Virtual Sketchbook 3
The painting Between Two Worlds, created by Radcliffe Bailey in 2003. The painting is 24 inches by 36 inches (60.96 centimeters by 91.44 centimeters) and was created by using the Chine Collé method, the inclusion of velvet, and working with photocopies. This painting is currently on display at the Sarasota Art Museum.
In this artwork, there are several main colors that help make it stand out. Colors such as green, red, and black represent the African American culture. These colors are incorporated into the shapes and are layered on top of each other. These shapes, such as triangles, squares, rectangles, and other geometric elements, make up the boat and its flags. The use of sketched lines and brushstrokes added detail to the background of the painting. The final aspects in creating the painting are the addition of pieces of velvet and a vintage black and white photograph, which serves as the focal point.
When studying the painting, the rhythm of the painting and the proportions can create a feeling of chaos, but Bailey’s layering of these elements adds a busyness without distracting from telling a story. The white lines included act as baselines and help the big components, such as the flags, boat, and photograph, stand out. Furthermore, the addition of the photograph, along with the aforementioned elements, outlines the woman’s background and emphasizes the subject of rising above adversity. In a sense, it shows that she is still standing.
This painting includes both unity and variety. Unity is demonstrated through using a similar color scheme that works together. In contrast, though, the blue color gives a calming feel to the busyness of the black sketch marks, and the velvet square in the upper right of the painting adds a softness next to the bold, black, and green. As mentioned, Bailey includes a variety of elements in this work, with the vintage photograph being the standout. It also helps to give a balance to the work.
When I first observed this artwork, what struck me first was the photograph of the woman. Not only was it interesting to see a photograph embedded into a painting, but the photograph itself looked like it told a story. I was curious as to why Radcliffe Bailey would include a photograph in the center of a hand-painted piece of art. After carefully examining this painting, I began to see all of the elements of the painting work together to tell a story. By the woman at the forefront, I could see why he gave it the title “Between Two Worlds.”
In doing basic research and learning about Radcliffe Bailey, he is of African American descent and was known to create sculptures and art based on the African American culture. He lived from November 25, 1968, to November 14, 2023, and was known as a contemporary visual artist. His art was inspired by the Civil Rights Movement in the city of Atlanta. Many African American contemporary artists can look back to the 1930s Harlem Renaissance as a foundation for telling their stories through art. In the article New Art For A New Self-Awareness, Valerie J. Mercer says, “The ideas advanced by Locke for African American art have endured, evident by the work of many contemporary artists who choose to portray images of their people and reference aspects of African American history, experience, and culture, while demonstrating their interest in current stylistic trends and new media.” Bailey was clearly able to get the dark subject of slave history across to society and the world by the use and placement of different elements in the painting, like the photograph of the woman. If he had just painted a picture of the woman instead of using a photograph, it may not have stood out as much to those observing it. The darkness of the boats and unsettling background reaffirm the artist’s ability to show the injustices that were done to African Americans. To conclude, the Between Two Worlds artwork portrays Bailey’s ability to honor the subject of African American history, to catch the attention of the observer, and to show that the woman is able to rise above adversity.

4. Artist's Choice
5. Good Design Layout:
This image depicts a layout for a background. The artist took elements such as a table, some tools, and shelves to make it look like a workshop. A good layout message involves taking elements and organizing them either online or in a sketchbook to create a form that appeals to the observer. Observers would easily be able to tell what this photograph is trying to convey.
Bad Design Layout:
The photograph shown here is a bad design layout because the message is difficult to understand. A bad design layout in art discusses an organization that does not appeal to the observers, and it does not succeed in helping the viewers understand the message.
What makes a good design is a lot of thought and analysis put into the artwork to help make it stand out. A good design also helps show off the identity of the artist. The intent for the layout is to help convey the message the artwork is trying to convey. It fulfills its purpose by catching the attention of those looking over the layout and appealing to them.

My name is Jacob Hartman. I’m currently a student at SCF. Next year, after I receive my Associate of Arts degree at SCF, I plan to transfer to USF and pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management. I currently work in the Publix Bakery because I love to bake, and I see it as a career for me.
Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch Painter who was born in the Southern Netherlands region and was the oldest son of a pastor.
At a young age, Vincent mostly kept to himself and spent most of his time out in nature exploring the environment around him.
Vincent’s uncle worked under the Hague. Vincent himself took the position at the age of 16.
Vincent taught English in London and was employed under a bookseller in the Netherlands in 1877.
In Belgium, Vincent went through his first spiritual problem, which was that he had given away all of his items, which led to his dismissal by the Church.
From the first time I looked at Vincent Van Gogh’s art, the way I thought about it changed because before, I did not know his background and how his art came to be. Now that I know about Vincent and what he went through, it has changed how I view his artwork. By looking at his paintings, I can see how his work symbolizes his attributes, such as his love for nature. What I was able to see in the art now was Vincent Van Gogh’s personality and his love for creating incredible pieces of artwork.
A piece of art that I hold in my house that I look at every day is the LEGO version of Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night picture. This painting was created by Vincent Van Gogh in 1889. In order to do so, he used a canvas and applied oil paint. Vincent made this while he had his mental illness. He made it to represent his bedroom window view. I think it is beautiful because there is a lot of detail put into the painting, which helps make it stand out.
When I look at art, I’d bring along a camera as well as a notebook. These are ways in which I can gain inspiration and understand which techniques to use to help make my artwork stand out. My name is Jacob Hartman. I’m twenty-one years old and I’m a male. I’m from Sarasota, Florida. What I do for fun is I like to bake as well as build Legos. I work at Publix, and I volunteer at Sarasota County Parks and Recreation.
In my daily life, I’m inspired by the methods that artists use to help make their artwork stand out. He fact that they add lots of detail to their paintings makes people wonder what they did to create such a masterpiece.
