Throughout this school year I feel that i have made a huge difference in my papers I have written. I have been able to better understand the correct format to write in as well as helpful ways to brainstorm when writing my paper.putting them all together took some work to make it flow as a paper but i feel that i have been able to do a pretty good job. Overall this semester this class has been great and helpful. I have been able to go out and meet many people and see peoples perspectives on a certain subject from all over the world on tumblr. I am glad I took this class as it has really helped to open my eyes on some things such as what some may consider literacy. I believe this will help me in many ways as I continue through my college career as well as in life.

Progress Blog 9

After compiling all of my research I am very proud of what I was able to show to the many people that didn’t believe that baseball has anything to do with literacy. I believe in the paper I have composed there is plenty of proof about how literacy is used many times throughout every game. I am glad I was able to experience the different sides of people who surround the Texas Rangers organization. This has been fun to be able see the positions of each person about the Rangers as I had grown up watching this team from the highs and lows. This team will always have a spot in my heart as they are the reason I got into playing the great game of baseball in the first place. The game of baseball has shaped me into a person that I am glad to be and I couldn’t be more glad that I have been able to play this game for many years.

Progress Blog 8

I have been able to see many different opinions of the community I have chosen to study. Doing my research I have found that many either love or dislike the Texas Rangers, there aren’t very many people that feel in-between about them. I have found many posts talking about how great they are and the many achievements players on the team have achieved. I have also found many people that talk bad about them saying that they always choke in the world series and that the only reason they made it was because of the other teams that year weren’t as good as usual. I think that if you were to research almost any team or community these days you will find negative comments about them which is kind of sad that some can’t just appreciate what others do and work at their entire lives to become great at it.

Progress blog 7

After conducting research with the community of the MLB team Texas Rangers I have found that many people still love to watch this team to this day. Many continue to attend games and all sorts of different things even as their favorite team isn’t doing as well as they would hope. It has been a blast getting to research more about a team that I grew up watching and going to games at their stadium. I am glad to see that there are many others out there that still go to the games and watch them play just because they love the game. I have been able to find many posts about special days in the Rangers organization which really brings back memories for me as I was able to watch some of these great feats happen either in person or on television cheering one of my favorite teams on.

Josh Hamilton becomes the 16th major leaguer to hit four home runs in one game when he blasts an 0-2 pitch over the Camden Yards centerfield fence in the eighth inning of the Rangers’ 10-3 victory over Baltimore. The Texas outfielder, who connected each time with a man on base, also hits a double to set the American League’s single-game record for total bases with 18, one shy of Shawn Green’s major league mark of 19 established in 2002 with the Dodgers.

Progress blog 6

I have started my writing assignment four and I am enjoying seeing the different perspectives from people all over Tumblr. Many people are supportive of the Texas Rangers but there are also people who aren’t big fans of this team. Many posts over the Rangers are sort of old as in when Adrian Beltre retired and joined the 3000 hit club. These happened before the current season started and I would like to be able to see some more current content added so that I am able to talk about this too. Being a fan of the Rangers for pretty much my entire lifetime has helped me to understand as well as know many of the older players that are posted about such as Josh Hamilton, Derrick Holland, and Nolan Ryan. These are common people posted about and I can see why because they have made a huge difference to the Rangers organization.

Jakob Hendricks Progress Blog 5

Getting to go out and do some research is very exciting to me. I have chosen to do my research over the baseball fandom. I chose this because throughout my entire life I have played baseball and I believe it has helped to shape me into the person I am today. I am ready to hear about the many experiences of players and coaches that I have been lucky enough to meet throughout my career as well as people all over the world that love the game of baseball but also look at it as a way to freedom and a way of life. Many people in poor countries look to baseball to give them a career as well as a new life coming to America and playing in college as well as the major leagues. Hopefully I am able to talk to many people and have many different prospectives of one of my personal favorite things.

Jakob Hendricks Progress Blog 4

In the beginning I was very hesitant about doing a group project as many times I have been left to do much of the work required alone and my partners take credit for it. This project in the beginning was starting to look the same as I was having trouble getting in contact with my group members. Finally I was able to get a hold of the group and we created a group chat where we were able to evenly divide up the workload. I am glad that the due date was pushed back because if not then we probably wouldn’t have done as well as we did as I was the only on that done their part by the original deadline. Eventually we were able to come together as a group and successfully get the project done but my group seemed to be procrastinators which had made me a little nervous as to what would happen when the project was due.

After reading our assigned readings I find it very important important to be ethical when writing about another community. It is important to always consider the safety and comfortableness of the people that are a part of your research. Being kind and talking with them to let them know exactly what your are planning to do when researching other people. Some groups like the amish live without technology and prefer a simple way of life. Knowing this would be very important before you went to sit down with this group of people. You would first want to ask them if it would be ok to record them and have them sign a consent form so that they confirm that they are comfortable being recorded or talking to a recorder while you are with them doing your research. It is always most important to show whoever you are doing a study over that you will be trust worthy and won’t say anything harmful about or to them.

Jakob Hendricks Progress Blog 2

I began writing my first writing assignment a few days ago and didn’t know where to begin. Throughout the readings my perspective had been completely changed on how I defined literacy. So to get me started I just thought back at what my original thoughts of literacy were and began to write about the examples they talk about in the book and how these each helped me to form new ideas of what literacy really is. Seeing the different examples of how people can communicate and get to know each other without even really meeting face to face brought in a whole new idea to me as how I view literacy. I see literacy as any way someone communicates with another and even though it is now face to face and online message would still be one person giving information to another. Starting my paper from my original thoughts on literacy to my current thoughts and incorporating all of the readings throughout has really helped me get through this writing assignment.

After reading the assigned chapters I have an entire new view on what literacy really is. I began this with just having the idea that literacy only ties into writing on paper or being able to read. After spending lots of time reading these chapters and also checking out as much as I can learn from the internet I have learned that literacy doesn’t have to have anything to do with reading or writing. Literacy could be many things even just being able to understand each other  no matter what form of communication. With everything around the world evolving and developing as quickly as it is there are so many different ways for someone to connect with another person. Even me just knowing how to use this computer and social media website can show that I am literate in using computers and networks online. Literacy has a definition that is constantly changing along with the world around it.
