India's manufacturing growth can help ease inflation

The last few years have witnessed a steep rise in the worldwide consumption of polymers. Also, there have been a lot of debates on the importation of Polymers from other countries, albeit, the subject in discussion here is how we, as a nation, catalyze this growth and spread our footsteps worldwide. Before we move ahead, it's worth noting that we have seen a dip in plastics exports during the previous quarter, a shrinkage of 4.2 percent to USD 3.27 billion. In fact, there is meager growth of plastic exporters from USD 16.5 million in 1955-56 to as much as USD 13.4 billion in 2021-22. Now, if we closely look at the indigenious manufacturing sector from the lens of growth, there's definitely a downpour of opportunities within several areas viz, petrochemicals, medical, aviation, aerospace, marine and packaging, etc. Leading conglomerates are now drifting towards the substitution of metal components -'Reinforced plastic' as a substitute, which has become increasingly popular, owing to its versatility and durability. Besides, technology being the powerful gear, several manufacturers are also finding ways to upgrade and optimize their products, eventually aiming for the global market share. Right now, we are only meeting the half of the demand that we receive. Also, we being one of the growing consumer market, this demand is only going to increase for plastics. That's our cue and that's where indigenious manufacturing fit in to dwindle this existing supply and demand gap. Polymers manufacturing contributes about 18% to the Indian economy, while also providing livelihood to more than 4 million people. Owing to this, the government has given emphasis on strengthening the industry for its several processing units, of which, majority are SMEs. Programs such as Make in India, Skill India, Digital India, and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan are fostering the nation's accelerated growth in the plastics industry. To succeed as a nation globally, the Indian plastic industry needs support from the government to up its trade in the market. With that being said, India with its sheer size population and tremendous growing potential is soon to become the world's next plastic destination.

"India has emerged as one amongst the global leaders in the past few years.

Rightfully so, it has now jumped to 40th position in the Global Innovation Index 2022 too, all thanks to several developments and improvements which it has gone through in multiple parameters, a report by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) said.

This six-notch jump from its 46th rank in 2021 has made it overtake Vietnam, bagging the title of top most innovative lower middle-income economy in the world.

On the threshold of the top 10 world's most-innovative economies, there are several names on the list, including Switzerland, the United States, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands with China.

India has a companion on the 40th position, Trkiye, both of them showing consistently strong performance to have reached this position for the first time. Other fellow countries include Canada, coming back among the top 15 global innovators (15th)

The report also writes, ""India's innovation performance is above average for the upper middle-income group in almost every innovation pillar, with the exception of infrastructure, where it scores below average."" Being the 3rd largest start-up ecosystem and a land to over a 100 unicorns, India is fulfilling close to 1.3 billion dreams.

This index is computed based on several multi-dimensional parameters, namely 'institutions', 'human capital and research', 'infrastructure', 'market sophistication', 'business sophistication', 'knowledge and technology outputs' and 'create outputs'. Also, on our journey towards becoming Digital India in 2015, the world shall see us embarking on the goal of a trillion-dollar digital economy in the for the coming years.
