because I believe that there is no “right” or “wrong” way to be. I believe that God created us all in our own unique way and so we can’t change who we are or who we become. I don’t believe in science and facts, I just believe in what God has made. Our society has come to the conclusion that the “right” way (heterosexual) is the normal way of life. It is true that many individuals today are heterosexual and so many people become adopted to this way of being “normal” or think this way is the only expected way that our society should be, but it is not. Just because many of us are heterosexual, this does not mean that we are the only “right” people in the world. God created us all equally, but not all alike so it is completely normal for a person to not be heterosexual. This makes them not different or unique, but actually normal because this means that they are able to love, but just in the way that they want to love. In our world today, us heterosexual beings are privileged, but we don’t necessarily know that we are. We don’t earn this privilege it is just automatically given to us based on who we identify as. It is unfair and unjust that we are granted these privelges and people in the LGBTQ community are not. How can these people live like this? With being assaulted and harassed everyday just for who they are. It is unfair and unjust to be treated this way and our society needs to step up and come to the conclusion that everyone is different and unique, but that does not make them any less of a human being. I am not homosexual, but I do know what it feels like to feel weird or out of place, and it's horrible. Growing up I didn’t really fit into the category of what a girl is supposed to be. I let other people’s thoughts and opinions change me into something I’m not and as a result I lost myself and became depressed. I couldn’t imagine going through the hateful comments and looks every single day of my life. I wouldn’t be able to handle it at all. People in our world need to stop being arrogant and naive to what is around them. It is 2018, it is a time of change and growth. We need to shift out of our normal views of people and into what our world is actually like today. It is vital that we do this so we can one day live in a world where gender or identity doesn’t matter, but just a world of peace.

Understanding Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation
1. What are the four characteristics of sexual identity? Explain the differences. /8 C
-The four characteristics of sexual identity are biological sex, gender identity, sex role, and sexual orientation.
-Biological sex is the classification based on our anatomy or genetics
-Gender identity describes the psychological and social meaning added to being a man or woman.
-Sex role is the roles that men and women adopt.
-Sexual Orientation is one’s internal and psychological sense of oneself as male or female, or both or neither, regardless of sexual orientation.
1. Explain the following terms from the PowerPoint;
Intersex: People who are born with physical characteristics of both sexes. Intersex conditions are not always visible at birth and may not be noticed until puberty (when hormones produce unexpected changes) or during unrelated medical procedures.
Third gender: individuals who are categorized as neither male nor female (by their own will or social consensus)
Androgynous: a term that refers to a combination of masculine and feminine characteristics
Bisexual: attracted to both sexes
Asexual: not experiencing sexual attractions
3. Give me all of the statistics from the file. Find other statistics about homophobia. Cite your sources.
- LGBT students hear anti-gay slurs an average of 26 times each day.
- 26% of LGBT youth are told to leave home.
- LGBT youth are more likely to become homeless.
- 30% of all suicides are LGBT.
- 43% of trans-identified persons attempt suicide.
Other statistics:
The number of LGB people who have experienced a hate crime or incident in the last year because of their sexual orientation has risen by 78 percent since 2013
Nearly half (42 per cent) of trans people are not living permanently in their preferred gender role stated they are prevented from doing so because they fear it might threaten their employment status
The death penalty is either ‘allowed’, or evidence of its existence occurs, in 8 countries
Source: https://www.stonewall.org.uk/media/lgbt-facts-and-figures
3. In a clear, focused and organized response discuss which statistics stand out to you the most and why.
The one statistics that stood out to me the most was, “LGBT students hear anti-gay slurs an average of 26 times each day”. This shocked me the most because I know of some people who are apart of the LGBT community and I could never imagine them getting bullied with anti-gay slurs 26 times a day. It still kind of shocks me just how arrogant and mean people can be. We live in a world where there are far more identities than just male or female or gay or straight. These people who criticize and bully people in the LGBT community are either undereducated or misguided because everyone deserves to be treated fairly no matter what they define themselves as. We were all made by God and so it should not matter what we identify as. Another statistic that surprised me was, “43% of trans-identified persons attempt suicide.” this surprised me because almost up go 50% of these human beings have been harrassed and hurt to the point where they have attempted to end their life. I think our society really needs to work on acceptance and equality of every human being because it is vital that we accept and treat everyone with the same amount of respect that we would want of ourselves. To not let things like this happen anymore.

Quick Hit #3 Athletes & Mental Health
In Hit #3, we take a look at athletes and mental health. Here we have two prominent NBA players who are openly admitting to dealing with anxiety and mental health issues.
Why is this an important development in pro sports?
- This is an important development in pro sports because not a lot of players in pro sports openly speak about their personal issues in their lives. A lot of the time, athletes are expected to just play and shut up, but by these nba players opening up about their mental health issues this shows a sudden change in what is expected of these professional athletes. This will overall lead more players to come out and speak openly about their conditions/issues as well.
-Another reason as to why this is a development in pro sports is because now more athletes will become encouraged to come out about their mental issues in hope for the support and help that they need. For example, Kevin Love was forced to leave the game for awhile because of his panic attack. Although, many may see this as a depressing circumstance, it is actually not because by Kevin Love taking time off from the game he will be able to begin his road to recovery and also seek the help that he needs. Panic attacks are a serious issue that need to be dealt with in a professional matter. By more and more athletes coming out about their personal issues this could save the mental health of many other future athletes.
- Lastly this is a huge development in pro sports because many athletes in the past and even now are afraid of openingly discussing their issues in fear as being viewed as the weak one or unreliable teammate, but now since more and more athletes are coming out we’re starting to see that mental health is a serious and normal thing to have. Kevin Love said that he just started seeing a therapist and was afraid to reveal his story out of fear of being seen as “weak or weird or somehow less reliable as a team-mate.” He also said he had been inspired to talk about the panic attack after the Toronto Raptors, Demar DeRozan discussed his struggles with depression the previous week. Thus, showing that there are probably a lot more athletes in the major leagues who are suffering from a mental health issue, but are not saying anything about it in fear that they may be viewed differently or their spot may get taken away. Major leagues need to start showing more support of their athletes by doing weekly checkups and giving them the option to leave the game to get better, with the acception of their spot being saved for them when they get back. It is also the teammates and communities job to be supportive with their words and actions, so that these athletes can feel listened to and supported as well.
What impact will these athletes potentially have on sport at all levels? Explain why
- These major league athletes will inspire many athletes of all levels such as high school and college to speak out when they need help. This can ultimately save many lives because if more players speak out about their illnesses, more attention and support will come their way.
- Many athletes going through issues will look up to these athletes with mental health issues and won’t feel alone in their condition. Much of the time athletes think that they are the only one’s going through problems and so they keep quiet and keep to themselves.
- Many athletes going through struggles can look up to these major league athletes for strength and guidance on what to do. Overall, these athletes will take the initiative to get the help they need.
-Major league athletes can potentially influence sports at all levels to make weekly check ups on their athletes mental health and stability. This could make many athletes feel more supported and listened to. Overall, this can decrease the amount of mental health issues in athletes in all sports.

How do Sports Transform Culture and Society?
Sports transform culture and society because they break down boundaries and ultimately bring people of different races and cultures together.
This year’s raptors team has been said to be possibly the greatest of all time. Although we don’t know the situations that are happening behind the scenes, it is evident that the connection and bond between all the teammates is pretty strong. There is no racism or hatred on the court. Anyone who watches basketball knows that the main and sole focus is the game. The outside world doesn’t matter. In basketball the players don’t identify each other as the “black guy” or the “white guy” they usually identify each other by last name or position on the court. By doing this it automatically breaks down the barrier between people because you are no longer seeing that person for their colour, but for their name or position instead. The love for the game has brought this team so close to each other that they stand and play together as one. The unity and strength of this years raptors team has also brought the city of Toronto together as well. The whole city of Toronto is talking about the new and improved raptors team. When people go to the bar to watch a basketball game it is likely that they will automatically start talking to the guy sitting next to them without even noticing the colour of his skin. Also, in the arena when people cheer for the same team it is unlikely that two people will separate from each other just because of their skin colour. You will also never hear a person say, “Kyle Lowry is trash because he is black” this is because in sports things such as race, religion, status, sex etc. don’t matter. The sole purpose of sports is about skill and nothing else. Therefore, showing that sports break down the social barriers that our society puts up and brings large groups of people together from all around the city.
Sports has also brought people in the past together as well. During World War I, on Christmas Day 1914, the German and British troops put down their weapons and played a friendly game of soccer outside in honour of Christmas. The Germans and Britons hated each other, but when they played the simple game of soccer all that hatred they had for one another had gone away. The game of soccer broke down the barrier of hatred and brought two opposing forces together as one. Although sports can be rough and physical at times, in the end they can ultimately promote peace between two sides. Maybe if everyone took part in that soccer game during WWI hundreds of thousands of lives could of been saved. Maybe the Germans would of realized that the Britons were no different from them and vice versa. Maybe the whole entire war could of ended sooner rather than four years later. Maybe sports could of prevented World War II from erupting. Sports can be the answer to many of our problems in the world because sports are a way to hash out situations in a friendly, but physical way where we get the satisfaction that something big was done to solve our problems. In my opinion, sports are the safest and most reasonable way to solve situations and end disputes in our society. It is better to play a game of soccer than to have a full out war where hundreds of people could die each day. Through this one can see how sports not only bring people together, but can also promote peace as well.
Through these two examples one can see how sports can be used to take down barriers and ultimately bring two groups of people together.

An Interesting Story...
The story of Bethany Hamilton is an interesting and inspirational one. Bethany Hamilton is a pro surfer who began her surfing career at a very young age. In 1998, she was already competing professionally in competitions. At the age of eight-years-old, Bethany came first place in the Rell Sun Menehune surfing competition. From this time on, she continued to achieve great success and came in first place in several competitions. Unfortunately, all good things came to an end on October 31st, 2003, when 13-year-old Bethany went for an early morning surf. Joining her best friend, Alana Blanchard, and her family, the group went surfing along Tunnels Beach, Kauai at around 7:30 am. It was during her swim that Bethany was lying on her surfboard surrounded by numerous turtles and her left arm was dangling on the side of her board in the water. Then suddenly a 14-foot-long shark was fast approaching and soon caught her off guard. Bethany had no time to escape by the time the tiger shark attacked her, her left arm had been severed just below her shoulder. She was assisted by the Blanchards to help her get back to shore, and Alana’s father then created a tourniquet out of a surfboard leach to wrap around what was left of her arm. She was immediately rushed to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, by then she had already lost 60% of her blood and had gone into hypovolemic shock. The early hours of the accident meant that a doctor had to be called to the rescue and rush to the hospital. Fortunately, the doctor was living in a hotel nearby and could make it to help save Bethany. However, her father was already at the hospital when Bethany was brought in. This was not because he had been notified about the incident, but because he had knee surgery scheduled at the hospital for that morning.
In this moment, Bethany took her father’s place in the operating room. The surgery was successful, and Bethany had to stay in the hospital for a week to recover before eventually being released. This incident, however, did not turn Bethany away from her favourite sport. Despite the trauma, Bethany was determined to get back on her surfboard. Without her left arm, she learned how to kick more, and before she knew it, she was ready to compete once again. After one month Bethany was back in the water and within two years she had won her first National title.
Many people questioned how Bethany could have returned to surfing after such a tragic attack. Bethany explained how this was always her childhood dream. “I’ve wanted to become a professional surfer since I was eight. For a little while when I was in the hospital after the attack, I thought I wouldn’t be able to ever surf again. That didn’t last long. I have a deep passion for surfing, and I was determined to keep going – arm or no arm. And I did; with God’s help.” Bethany Hamilton is now 26 years old and is still surfing. She has overcome substantial challenges in pursuing her dreams as a professional surfer and has arguably proven to be one of the best female surfers of all time. She has proven to many people that the loss of her arm does not define her, but instead makes her a better athlete.
I thought that this story was important and interesting one because it is a story of a young girl who chose to take this tragedy and turn it into something positive and motivational. I think that many young children are so pure and positive in our world today. They can make the best out of tough situations. If I was in Bethany’s situation I would of acted the complete opposite. I would of been cranky and miserable about the whole thing. I would of given up on surfing entirely and blamed others for my incident. I would of not seen the light in the situation. Most adults who suffer the loss of an arm or leg don’t see the positivity in these situations either and so this story kind of inspires me to be more positive. Something interesting that also caught my attention was when Bethany had been rushed to the hospital, her dad had already been there and so bethany was able to get the full attention and recovery she needed to recover. I find this a strange coincidence, because maybe this was all God’s plan from the beginning to create this story, so we can all learn from it and be inspired as well. The motivation and determination Bethany had during the whole situation was amazing. I don’t think anyone could of been this accepting or reasonable at such a young age. I think that Bethany Hamilton should be known more by people all over the world for her strength and perseverance that she demonstrated throughout her entire experience.

Concussions: Activity #3
- A concussion is a type of brain injury that can’t be seen. You may not have a bump, bruise or even a scratch on your head. All that has to happen for you to get a concussion is for ur head to move around inside your skull. You don’t even need to get hit in the head to have a concussion. A hard slam to the body can make your brain move inside your skull. Most people don’t know this, so they assume that many sports are safer to play than others. This is untrue since in every sport you can get severely hit to the body and possibly cause a concussion to happen.
- Getting a concussion does not always mean getting knocked out. Less than one in ten people who get a concussion don't lose conscientious. Many athletes who get knocked in the head during a game continue on playing. Many think that if their awake and able to stand up that they are okay. By continuing to play after having a concussion, that person is further damaging their brain and making matters much worse instead of better. It is best to just sit out of the game and regain strength to play for another time. Also, many athletes are not getting the attention that they need regarding concussions. This is due to the media and reporters who address concussions by saying things such as, “he got his bell rung” suggesting that this is apart of the game and normal to families.
- You can get a concussion from any physical sport even skateboarding, biking, or snowboarding. All athletes need to be aware and know what the certain risks are for their sport. Many athletes are uneducated and don’t know the risks to begin with. This can lead them down a terrible path where they could face challenges such as loss of memories, sight, who they are as a person etc.
- The number of sports and recreation concussions every year can be as high as 3.8 million. I think this is a severe problem in sports that needs to be handled and addressed more often. I think that it is the NFL, NHL, MLS, etc to provide the proper information about the risks of sports to maintain the amount of concussions we have each year. In the past and even now leagues are trying to cover up or hide this crucial information from people. This is wrong because by doing that they are risking the lives of many individuals just for the game.
- This video addressed three key steps of what to do if you have a concussion.
- 1. Recognize: know the signs of concussions for yourself and your teammates. All athletes should know all the possible symptoms of a concussion before even playing the sport. This includes in practice and game time. By doing this it will help keep concussions from developing into more severe situations. Recognizing is the key initial step that all athletes must take in order to properly treat their head injury.
- 2. Report: tell ur coach, athletic train or parents about your symptoms. Get out of the game, staying in could make it worse for you and your team. I think that reporting could be the most difficult part for athletes. Many athletes today are so caught up in the game that they can’t stand to be away from it. Many athletes also question if saving their brains is more important than the game. In my opinion your health and brain should be what’s most important. I do understand that many of these athletes have a strong passion for the game, but the game is not worth their life. Many of these athletes have a life outside of the game. They have families and friends and not to mention their whole 40+ years ahead of them. I don’t think playing the game and living till 40 is worth it at all.
3. Rest: take time off from sports, school work, and activities until your doctor says otherwise. This is the last and key step. It is essential that athletes rest and take time off for as much as they need to fully recover from their concussion. If they don’t, this could result in further damage. Today in sports when athletes bump into each other I rarely see an athlete go back to the bench and stay out of the game. Athletes today never show weakness and continue to play on despite having a concussion. Many athletes today do not understand the severe impacts concussions can have on their lives. However, there are many athletes that do understand the impacts and consequences of concussions, but simply don’t care in the moment while playing the sport. This is again due to the lack of information or the need to finish the game.
Source: https://youtu.be/_5hlm3FRFYU
- You only need one symptom to diagnose a concussion, it does not matter if it is headaches, dizziness, or nausea. If you get a blow to the head or body and you have that one persisting symptom, that is a concussion. Some athletes do know the symptoms of a concussion, but many think that in order to have a concussion you need to experience more than one symptom. Because of this thinking, the number of CTE and other brain injuries has gone up.
- Women are more susceptible to concussions due to the neck strength that men have. It is proven and believed that men do have stronger necks which may prevent the whiplash effect and jiggling of the brain. Although women are more susceptible to concussions I think men who get concussions are more often lead to severe diseases such as CTE. I think this because first off men are more prone to play more physical sports such as boxing and football and also it is expected that a man should never quit or show any weakness during a game. Men are expected to be the strongest at all times so this leads some of them to continue on with their game despite any symptoms they may be having.
- Wearing a helmet does not prevent concussions, it only protects you from catastrophic brain injuries. Helmets don't stop the accelerating rotation of the brain. Before I thought wearing a helmet could protect against concussions, but as I have learned it does not. Maybe then we need to create a helmet that supports the head and neck to prevent the whiplash effect that happens during a concussion.
- experts have not identified the part of the brain where a concussion occurs. This is not surprising at all because if they did we would of been farther ahead in our research and in finding a way to prevent concussions entirely. From this I have realized just how hard and tricky concussions can be. More and more people die because concussions are such a hard thing to diagnose since you can’t see it on an X Ray and experts can’t tell which part of the brain is affected during a concussion.
- An x ray or ct scan cannot diagnose a concussion, the only way to diagnosis a concussion is from a knowledgeable physician. I think that there are many ways our world can work around concussions and find ways to help people. If an x ray or ct scan cannot diagnose a concussion then we need to advance our technology and build a machine that can diagnose a concussion for the future safety of our next generation. I know that it sounds a lot easier than it is, but we do need something that can help us with the prevention of concussions or else the number of concussions and deaths will increase drastically.
Source: https://youtu.be/pGFq0jDr3Tw
**this article explores concussions in high school sports.**
- High school athletes are more vulnerable to concussions than older athletes and may take longer to recover. I believe this is true because our brains don’t develop fully until the age of 25. At such a young age many of these athletes brains are still developing. Adults athletes brains who play in the NFL, NHL etc. have already been fully developed. Therefore, it is much harder on the brain to manage a concussion when it is young.
- High school athletes are 3 times more likely to experience a second concussion if concussed once during a season. The adolescent brain is still developing, so it is easier for it to become damaged and altered in teenagers.
- Approximately 10% of high school athletes take more than 7 days to recover from the effects of a concussion. Most student athletes and the school are not aware of this and so the school relies on the students' self-report of their symptoms to monitor progress and to make decisions about when they can return to play. Reliance on the student is problematic because the students will not always be so truthful and also they may lack the knowledge as to what constitutes a concussion. Athletes may also be reluctant to report symptoms due to fear they will be removed from the playing field. However, allowing an athlete to return to play based on his/ her judgement can increase the likelihood for additional injuries.
- Self-report questionnaires were given to 529 Canadian soccer and football players before the season. Questions asked whether the athlete had experienced any of the symptoms of concussion during the past year. Over 60% of the athletes endorsed having some of the symptoms, but only 23% of the football players and 20% of soccer players actually realized that he or she had suffered a concussion. This proves that we need to provide student athletes with more information regarding concussive symptoms and the potential implications of a concussion.
- Evidence also has been reported that symptoms of concussions resolve more slowly in the adolescent athlete as compared to adult athletes. The high school players showed significant memory impairment at day seven, while the adult athletes showed similar deficits only within the 24 hours post injury. These results suggest the current guidelines used to decide when to allow an athlete to return-to-play may not be appropriate for all age groups. The adolescent and adult brain are very much different and should not be viewed as the same when it comes to concussions.

Activity #2 (Concussions)
1. Title
- “What It’s Like to Live With a Disease No One Believes Is Real ‘I Don’t Even Remember What I Used to Feel Like’”
2. Evaluate the source. Where is the info coming from? Does it seem like a credible source? Who is quoted?
- The information is coming from a international fashion magazine for women called, ‘’Cosmopolitan’’. This magazine mainly focuses on topics such as celebrity news, dating and relationships help, beauty tutorials, fashion trends, and more. Although this magazine focuses more on the materialistic world, I still think it is a reliable source because it focuses on mainly women and it is an official magazine approved by everyone around the world. The person who wrote this article is Tess Koman. The person who is quoted is Rachel F. She is a 27-year-old female who struggles with a traumatic brain injury- a diagnosis doctors didn’t take seriously.
3. Key Stats. Very important here.
- more than 2.5 million Americans suffer from a TBI.
- According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a serious health problem in the United States. Each year TBI’s contribute to a substantial number of deaths and cases of permanent disability. In 2010 2.5 million TBI’s occured either as an isolated injury or along with other injuries
4. Key Quote
- “This time, while I was driving home, the left side of the road started to disappear.’’
- A study that was conducted on the PubMed website concluded that mild TBI’s are associated with impairment in a crash-related component of driving. This suggests that patients with MTBI should be advised to refrain from driving for at least the first 24 hours' postinjury.
- Rachel at the time was always being pushed away by doctors and did not know the consequences or restrictions that came with having a mild TBI.
- “I always wonder what other 27-year old people’s memories are like. I assume that they’re much better than mine. And here’s a great example -- I can’t even remember what I was just saying.’’
- A single concussion can cause lasting structural damage to the brain that can result in memory loss.
5 Two points each for who, what, where, why and how.
- Rachel was diagnosed in 2012 with a Traumatic Brain Injury, a condition that more than 2.5 million Americans suffer from. Rachel is a professional horse rider who loves her sport, but she was forced to stop after having four pivotal concussions. The first concussion was in 2009. Rachel was playing tug of war and as she was pulling the rope her opponent decided to let go which resulted in her flying into the class behind her. Rachel was bleeding heavily and had pieces of class stuck in her head. The next day Rachel went to the doctor and the doctor told her that she was fine. The second time Rachel encountered a concussion was while snowboarding. While wearing a helmet she slipped and hit the back of her head. Rachel felt awful and asked her friend to take her to the hospital. Rachel was dismissed again. In 2010, during a riding lesson Rachel fell off and hit her head again. Rachel got back up on the horse and continued to ride (you should never do this if you have a concussion could result in extensive damage to the brain) Rachel doesn’t remember what happened after except that she woke up in the ER. She described this moment in the ER as useless. The last concussion was in 2012. She was schooling a horse and it bucked her off. Rachel went high up in the air then came down. Again, she hit the back of her head. When Rachel reached the ER she was dismissed with comments such as, “Oh, you’re fine. You’ll be fine, just rest.” Months after her really bad concussion, Rachel was having lingering migraines, dizziness, and the inability to concentrate. In 2013, she went to a neurologist and it was then that she was properly diagnosed with TBI. Rachel now has to alter her life to fit the needs of her TBI. Rachel can’t drink, dance, or run anymore because of her TBI. She is restricted from doing certain things in her life, but manages to do them in a different way. Rachel explains that despite her condition, she is happy and comfortable with her current life.
6 Do a little bit of research. Find more information to supplement what is in the article. Document your sources.
- In this article, Sgt. Kevin Ash, enlisted in the Army Reserves at the age of 18. Over three deployments, he was exposed to 12 combat blasts, many of them roadside bombs. He returned home in 2012 a different man.
- Sgt. Kevin Ash and his family didn’t know what was wrong with him. When Sgt. Kevin Ash went to the hospital to seek help, doctors just prescribed therapy and medication and sent him off. From this his health began to decline quickly.
- Similarly when Rachel went to the doctor she was told that she was fine and nothing was wrong as well. She was sent home every time.
- shows just how uneducated people were in 2004 when Sgt. Kevin Ash was diagnosed with CTE and still are in the year of 2012 when Rachel was diagnosed. Kevin wasn’t so lucky because he had one of the most severe stages of CTE and decided to take his life because of the amount of pain and changes he was going through. Rachel however had visited many doctors to try and figure out what was happening. It wasn’t until she met a neurologist that she was finally diagnosed with CTE. If Rachel hadn’t met with a neurologist maybe then she would have took the same root as Sgt. Kevin Ash did. Many of these athletes and veterans are convinced by doctors that what they are experiencing is just imaginary or not important. This causes many of the them to lose their minds even more and to do unpleasant actions.
- Until a few years ago, NFL players who struggled with severe depression, bouts of rage and memory loss in their retirement were often told they were just having a hard time adjusting to life away from the game. Doctors have since learned these changes can be symptoms of the degenerative brain disease CTE -- chronic traumatic encephalopathy, caused by blows to the head.

Derek Boogard (Concussions)
1. What did you learn?
- I learned that a concussion is a traumatic brain injury that affects your brain function. A concussion is usually caused by a blow to the head and most often happen to athletes who play physical sports such as hockey, boxing, football, and even soccer.
- I also learned that the effects of a concussions are usually temporary but can include headaches and problems with concentration, memory, balance and coordination.
- Although concussions are temporary they can lead to life long diseases such as CTE if they occur often enough
- Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a degenerative brain disease found in athletes, military veterans, and others with a history of repetitive brain trauma. In CTE, a protein called Tau forms clumps that slowly spreads throughout the brain, killing brain cells.
- Early symptoms of CTE usually appear in a patient's late 20s or 30s, and affect a patient's mood and behavior.
- Many sports athletes commit suicide at an early age due to the pain and depression they face from these concussions and CTE
2. Did your opinions change at all?
- Yes, my opinions did change on contact sports. I never thought contact sports such as football, hockey, or soccer would be harmful to ones brain. I mainly thought these sports just caused broken bones or fractures. I assumed this because the athletes who played these sports wore headgear and padding to protect themselves, but as I came to realize...wearing a helmet is simply not enough to protect the brain. In this particular video, Derek Boogaard fights his opponents practically naked. He wears no type of head protection at all and he is fighting on ice where the odds of him falling and hitting his head are much greater. Athletes who play football, boxing, and soccer also take many blows to the head everyday, thus increasing the amount of concussions they have. I never would of thought sports could be this dangerous, but now that I know this information I see contact sports as not something to cheer on, but as something that needs to be adjusted and fixed for the future health and lives of the next generations who play these sports.
3. Should there be fighting?
- No I do not think there should be fighting in the NHL for two reasons. First off, by fighting you are putting your life on the line. Fighting is very physical so it increases chances of many brain diseases such as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). CTE has been the most common disease in athletes who have died at relatively young ages due to suicide. In Derek Boogaard’s case, he was experiencing heavy amounts of pain. Derek turned to pain killers to ease the pain (one of the main symptoms of CTE) one day he ingested both alcohol and drugs. This combination of drugs and alcohol ultimately lead to his death. It was not the the drugs and alcohol that killed Derek Boogaard, it was the fighting itself. The constant fights that he was in started the trail to his death.
- Another reason as to why I don’t think there should be fighting in the NHL is because it is not necessary. If people want to see a fight they should go watch boxing where people choose to do this. Boogaard was in some way forced to fight. He fought to keep his reputation and place on the team. If Boogaard did not fight he would have been off the team. Hockey at the time was everything to him because it was the only constant in his life, so it is understandable why he didn’t want to give it up. The game of hockey should have nothing to do with fighting at all. It should just be about the game and nothing else. Fighting is irreverent.
4. Is anybody responsible for Derek's death?
- Nobody is responsible for his death because nobody at the time could of thought playing a sport like hockey, would end someones life. Before watching this video I didn’t even know just how severe and serious concussions were to ones brain. Many people at the time were uneducated about the sport and the consequences that came with it.
- Many people may argue that it is the NHL’s fault that so many athletes are committing suicide. I disagree because the NHL does not force players to play. The players who come to the NHL are willing to play whether they know the consequences or not.
- Both theNHL and athletes were completely uneducated on the consequences of concussions at the time.
5. The response of the NHL
- The NHL said it is serious about preventing and treating concussions and it has instituted rules on hits to the head. However, their are no plans to change the rules of the game. They think that bostons research is still in its early stages and they have no real evidence that CTE is the damage caused from hockey. I don’t agree with the NHL’s response. Although Boston only studied 4 brains with CTE, I think that is enough evidence to atleast get some changes to happen to the rules. I think the NHL should of took this research more seriously and altered the rules at the time to decrease the amount of lives that may have been lost in the future.
6. anything else that you think is relevant
- Today a lot of athletes are playing these contact sports with full knowledge of the consequences. Some athletes it seems, rather sacrifice their health or life just to play the game.
- With more and more people being educated about CTE, parents won’t want their children playing these dangerous sports in the future
- Maybe one day football or boxing might come to an end due to this

Introduction & Introduction sentences to Essay
What does it mean to be an icon? When people hear the word icon they immediately think of a person that is smart, inspirational, and life changing. However, an icon does not need to be an extraordinarily person. I believe that an icon is a person who is willing to sacrifice everything for the well being of everyone else. Secondly, this person would also have to represent or symbolize something greater than what he or she is. Lastly, this person would have to bring an idea for change into the world. Muhammad Ali was an icon as he was a smart, inspirational and a well known man. Ali sacrificed and served time in prison to stand for his rights as an African black American. He became a symbol for hope for people of colour everywhere. Ali became an icon for not what he accomplished, but for what he stood for: civil rights, equality, and religious freedom. Through Ali we can see many young icons in our world today, Colin Kaepernick is one of them. Through the sacrifices and hardships he has faces, one can see how Colin Kaepernick is an icon.
Colin Kaepernick has made many sacrifices during his stand, many of which have costed him a lot.
Colin Kaepernick’s stand for social justice has installed hope for many black people across America today.
Colin Kaepernick has proven to be an icon as he continuously help others in need through his donation of over hundreds and thousands of dollars.

Muhammed Ali Pt.3
Video “Muhammed Ali Documentary 2010 HD | Life of Muhammed Ali”: https://youtu.be/BwpTYseroWw Childhood: Muhammed Ali was born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. on January 17, 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky. -he grew up in a time where racial segregation was happening. As he grew up he believed that segregation was right. He believed that black people and white people should be separated, bus as he grew older this view of his changed. -In the 1940s, many black people faced a lot of struggles and were judged everyday. The highest job a black person could achieve was a teacher. -Muhammad Ali grew up in the middle class with two parents, and always had enough food and clothes. -Muhammed means worthy of all praises and Ali means most high -Ali had four wives and nine children in total -In 1967 Ali refused to go to the Vietnam war. He believed that they only wanted him because of his title of heavy weight champion and because he was a Muslim. “I got nothing against the vieg cong, they never called me a n*****”. From this Ali declared that if he is drafted he will not fight in the war. “If i though the war was going to bring freedom and equality to 22 million of my people, they wouldn’t have to draft me. I’d join tomorrow.” He was then stripped of his title and licence to box and sent to prison. He was not afraid of the political or cultural repercussions or the lose of money. He said that it was okay if he didn’t fight again as long as he believed that he was the people’s champion, that was enough for him. -“his fights were like a fight for justice” -Ali’s first ever lost was to Joe Frazier. The process to this fight was hectic. This fight was more than just a fight to prove who was the best. It was about civic rights. People who thought the Vietnam war was wrong stood with Ali and people who thought the Vietnam war was right stood with Frazier. The result of this match was devastating for many Ali supporters. It didn’t matter so much that Ali lost, but that it meant the other people were right. The people that stood for the war and praised it, were right. Many of these people were white and were standing for something that was wrong. These people were getting in the way of history and change.

Muhammed Ali Pt.2
Second Article “Muhammed Ali: 4 ways He changed America”: https://www.google.ca/amp/s/www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-sports/muhammad-ali-4-ways-he-changed-america-155463/amp/ One of the reasons as to how Muhammed Ali changed America was he introduced “Black Power” to white Americans. Muhammed Ali had become the physical manifestation of the concept. After is victory against Liston. He announced that he would be changing his given slave name, Cassius Clay to Muhammed Ali. Many sports writers and boxing rivals refused to call him by his new name. Ali spoke out against this and said, “I know where I’m going and I know the truth and I don’t have to be what you want me to be, I’m free to be what I want” Ali was speaking for his Black rights as a human to do or say whatever he wants without the disrespect and judgements from everyone else. Ali transformed over the years from a pro boxer to an activist for social injustice and racial inequality to many black, muslim, and anti-war people across america. Another reason as to how Muhammed Ali changed America was because he jumpstarted the Antiwar movement. When Muhammed Ali’s draft status was reclassified he became eligible to serve in the military. Muhammed Ali refused to go to war. He spoke out saying why should he go fight for America and kill innocent people, when America won’t even fight for him and his religious rights. I agree with this because at the time no black person was getting the justice, equality, or freedom that they deserved. What is the point of going out and fighting for someone else’s freedom if you don’t have any freedom of your own? Many people however, hated him for this saying this. They thought it was an unpatriotic thing to do. Similarly, Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the national anthem and many people said as well, that it was an unpatriotic thing to do. Many people showed hatred to Muhammed Ali by calling him names such as a coward and traitor. However, Ali’s stand caused many people such as Martin Luther King to come out against the conflict in Vietnam in April 1967 and also Tommy smith and John Carlos raising their fists in protest on 1968 Olympics medal stand to outfielder Curt Flood’s 1969 challenge against baseball reserve clause. His stance and courage is still an inspiration for many young people today.

Muhammed Ali Pt. 1
First Article “Muhammed Ali Global Icon: https://www.ringtv.com/501969-muhammad-ali-global-icon/ -“Between 1964 and 1967, Muhammed Ali was in limbo between being an incredibly appealing boxer and a somewhat controversial racial figure,” Naison said. There was no doubt that Muhammed Ali was the greatest of his time. Muhammed Ali demonstrated courage, perseverance and pride throughout his entire life span. During the 1950s-60s there’s not one fight that he lost. He was confident and cocky all at once. However, Muhammad Ali was an important figure for many people. He was a role model for the black community, the Islam faith, and all the other people who resisted the Vietnam War. This became an issue because many people just wanted him to “shut up and box” , but he didn’t he continued to use his loud words and voice to speak for what he believed in. -“I ain’t got no quarrel with them Viet Cong” Ali stood for the proposition where unless you have a very good reason for killing people, war is wrong. Ali also stood for his freedom of choice. He believed that any black man was allowed to make the choice for the sake of his own life. He was fighting for rights that many black people didn’t even know existed at that time. -Ali was stripped of his title in April 1967 and it would be 7½ years before he regained it. The Rumble in the Jungle, on October 30, 1974, is remembered for Ali’s sensational eighth-round knockout of George Foreman and his rope-a-dope strategy. This was Ali’s significant comeback into the rink. Many people thought after this victory he would retire, but Ali was a fighter and continued to persevere and show everyone that he was the greatest of all time. -“While we were in Manila, there was this terrible outbreak of conjunctivitis and Ali was due to go (on a) walkabout one day,” he said. “Ferdie Pacheco, Ali’s doctor, warned him not to go anywhere near children who could be infected because that disease is very contagious and if Ali caught it, the fight would have been off. Of course Ali gets to Quezon City, gets out of the limo and the first thing he did was kiss a child.” This quotation goes to show that despite the cockiness and harsh words Ali has said, he is still a loving and kind man. - Ali negotiated 15 American hostages from Saddam Hussein on November 1990, six weeks before the United States began dropping bombs on January 17, 1991.
