Entry 8 - Your overall reflections on the internship and your studies.
Looking back where initially I indicated that I’d preferred to have completed my internship in an administrative role with Basketball Victoria is hard to believe. Whilst that position was still intriguing to me the SEN role fit like a glove with my passion for editing and using software programs such as Adobe Premiere Pro.
The SEN Video Editing Internship provided the sense of inclusiveness and importance to the role I obtained, creating motivation to strive for the best work I could be capable of. I believe that this was a reason for a significant jump in my abilities alongside a great support case that went beyond my supervisor.
Tumblr media
(Where the entire 228 internship hours were completed, MCO)
The 228 hours were a long uphill battle and may have put me in a financial position that will be tough to climb out of for a while, but a lot was gained thanks to those extra hours put in when comparing to other internships from other courses that would cease 100 hours before.
Narayanan et al. (2010) determines the influence of internships for students include ‘skill development and career enhancement’. I believe my skillset has transcended
It was slightly disappointing that I wasn’t offered a paid position especially when co-workers continuously strived to make a case for me to be, nevertheless these things happen and not everything can go my way, it was just an unfortunate case of the SEN Digital Team not having enough financial resources for a third Video Editor. However, I can definitely say that I am proud of myself for working as hard as I did for the entire duration of my internship with SEN.
In terms of my studies, I am extremely appreciative of all the time and effort all the lecturers have put in to assist, teach and guide me for the past three years. It has been a whirlwind of a three years which has surprisingly gone fast. Given that it has a lot to do with half of the course being stuck behind a screen and yet I have still been able to get so much out of it.
I have come to realise where my strengths and weaknesses lie particularly due to certain assignments. Written essay work is where I can improve upon and the more practical assignments whether in a group or alone is where I believe I’ve shone. My confidence has grown in leaps and bounds and that can on account of the amazing classroom environment that I have felt I can be vulnerable around and put myself out there.
I believe I have made the most out of what I could of the Bachelor of Sports Media course through both my studies and things that fall outside of the regular curricular activities. There is a great cohort of people that my time with them will exceed just the three years at Holmesglen.

Entry 7 - Reflection on your supervisor evaluations and how these align with your future career professional development requirements (these will be available at different times for individual students)
The evaluations from Nic who also offered great assistance in times of need, were very kind to say the least. A reflection of that nature was extremely flattering almost to a point where I struggle to accept it as an actual overall mark.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(The evaluation Nic Negrepontis provided me with)
The critical points in the evaluation raised in the evaluation have graciously been taken into consideration to determine my next steps to improve myself and my job performance.
Hyland & Hyland (2001) propose that feedback is more effective if it includes both positive and negative comments. Personally, I am thankful for Nic to coincide his evaluation with this feedback as it reduces the risk of my ego getting so big that it eventually comes back to bite me.
In regard to spelling errors, this is a simple fix. I am aware of my determination in fitting in as much work as possible into each shift can lead to slight mishaps through these tendencies to rush by pushing myself too much. The solution is to simply slow down or if this pace must be met in order to complete the task on time a better devised plan should be drawn up beforehand as a point of reference.
The second point to improve upon is my involvement in conversation amongst co-workers. I believe there are a few reasons why this came about. Firstly, I definitely take time to adjust to new people before feeling comfortable around them and having the confidence to speak my mind and show my true self. An intimidating transition into a workplace that I am well aware of and have such high distinction for further heightens the lack of openness I initiate new people and surroundings with.
However, in a bid to defend myself and my conversational skills, it is extremely hard to join let alone maintain a conversation whilst your task is to listen for a specific part of another conversation from one of SEN’s radio shows in headphones. I know there are some very talented people who can keep up with a multitude of conversations all at once, but I can safely say that I am not one of them.
https://twitter.com/i/status/1484788506325299205
(Former Jockey and Racing Pundit David ‘Taggs’ Taggart can get pretty loud when he tips a winner, Josh Jenkins)
Another reason for a lack of communication was my scheduled shifts. I personally found greater connections and more personable conversations with those I spent on the weekend shifts with. The weekend shifts had less demand and a much quieter office space leaving greater opportunities for casual conversation and chances to getting to know others.
Nevertheless, in any job field let alone the media one it is essential for a great networking basis both inside the office and outside too. My openness to new people and co-workers is certainly in need of improvement in some areas.

Entry 6 - Career aspirations including goal setting (you will arrange an interview with the Holmesglen Skills & Jobs Centre to review your CV, interview skills and preparedness for applying for work post-studies).
Career aspirations have always been very simple for me. I don’t aspire to great financial success or great prosperity and fame in my field of choice. Given those things would be nice and welcomed if they do naturally occur, however, I am a firm believer that I will achieve all my goals in my working life where I find a role that I am truly happy to attend and perform to the best of my capabilities. I’m certainly not a person who lives for the weekends, that’s just too much of a waste for the other five days of the week.
What does need to be said is whilst that is my end goal the path to that goal is yet to be revealed. My internship and role I performed with SEN was something I was interested and motivated to accomplish, yet I could think of many other jobs that would create that same motivation and interest. Funnily enough Beier et al. (2019) states that it has been “found that engaging in apprenticeships had significant benefits for student performance and career aspirations.”
To fix up my CV and cover letter emailed the Holmesglen Skills & Job Centre. After the third attempt I was able to finally reach the right person to talk to for the interview. An interview was set up with employment officer Ella Pace who over a Zoom Meeting was able to edit and suggest ways to integrate my SEN internship into my CV, keep the content all within two pages, whilst still making it stand out in a crowd of resumes. On top of this Ella was great at sharing ideas and focused on key points to raise about my own capabilities when writing cover letters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Employment Officer Ella Pace assisted me with edited suggestions in order to fit in my experience with SEN and keep my CV within two pages)
Tumblr media
(Employment Officer Ella Pace notified what else I needed to include with my Cover Letter)
In terms of preparedness for entering the workforce in a post-studies lifestyle, I am unsure about what the next step is. I was told I was unfortunate to not be given a position at SEN after my internship by fellow co-workers simply due to the fact that they could not afford to. Now it feels like this next step is all a bit unknown to me. Linkedin seems to be the next resort for job hunting as I’ve looked to apply for job positions that have been posted on the platform.
Otherwise, I am currently still working at the casual job that I’ve had for the past six years being the Fountain Gate Target retail store. It almost seems to feel like I am currently stuck in a rut or waiting on the bench ready to be subbed on. I have even considered progressing my studies through the Swinburne pathway to obtain a Master in Media and Communications if job offers don’t fall my way. This is really strange to be thinking about considering a classroom has never really been my forte.
Through all of this circling around my head I am still glad that I have seemingly got plenty of opportunities to strive after whether that be studying or working.

Entry 5 - Achievements and milestones (both technically and professionally, during the internship and personally).
Whilst there were no trophy presentations or official forms recognising my milestones and achievements throughout my internship with SEN, there were often little goals and personal bests I would set myself to achieve every shift.
Mintzberg et al. (2005) states that ‘goal setting involves the development of an action plan designed to motivate and guide a person or group’ This plan of action is what I adopted and created great success especially when motivation would linger, and I wanted to remain productive.
For instance, a simple one would be the number of videos/clips I could successfully edit and upload. I would tally this in all different ways whether it be clips completed in an hour, a shift, or even on an average basis (I.e., every 15 minutes).
In the first couple of weeks of my internship the goal would start simply with four clips completed in an hour. Of course, other tasks and things would get in the way, and I wouldn’t hold myself against that, but to start the milestone was four clips to ensure that there’d be no slacking off and that my role would be covered.
As time went on and my confidence and understanding of the position grew so did my little goals. With the quickest editing clips that didn’t lag or make me wait for too long I was determined to reach six to seven clips completed per hour. This was a great help when I was able to complete this goal as for shows such as SEN Breakfast, Whateley and Andy & Gazey that needed their footage to be posted onto various social media platforms straight away.
https://twitter.com/i/status/1607670248127320069
(This clip is two minutes long. With how fast the loading and exporting times were for Melbourne based shows that’s how long it would take to complete the clipping of the video, Andy & Gazey)
In terms of full shifts that I would stick around for eight hours for, I deem a successful day to be one where I completed and uploaded over 30 clips for social media viewing.
At the end of my time with SEN my personal bests were as follows.
Most Clips completed in an hour: 10
Most Clips completed in a day: 45
Fastest Clip that was completed: 50 seconds (including export time)
On a personal level, a milestone that was repeatedly reached was where I was able to fully understand how to edit a new show that needed new graphics shown on the page, thus independently creating the content and not hassling any co-workers and taking them away from their own work.
My co-worker very graciously reminded me of my speed, hard work and determination to produce content much to which I was very grateful but also didn’t know how to accept because I am awkward when it comes to getting complimented.
With all these little goals and compliments wrapped together, it added to the motivation that I already progressed to keep striving and beat my past performances.

Entry 4 -  Challenges you faced (the nature of the work, working hours, organisation, motivation, tabling of ideas).
The biggest challenge I faced by the length of the Flemington straight was the unreliability of the Adobe Premiere Pro Software due to the slow and crowded servers at SEN. Specific clips such as ones recorded in the Melbourne studios would be quick to edit and upload as export times would only take a minute or two and footage would be clear to skim through to cut the correct timecodes. However, for the likes of clips to be produced from the Adelaide, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane studios not only would export times have me twiddling my thumbs for up to 10 minutes, but also footage that needed to be watched through wouldn’t be able to load properly.
This meant that I would attempt to go back and reload a part of the video that was skipped past and not played in order to try an understand what part of the clip I was up to. This process, especially from the Sydney and Adelaide studios would have to repeat every ten seconds of the clip at hand.
https://twitter.com/i/status/1595975570256547841
(Kymbo & The Rooch were one of SEN SA shows that would take forever to load and export, SEN SA 1629)
I wouldn’t have to face this as much on Saturday shifts. ECN (2017) determines that in the internet ‘rush hour’ “data speeds drop by up to 30%”. Therefore, I believe that due to the more frequent foot traffic in the office throughout the week this was the reason behind the painstakingly slow exporting and loading times.
Another challenge I faced was the commute to the office. Being from Berwick, traditionally a trip to the city would take approximately an hour or so whether it be via car or train. Throughout the duration of the internship there were several Pakenham line closures that Berwick Station is on meaning it wasn’t a reliable service. On top of that the station that is only two kilometres from my house, was upgrading its car park for a 2023 expansion. This meant that in the meantime half of the car park was unavailable for use, thus scratching the option to go into SEN via Berwick Train Station. Driving in the full way was also not an option with parking on weekdays not only limited to a couple of hours but it also had to be paid for. This meant for all weekday shifts I was given that I would have to create a hybrid use of multiple forms of transportation to get to work.
It would go as follows. Drive from my house in Berwick to either Holmesglen Station or Huntingdale Station depending on track works or the congestion on the Monash Freeway. Next, take the train in from either station to Flinders Street. If I was going in from Huntingdale Station, I would have to get off at Richmond and change trains to skip wasted time through the city loop for an alternative train that goes directly to Flinders Street. From there it was a tram ride either down St Kilda Road to the Shine of Remembrance stop to then walk down the duration of Coventry Street, or if I was lucky a rare South Melbourne tram would appear and take me to the Kings Way stop dropping me off right outside SEN’s doors.
Tumblr media
(Roadworks on the Monash Freeway lasted half the time I was with SEN. The other half was just as congested, The Age)
All up a trip to my internship on average would take 1 hour and 50 minutes each way. This meant early trips meant earlier alarms and long shifts meant late night arrivals back home. Despite this I can proudly say that I was never late to a shift.
In recollection of these challenges, I’m glad that the challenges I faced were those not in my control and didn’t reflect on my overall ability and performance.

Entry 3 - Becoming an effective team member and contributor: how did utilise the support of your supervisor/co-workers to help build your confidence and become more efficient as an intern (this may include feedback, training or other support/opportunities).
Becoming an effective contributor to the Digital Team at SEN was easier than usual due to the natural motivation I possess in not wanting to let anyone down. Therefore, my determination in making sure I was performing my role to a suitable standard fortunately guided myself to be noticed as an effective contributor.
However, not all the credit should come back my way, I had quite the support network around to lean on and ask questions. This allowed me to position my hard work in the right direction and become the effective contributor the SEN digital team were after.
Further effectiveness came through the trust of my co-workers when providing me with more independence in my work. This was initially built upon my weekly Saturday shift where a limited amount of foot traffic in the office meant a larger role for myself if necessary. Jack Makeham another Video Editor that outranked myself, gifted me the duties of Editing all the necessary clips from the Saturday shows that needed to be uploaded for the vast SEN social media accounts and platforms, in the meantime he worked upon written articles for the company’s website.
Knowledge of this broke out amongst the weekday team which presented me the opportunity to be the guy to go to for videos for social media in the Melbourne office on weekdays too.
Through searching to become more of an effective team member I was able to create different types of video content that I wouldn’t have been granted access to otherwise. A lot of this came down to the healthy back and forth communication I would be able to have with everyone in the Digital Team.
Specifically, the questions that were answered often related to where things were located in the extensive database the SEN servers had. There were folders upon folders which included entire broadcast footage from all the different SEN studios in Australia & New Zealand, Audio Captures from studios that footage wasn’t working properly, an extremely wide range of graphics that informed viewers of promotional products, shows and further information, as well as extensive videos and statistics for both the social media and marketing team.
https://twitter.com/i/status/1588671048941441025
(A video I clipped on SENZ’s The Good Oil. One of four racing shows SEN broadcasts in New Zealand every Saturday alone, The Good Oil)
Routhieaux et al. (1999) describes where effective contribution solidifies teamwork stating, “findings suggest that the most effective teams share the workload...All too often individuals assigned to teams receive little or no indication of the time commitment required.”
When analysing the SEN Digital Team, the team-based goal is to maintain a constant flow of social media content across all SEN’s accounts. The increased involvement in this process created greater personal understanding in seeing the comparisons SEN has with these set of suggestions Routhieaux and Higgins provide.
Another circumstance that was out of my control that made me become a more effective contributor was fellow classmate Troy Hanning’s decision to move downstairs and complete his internship with Rainmaker. This doubled the amount of work I was originally given and provided me with further opportunity to show off my skillset.
The SEN team showed their comradery with their own rendition of Mike Brady’s ‘One Day in September’. It was a song that was constantly sung and parodied amongst co-workers.

Entry 2 - Finding your feet in the internship: induction, and completing initial tasks (i.e. the first 40 hours discussion)
My feet took a while to be truly found at SEN as odd shift times that was aided with a lack of available personnel, as well as the initially thought to be two Video Editor Intern system. Originally, I was one of two interns to fulfil the Video Editing Intern position at SEN co-operating with fellow classmate Troy Hanning, however, a busted jaw meant that he was on the sidelines, and I was left to two five hour 10am-3pm weekend shifts that took away my Saturdays and Sundays for the first couple of weeks. This meant that besides my initial training induction I had not interacted with many of the Digital Content Creating team at SEN as they only worked weekdays.
When things seemingly got back to normal, and I had one shift on a weekday and the other on the Saturday as planned, my co-Video Editing Intern requested a change to the Rainmaker studios downstairs. This shook things up and opened opportunities for myself and my 228 hours' worth of work to be chipped at more frequently.
This became a blessing in disguise as not only was the demand for my role and involvement increased, but my experience and understanding of the Digitals Content Creating team at SEN grew exponentially.
My confidence in Premiere Pro was constant and whilst mistakes weren’t frequent from the start, I was able to maintain a productive procedure to minimize and slip ups.
Tumblr media
(From the Sydney Studios SEN Breakfast with Vossy & Brandy was the first video I clipped, SEN Breakfast with Vossy & Brandy)
A big help in all of this was the team that offered their full support in guiding me through their particular system and preferences to deliver their media. My supervisor Dylan Galley was in my corner to set me up through the inductive training process and from there onwards answer any questions I had.
When he wasn’t there, for instance, the weekends, fellow Video Editor Jack Makeham was my guide to clear up any confusion in the editing process.
This helpfulness was extremely significant in setting up my knowledge and confidence to deliver the tasks I’m required to complete.
There was an odd task that I was required to perform early in my tenure with SEN. Third parties reached out to the Digital Team and were paying top dollar to clip a video where it showed the specific times in either an AFL or NRL game that an ad would appear on the grounds LED boards.
This would be very time-consuming and often given to me when there was nothing else to be done. A simple like it should’ve taken minutes but incorrect timecodes meant that a full AFL/NRL game had to be scanned through to find the specific ad.
Tumblr media
(The LED boards that I had to focus on throughout replays of games and take the recording from when they appear to disappear, MKTG SPECS)
As my internship hours rose and my role was expanded, this task of LED clipping soon faded away. Something that I did not mind at all.
Nevetheless, this first part of my internship was integral not only from a work point of view that provided me with the time to hone my craft, it also has been important as it allowed me to “build relationships with companies and the surrounding community.” (Lantu et al. 2022).

Entry 1 - Your preparedness prior to commencing your internship and how you assimilated into the organisation’s culture.
“Experiencing the unknown due to a perceived lack of information leads to uncertainty, which undermines an individual’s ability to prepare effectively and efficiently for the future” (Kim et al. 2022) When I was fortunate enough to be selected for the Video Intern position at SEN I was lucky to have several prior experiences that enhanced my preparation. For instance, the task at hand was to be fully aided with the Adobe software program of Premiere Pro, an application that I had been using for well over 5 years. To add to this preparation my most recent usage of Premiere Pro was editing a TV show length program for Davin’s Video Journalism class. This meant I was well aware and up to date of the vast usage of features the program has to offer and therefore, was ready for a range of styles of editing if needed at SEN.
To add to the preparedness was my internship that I previously did with Cricket Victoria earlier this year. Coming in for the second half of the Premier Season, the role shared similarities with my position at SEN particularly with the usage of the suite of Adobe software. This role that required producing media for the league in Photoshop and Premiere Pro in a professional setting created further understanding for what would come to be very helpful at the commencement of my tenure at SEN.
Tumblr media
(The CitiPower Centre (Formerly the Junction Oval) is the home to Cricket Victoria where I completed my first internship in early 2022, Uplift Events)
Living in Berwick is always tough to make the journey into the city on a quiet day let alone on a working one. The Monash Freeway is bumper to bumper and the Pakenham Line trains are often unreliable. Luckily my time previously at Cricket Victoria aided this understanding as its location was just down the road from SEN. A specific task I had to perform during my tenure at Cricket Victoria had me come to the location of SEN to watch their weekly TV show Premiere Cricket TV in the Rainmaker studios.
The blatantly obvious preparation that will naturally guide me in the Sports Entertainment Network is my passion and knowledge for sport. Its particular content revolves around topics and events that I have immersed myself in all my life. It covers a wide range of sport that I am heavily invested in and delivers a product that I would consume.
Essendon domination: The best of the Bombers' 20-game winning streak | 2000 | AFL
(I am a passionate fan of the Essendon Football club. The SEN’s main sport that accumulates an audience is AFL. AFL)
With all of this prior preparation backing in my corner there was still a great level of uncertainty. A job description and a zoom call interview can only say so much in what’s to come. I certainly wasn’t prepared fully and shouldn’t be as I will only be truly prepared once experiencing the role I have to perform.
To assimilate myself into the organisations culture all that I did was listen, ask questions and try as much as I could to take everything in as quickly as possible. My supervisor Dylan showed me the ropes, other co-workers came to aid in anytime I required and the work I performed created the best sense of an understanding with the organisations culture. This grew exponentially when my supervisor and fellow co-workers were confident enough of my skillset to allow me the independence of creating all the daily clips whenever I came in for a shift.
