actual criticisms of academia:
cost of education acting as class barrier
exploitation of graduate workers
colonialist past and present
ties to military industrial complex
danger of power structure entrenching and justifying orthodox views on social issues
criticisms of academia that get made:
those damn ivory tower academics are wasting money learning about things

it really is so uncomfortable being a trans man in cis centric conversations of feminism. I just wonder. do they know about people like me? do they care? if I brought it up to them, how would they react? Do they expect me to be their human shield?

Israel has deployed auto-firing quadcopters that emit the sounds of crying babies.

There is no possible reality where this is in any way capable of being passed off as self-defense. It was never self-defense. It is, and always has been, a genocide.
Crying babies. Crying babies. This is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, meant to draw out and kill civilians while also making it far more difficult to locate and aid children who are trapped or alone.
If you have money to spare, please consider donating to some of the fundraisers on Operation Olive Branch to help people escape this genocide.
End the occupation. Free Palestine.

oh somehow the comments are worse, i don't know why i do this to myself.
i don't know why i do this to myself, i sat down to watch Cosmonaut Marcus's Aquaman video, less than 90 seconds in and he has already gotten a central character's name wrong and made a joke about it not knowing he's getting the name wrong. i mean, like i maintain that Marcus does not have good media literacy but just happens to come upon normal takes sometimes like a broken clock, but holy shit, i really hope this video is not as bad as his TASM video which is perhaps the video that pisses me off the most on the internet because of just how utterly wrong it gets those movies and just how many views it has and the damage it has done to people's perception of those movies.
anyway, Marcus, how long would it have taken to just look up the character's name on Wikipedia to make sure your joke actually is correct? my brother in Christ, how off-the-cuff do you do these movie "reviews", like you could at least double check something before putting it out for millions of people to watch.

finished the whole video, it sucks, 2/10, Marcus is a terrible critic and extremely bad at conveying why he feels something or why something is bad, it's the same kind of "criticism" people like Mauler do, who just gesture to something and expect the audience to automatically assume that something is bad because they intonate it like it's bad. at least Marcus keeps the videos mercifully short.
there's like maybe three bits about the movie in here that i feel like are actually legitimate thought-out criticism that's not just like a reaction Marcus is throwing out in the world as criticism, and potentially changing or at least influencing the minds of a million people at a minimum, even though the video now has millions of views. like genuinely it's astonishing how bad it is. i don't think it's as bad as his TASM video thankfully, but it's pretty fucking bad because he ALSO does not fundamentally understand this movie like he didn't get the TASM movies.
it's almost like Marcus believes there is an Objective Standard to Art that every movie should try to do and be (and the fact that he only praises Wan's direction and imagery in the third act as if it came out of nowhere should tell you all you need to know about his capabilities as a Critic, if i'm being honest, you don't even need to have an understanding of criticism to get that) and those kinds of people already piss me off, but he's just also fucking wrong about so much of the shit he says that it's almost comical.

there's so much more shit i could talk about and so many more things i could say but that would just be me repeating myself at this point. but the point Marcus is making about how he doesn't know about the crab people and that the movie only gives you a minimal exposition scene before the fighting starts is like perhaps the most obviously glaring example of Marcus just not watching the fucking movie. the movie literally multiple times tells you what they're doing and what they're fighting for, like it even visually introduces you to the crab people in the scene where Vulko is telling Arthur about the history of the Trident — which is where the movie does racism like that legitimate criticism that you could make at the movie but you just are making criticism that makes it seem like you didn't fucking watch the movie! Orm's entire goal in this movie is become Ocean Master and for that he needs the support of the crab people that he's fighting, so he's fighting them to get them on his side to make the yield and obey him so he can fight humans, like that's a significant beat in the movie. Marcus just didn't fucking watch this movie, i think. or at least he watched it like half asleep or half drunk or something, because he was not paying attention to the fucking dialogue, because this is like so beyond fundamentally wrong, it's like he's not even talking about the movie. he doesn't even understand the fundamental motivations of the fucking villain! what the fuck are you talking about, Marcus?????

"Aquaman is supposed to shown as the dumb superhero, the himbo superhero, if you prefer" just tapping a printed copy of my original post, Marcus is a fucking broken clock. i suppose at least he gets this is himbo cinema, but then the rest of his fucking criticism makes no fucking sense.

"it's kinda stupid, and it embraces that" the whole movie does, Marcus. the hero shot that starts off act 3 is a shot of Aquaman in him in his comic gold costume and green pants. jesus fucking christ, you're terrible at your job, Marcus.

10:26 into the video and there's so much more i could fucking talk about but we will be here all fucking day so i am just going to move on. but i will mention this. I keep seeing people using cliché as like automatic criticism and like? why? seriously, why?? why is it bad? can you like effectively convey that as a critic? something being "cliché" does not make it bad, "clichés" are cliché for a reason. the movie is extremely self aware of what it is, and is fundamentally using that to convey a narrative with familiar trappings lovingly, that understands what it is, what it needs to be, and what it wants to be.
it being cliché could make it less fundamentally interesting for you, or it could make the movie's twists predictable in a way that undermines their effectiveness, if that was a thing the movie wanted to do, or like literally whatever. what does the movie being cliché actually do for the movie? how are those clichés being used?
like, you know what other movie is extremely "cliché"? Sam Raimi's Spider-Man. are you going to say Spider-Man is a fucking bad movie because it's cliché? or do you like that movie and you don't like this one so this being cliché is bad but that being cliché is good? both these movies tell a familiar superhero narrative with a lot of style and enthusiasm and love behind and in front of the camera because they're trying to get you to connect with stuff and work on established patterns to convey an epic narrative to you in the structural form you're familiar with.
Marcus, you have to effectively communicate criticism, that's your fucking job as a person with authority and a substantial following online who talks about art. do better.

alright, the criticism about getting more from Orm is not bad, i suppose they could have thrown in a scene about somebody expressly dying of pollution or something, i guess? like it's not the worst criticism i've ever heard, at least it's sensible, and like there's a point to it. but then he immediately follows it by saying "we know almost nothing about king Orm" when the movie dedicates multiple scenes to expressly laying out how he feels about Aquaman, and how he grew up, and how he feels about his mother and that he mostly just wants power because he feels like he deserves the throne. because he hates Arthur. like they explicitly talk about it before they fight in the Ring of Fire? did you watch the movie before making this video, Marcus? or are you like working off of a vague recollection of the movie and writing the script and then just adding shit in post if it needs to be fixed (which you clearly don't do bc you're getting so many basic things wrong)?
like the movie is not showing you all his stuff visually, sure, but you just have to like pay attention to the dialogue, buddy. because it's not his movie. his job is there too act as a obstacle for Aquaman, if it was his movie, we would see more of it, but he's not the center of it so you get the stuff you need from him in the dialogue because he's an antagonist, and not the protagonist.
i don't know why i do this to myself, i sat down to watch Cosmonaut Marcus's Aquaman video, less than 90 seconds in and he has already gotten a central character's name wrong and made a joke about it not knowing he's getting the name wrong. i mean, like i maintain that Marcus does not have good media literacy but just happens to come upon normal takes sometimes like a broken clock, but holy shit, i really hope this video is not as bad as his TASM video which is perhaps the video that pisses me off the most on the internet because of just how utterly wrong it gets those movies and just how many views it has and the damage it has done to people's perception of those movies.
